The death penalty in Colombia was abolished in 1910, the last execution took place in 1909,
currently according to Article 11 of the Political Constitution of Colombia of 1991 "The right to
life is inviolable. There will be no death penalty. "
What are the motivations for it to be approved? For the majority of Colombians, the diagnosis
with specific symptoms and signs is clear: insecurity, bombs, explosions, lack of credibility in
the State, in the government, lack of civil ethics or religious morals, disappearances,
kidnappings, elimination of beggars, of peasants, indigenous people, lawyers, police, etc.
There is no credible evidence that the death penalty prevents from committing crimes more
effectively than imprisonment. In fact, in countries where the death penalty has been banned,
figures on crime have not increased. In some cases, the reality is that they have diminished. In
Canada, the murder rate in 2008 was less than half that of 1976, when the death penalty was
abolished in the country.
- Executing a person because he has taken the life of another person is revenge, not justice.
- The death penalty violates the most fundamental right, the right to life. It is the most extreme
form of cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.
When the death penalty is applied, it is irreversible. The mistakes made can not be undone. An
innocent person can be released from prison for a crime he did not commit, but an execution
can never be reversed.
