HOPE BG/AF, 2006 « Compeesson SALES, "es, IePICe = PETROLEUM INSTITUTE FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION wuu.peice.cam Introduction to ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code Don Frikken Becht Engineering Company ‘8515 HWY 50 Gerald, MO 63037 573-764-6744 (dfekken@becht.com) Course Description ‘This two-day course wil introduce partciparts to the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code. ‘The Code provides requirements forthe design, fabrication, examination and testing of ‘metalic piping systems designed for the wide variety of uid services used in the process industries. Selection of materials, pbe, valves and fitings will be discussed. Participants are eneouraged to bring a copy ofthe code (not included in course fees) to the session, Each session is conducted in a lecture/éiscussion/problem solving format designed to provide intensive instruction and guidance on understanding Code requirements. The instructor will be available fellowing each da/’s session to provide participants with further opportunity for discussion and consiceration of specific problems. Who Should Attend Engineers, senior designers, maintenance, quality assurance, inspection and ‘manufacturing personnel who work with process piping (e.g. inthe chemical, petroleum, blastic processing, pulp and paper fields) wil find it a time-saving means to broaden and Update their knowledge of piping. About The Instructor Don Frikken is an internationally recognized authority in piping design. Now employed by Becht Engineering, Don had been with Solutia, Ine. and Monsanto Company for 34 years; working on a wide range of actives including piping and mechanical design, project engineering, and engineering standards. However, Don’s principal specialty 1s. piping design, including design of complex piping systoms, piping flexibility analysis, selection of piping components including valves, development of piping standards and specifications, and developing and teaching numerous piping seminars and workshops. He is an ASME Fellow and has been active en various ASME standards committees. He Is a member and past Chair of the ASME B31. Process Piping Code committee, 3 ‘member and past Chair ofthe B31 Standards Committe, which oversees all B31 Piping Code committees, a member of the B16 Stardards Committee, and a member of the ‘ASME Board of Governors. Don has received a number of awards, and recently was awarded the ASME Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal, which recognizes outstanding contributions tothe ovelopment of documents used in ASME programs of technical codification, standardization and certification. ASME was the sole aministative sponsor. The thst publeaton of his document, American Tentative Standard code fr Pressure Piping, oocured in 1898, From 1842 through 1955, the code was publshed as the American Standard Code for Pressure Piping, ASA B31. Il was composed of separate sections for diferent industries, “These sections were spit of, starting in 1955 withthe Gas Transmssion and Distrbuton Piping Systems, ASA 31.8. ASA B31.3, Petroloum Rafinery Piping Code Saclon was frst published in 1959. A number of separato ‘sections have been prepared, mast of which have been published. The various secion designation follow. 831.1 Power Piping 31.2 Fuel Gas Piping (witdrawn in 1988) 8313 Process Piping 314 Liquid Transportation Systeme for Hydrocarbons, 831.5 Rettigeration Piping 31.6 Chemical Plant Ppng (never published) BI.7 Nuclear Piping (moved to BAPV Code Section I) 91.8 Gas Transmission and Disbibuion Ping Systems 31.9 Bullng Sarvicos Piping 31.10 Cryogenic Piping (never published) 531-11 Sly ping 31.12 Hydogen Piping (projet started in 2004) iquid Pelrolour Gas, Anhydrous Ammonia, and Alcohols ‘A cea of the section fr Chemica Pant Piping, 8.6, was completed in 1974, Howover, Rwas decided to marge {tis secton into 851-3 because the two code sections were closaly related. Ajint cede section, Chemical Plant ‘an Peroloum Refinery Ping, was pubshed n 1876. was als me tat lems such a Mid sence aloes ( ‘dich a Category M, nonmetalc ppg, and safeguerdieg were voduced nto BI 2 |n 1980 the nonmetas portions of the B31.3 Code were gathered and combined into one chapter, Chapter Vi ‘A. deat cose for Cryogenic Piping had been prepared by Section Committee 831.10 and was ready for pprovalin | 4981, Again snes the coverage overlapped with 831.3, t was decided to merge the Section Comtioes and doveiop a single Incusive Code, Ths Code was issued in 1084, In adaion, n 1984 another potentially separate code was added as new chapter to 831.3, High Pressure Piping ‘Chapter “The resutng documents @ Code thats very broad in scope, It covers fluids as benign as water anc as hazardous as muslard gas, It eoverstemporatures from cryogenic exndtons to I500°F and beyond. It covers pressures Fort ‘vacuum and atmospheric to 80,000 psi and higher. Part ofthe pilosopy of the Code stems om tis broad ‘overage, Tore sa geal deal of responsibly placed wih the Owner and lailude lo use good engineering. \with respect ote intals that appear in ont of 831.3, these have been ASA, ANSI and ASME. tis currently ‘correct to refer tothe Code a8 ASME 831.3, The inal dasignation ASA referred fo the Americen Standards ‘Aesoclaton, This boeame the Untod Stats of America Standards Insitute and than the Amesican National Standards inttute betwoon 1967 and 1968. Thus, ASA was changed to ANSI. In 1878, the Standards Commitee ‘was reorganized as a commitee operating under ASME procedures with ANSI accreitaton. Therefore, te nals [ASME now appear front of B31. These changes in auronyms have not changed the 831.3 comrnilee stuclure forthe Code.
