Create an Organism
For this project you will create organisms as well as the role that they will have
within the ecosystem.

Option A: You are an explorer and just stumbled upon an undiscovered region
of the World. Tell us about what you found!

Create the landmass where your ecosystem is located (ex. an island, a continent,
a mountain, etc.). The ecosystem can include any land or aquatic biome. You
have to include at least one biome, but the more the better. Describe each biome
you use. I am looking for physical descriptions of the biome, the climate, average
rainfall, temperatures, storms, seasons, and any other information you wish to
add. Draw or create a map of your landmass with the biome(s) displayed. Don’t
forget to give your location a name.

The next step is to create the organisms that are found within your ecosystem.
You will need to create three consumers and three producers that exist within
this exotic land. Name each of your newly found organisms and provide a visual
of them. You will need to think about the answers to the following questions for
each organism:
● Which biome is home to your organism? What conditions or characteristics
of that biome help your organism to survive and thrive?
● How does your organism interact with others? Consider what abiotic
factors help or hinder your organism to survive, which biotic factors help or
hinder the survival of your organism, and if your organism has a symbiotic
relationship with any other organisms.
● What does your organism eat to survive? What eats your organism? Does
your organism have a specific way of gathering or hunting for food? Does
your organism have a defense mechanism against its predators? Create a
food web that includes your organism!
● What characteristics does your organism have that help it to survive in its
environment? How does your organism contribute to the biodiversity of its
ecosystem?

Option B: You’re on an adventure across charted land and you come across
some unknown organisms.

Seeing as you are the first person to discover these organisms, you get the
privilege of naming them. Describe the biome that you were in when you found
these organisms. I am looking for physical descriptions of the biome, the climate,
average rainfall, temperatures, storms, seasons, and any other information you
wish to add. For this option you will need to develop and name four consumers
and four producers. Don’t forget to also include visuals of these newly discovered
species.
How does your organism contribute to the biodiversity of its
ecosystem?

Option C: Being the biologist that you are, you are doing some field work and
come across some organisms in their natural habitat. You decide to share
information about them with the class.

For this option, choose a biome and describe it to us include physical

descriptions of the biome, the climate, average rainfall, temperatures, storms,

seasons, and location on the World. Next you will tell us about a total of ten
organisms (a combination of producers and consumers) that actually live within
the biome of your choosing. Provide us with visuals of the organisms that you
chose. Since you are working with real organisms, you will be able to research
them and provide us with factual information. You need to answer the following
questions for all ten organisms:
● Which biome is home to the organism? What conditions or characteristics
of that biome help the organism to survive and thrive?
● How does the organism interact with others? Consider what abiotic factors
help or hinder the organism to survive, which biotic factors help or hinder
the survival of the organism, and if the organism has a symbiotic
relationship with any other organisms.
● What does the organism eat to survive? What eats the organism? Does
the organism have a specific way of gathering or hunting for food? Does
the organism have a defense mechanism against its predators? Create a
food web that includes the organism!
● What characteristics does the organism have that help it to survive in its
environment? How does the organism contribute to the biodiversity of its
ecosystem?

Your findings for all options: choose how you want to present your findings to
the class (ex. Google Slides, Powerpoint, poster board, tri fold, brochure, etc.).
