Answer all questions
PART – A (5 X 3 = 15 Marks)
1. Consider two vectors A and B with an angular displacement of between them. How do
you express the vector component of A along the direction of B
2. Consider a field vector F = 2ya x + 3xay + 4zaz. Determine whether the field is solenoidal
and irrotational.
3. Consider the centre of earth as origin. Write the location of geographic south pole in
Spherical and Cartesian systems respectively. The radius of earth is 6371Km.
4. The temperature in an area is expressed as T = x2 + y2 – z. A mosquito located at (1, 1, 2)
wishes to get to cold regions as soon as possible. Provide the mosquito with the unit vector
in that required direction.
5. Consider any force – space integral problem. You are provided just three points in the
problem space. Determine the procedure by which you decide that, the particular space
provided is a two dimensional surface or a three dimensional volume enclosed by a surface.

PART – B (3 X 5 = 15 Marks)
6. Prove Stoke’s theorem numerically. Assume force vector and surface suitably.

7. Consider normal Cartesian co-ordinate system. A boat with a mast of area 10m2 needs to
travel towards east. Mast is the cloth sail present in boats. The mast is present along North-
South direction. The force due to the wind could be expressed 20a x+20ay acting from the
north east direction. Determine the amount of wind encountered by the mast.

8. Consider a cube with side 1m. A force F = xax + yay + zaz is acting from the centre of cube.
Determine the net surface integral.

PART – C (2 X 10 = 20 Marks)
9. Vectors A = 7ar + 5a + 3a is situated at a point (r, , )= ( 3, 45 ,45 ). Express the vector in
Cartesian system and cylindrical system.

10. Communication Satellites of individual countries are maintained at fixed positions in the
geosynchronous orbit at a height of around 36000 km above earth surface, using thrusters
(Thrusters burn fuel in one direction to propel the satellite in the opposite direction).
Consider our INSAT placed at (r, , )= (36x106, 45 , 60 ), due to some factors it moves to
(r, , )= (36x105, 45 , 60 ). The location correction needs to be carried out along the
straight line joining these two points. The force vector due to the thrusters could be
expressed as F = 0.707 *(ax + ay + az) Newton. Determine the energy burned out by the fuel
as the position is corrected. If the burning capacity of 108J/Litre, find the total amount of
fuel used for correction.
