RAMAN, MH R.A.S- PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION The idea to write a book on the mode of casting and inter- preting 3 Progressed Horoscope first came to my mind in the year 1931 This was mamly due to the persuasion of my revered grand father late Professor B Suryanarain Rao Then 1 took up the study of the Tajaka system of Astrology a5 propounded by Kesava and Neelakanta and 4 was surprised ro find that the results (Annual) arrwed at according to this system were remark- ably true in many cases This naturally lead me to make further investigations end I was impelled to prepare an exposition based on the Tajaka system. which would enable one to read one’s annual results from the Progressed Herescope with sufficient accuracy The manuscript Was submitted for the approval of late Mr B Suryanerain Rao, and it was highly appreciated by tum | caleulated a number of Progressed Horoscopes and found that the indications were practically an conformity with the actual results obtained, only 17 such cases in which the Tajaka principles were scrupulously applied not only in the matter of aspects but with regard to the code of interpretation also In regard to the Varshadasas (annual directions) in many cases, the commencement of Dasas synchronised with the important epochs during the lives of the individuals _ One peculiar feature | was able to specially mark was that whenever the Pragressed Horoscope was interpreted wrthout a consideration of the Birth Horoscope the results went off the mark So 1 concluded that the interpretation of an Annual Horescope must have been intimately connected with the Birth 1 Horoscope and that if the one was divorced from the other, the conclusions were bound te prove erroneous — In my conversations on the subject with many pandits | heard some of them say that the Tajaka system of Astralogy could be applied only to charts of individuals who have passed the age of 30 | tested this view but was never convinced of its soundness | can assure my readers that late Mr B Suryanarain Raa had also been wnchned to the author's wew that the Tayaka system could be applied to charts of individuals of any age —‘[ would like very much to hear fram as many readers of this book as may be possible, about their own experience, after they have tested this methed of Annual Reading No apology 1% needed by the author for placing this exposition before the educated public in the English Language for the first time with suitable illustrations, as the value of the Astrological Publications cannot be underrated, especially in view of the fact that the present generation has begun to realise that Astrology is as much a science as for instance Zoology or Beteny 1s In the following pages an unvarnshed account of the principles of Tajaka system has been placed before the readers with the author's own humble observations — | crave the indulgence of my readers far any shortecomings in this work, and $ solicit their favour of making any suggestions they may think proper with a view to their being incorporated in a future edition Bangalore, \ B V, RAMAN, I=e2—1938 The Author, Varshaphal PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION have been the first in India to present the Tajska system of Astrology for the acceptance of the educated public. in an easy, charming and convincing style This book is mot an English translatien but is the product of my researches in the field of Tayaka Astrology The principles propounded are umque and they have been found to work accurately in actual prachce The dirst edition had a good response from the public The second edition herewith presented shows many an improvement A new chapter giving the summary of the book is added at the end of the work. Tables of Dwadasavargas have been included and the readet will be able to ascertain the strengths of planets without much labour | expect a better reception for the second edition trom my readers My treatment of the subject ef Astrology ina scientific and rational manner has aroused a keen interest in the minds of the readers for understanding the science properly The growing populanty of the Aatrologieal Magazine end the works of my grandfsther {late Prof B Surysnaracn Rao} and myself bears testimony to the large demand Astrelogical Publications have Suggestions for smproving the work are welcome | would speceally requett resders ta study the method propounded in the folfowing pages for themselves and judge how far the results are applicable in actual practice Bengelore, \ 8 Y RAMAN MRAS 131984, Authar = - : Che Astrological Magazine THE BEST EXPONENT OF INDIAN SCIENCES (FOUNDED 1893) By B. V. RAMAN, MRAS Editor, Astrological Magazine CHAPTER | INTRODUCTORY 1 HINDU ASTROLOGY —In Hindu Astrology thera are, broadly speaking three systems, viz, Parasory, Jaurom and Taka 2. PARASARI Almost all astrological books today are alfer Parssara «The generality of Astrologers adopt this method of predictions so that, for purposes of clarity and distinction, we shall defina the Parasara system as that expounded by such celeLroted writers at Varshamitira, Venkatess Kalyanavarmna and a host of others too numerous to be mentioned 3 JAIMINT Jain oon tha other hand, dffers from PROGRESSED HOROSCOPE 4° TAJAKA —Coming to the Tajaka on which the present exposition 1s based, it is found that ths system is of entwely later origin and growth = [t must be clearly undrstood that our conception of the term ‘later as different from that held by ortental scholars The Hindus were fully aware of this method of Progressed Horoscope many centuries before Christ But it seems to have been put in language which could be understood by more than the scholarss as far back as 500 B C 5 NILAKANTHA AND KESAVA —Out of many writers these are the two great authors who have made a definite departure from the canons of Parasam and written books on the Tajaka system 6 DIFFERENCES —The Tajaka system differs from the other two mentioned above in many respects It would be out of place to catalogue here all the existing differences excepting to quote afew As the reader goes through the book he will be able to understand these differences for himself It must be carefully remembered that in mterpreting the Annual Horoscope aconnection is recognised with the Birth Chart by an actual mathematical point of intersection known as the Mentha The New Year or anniversary is said to commence at the moment when the Sun comes back to the place where he was at the time of birth According fo Tajaka the Moon Mercury and Venus are feminine and the Sun Mars and Jupiter are masculine No eunuchs or hermaphradhtes are considered The female planets are powerful during mght while the male planets are strong during day Another peculiar feature of Tajaka is the con sideration of Harshasthana, Muntha, Hadda and Thrirasyadhe path: Inthe determination of Thrirasyadhipathits, in addition to their permanent or natural lordships the planets have Tatkalika 6 HOROSCOPE CASTING {temporary} lordships also The lord of the year in question plays an important part in an Annual Horoscope For deter rmning the lord what 4 called Danchatergecyabale (five source energy or strength)is taken into account Another kind of planetary strength 1s also considered wiz The Diadusa targe yabaia (Twelve source energy} In our next chapter we shall directly describe the method of crecting the Progressed Horoscope without making any apology for assuming a knowledge of the rudiments of Astrology and the ability to erect a Harascope {accarding to the Hindu system) which can be gathered fram any standard book on the subject (See A Manual of Hindu Astrology ) 7 STANDARD HOROSCOPE —In order to illustrate the principles of Tayska system we would consider the natwity oF a male born on 8th August 1912 A D appreciation of the results to be obtained in a particular yesr it ts necessary to erect a horoscope accord ng to approved Astronorneal rufes and then subject it to the cfosest scrut ny in the light Sun comes back to the same point that he occupied at the time of birth 9 DAY AND TIME OF PROGRESSED HOROSCOPE — Kesava gives the duration of the Solar year as 365 days, 15 ghaties, 1 wighaties and 30 paras This expressed in Enlish measure would be equal te 365 days, 6 hours 12 minutes and 36 seconds But, for the sake of canvenience, we are retaining the Indian Terminology 24 mininutes of western tima make oné Ghats, 60 Vighattes make one Ghat: and 60 Paras comprise one Vighat. or 24 seconds The time of commencement of the anniversary can easily be ascertained from the following table The year constant (Sisnavatsarc Dis ued) 1s obtained by dividing the duration of the year as given above by 7, reyecting the quotient 365d t3gh, 3tvi, 30 pera 7 casting aff the quotient, we get 1 day, 15 ghaties, 31 vighaties and 30 paras as the year constant This 1s the starting point for our future calculations [fa person, was born, for instance, on 8/8/1912 A D, at 33-30 ghaties after sunrise, then his second year would commence in 1913 August at the time and on the day obtained by adding one day, 15 ghaties, 31 vighaties and 30 paras to the (number of) week day and time of birth—The days of the week day are numbered thus —Sunday 1, Monday 2, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4, Thursday 5, Friday 6 and Saturday 7 ‘It 1s better to mark the time of birth in ghaties, etc, instead of in English hours to save confusion Multiply the number of hours passed from sunrisa (L MT} by 22 and the result will be the birth time inghates Thus in ovr example horoscope, the sunrise on the day of birth was at 5-51 AM.
