PHONETICS

Phonetics- it is the science of speech- can be divided into auditory. acoustic and articulatory.

Acoustic is the ability of sound to travel in a particular space. Various factors have to be kept in

mind when it comes to acoustics.

Articulatory Phonetics deal with our ability to speak and the various factors associated with it.

Role of speech organs in the production of sound-:

1. Panini was the first person in the world to write about the articulation of sound. He was the

first to write about phonetics.

2. Alexander Melville Bell was an English Phonetic. George Bernard Shaw wrote about him.

According to Melville 26 alphabets of English language are useless.

Phoneme- Pronunciation

According to Melville even vowels and consonants are wasteful. according to him there are

actually 12 vowels, 8 dipthongs , 24 consonants. These 44 compile the IPA(International

Phonetic Alphabet).
