2015 5th Grade Team Selection Solutions

1) Since a square (D) is a special case of a rectangle with 4 equal sides and 4 equal angles, there are 4
lines of symmetry in a square (see below).
A rectangle (that is NOT a square) only has 2 lines of symmetry.
A parallelogram (that is NOT a square or rectangle) has 0 lines of symmetry.
An isosceles trapezoid has 1 line of symmetry.
An irregular trapezoid has 0 lines of symmetry.

2)  ( ) ( ) 

OR -- We could rewrite the ratio as follows:

Girls/Boys = 5/4
5/4 = G/348
(5/4) (348) = (G/348) (348)
G = (5/4) (348) = 435

3) (A) (B) = 60
List the factor pairs of 60: (1,60), (2,30), (3,20), (4,15), (5,12), (6,10).
Look for a sum of the factors that is a square number: 6+10 =16
The larger of the two factors is: 10.

4) An isosceles triangle has 2 angles that are the same.

The sum of the angles of a triangle is 180 degrees.

98 + 2A = 180 2A = 180 – 98 A = (180 – 98) / 2 = 41 degrees

5) 32 x 5 = 160

6) 2, 5, 7, 12, 19, (12+19=31),(19+31=50),(31+50=81),(50+81=131),(81+131=212)

7) 1000 meters / km
22 km (1000 m/km) = 22,000 meters OR C

8) Renata: (43)(.05) = $2.15

Janice: (423) (.01) = $4.23
$4.23 - $2.15 = $2.08

9) 47 calls
47 = 20 + 27
(20) (.10) = $2.00
(27) (.15) = $4.05
TOTAL COST = $2.00 + $4.05 = $6.05

10) List the primes between 30 and 50:

31, 37, 41, 43, 47
Add them together: 31 + 37 + 41 + 43 + 47 = 199

11. 10 % = 0.1
To find the amount of discount: $12 X .1 = $1.20
To find the sale price: $12 - $1.20 = $10.80
5 % = 0.05
To find the sales tax: $10.80 X 0.05 = $.54
To find the final price , add the sale price + sales tax : $10.80 + $.54 = $11.34

12. Add the goldfish and the angelfish: ¼ + 3/8 = 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8 This represents the part of
the aquarium that contains the goldfish and angelfish. The 6 guppies must represent 3/8 of the
aquarium (1 aquarium – 5/8 = 3/8). If 6 guppies = 3/8 then 2 guppies must represent 1/8.
Total fish in the aquarium:
Goldfish: ¼ = 2/8 4 fish
Angelfish: 3/8 6 fish
Guppies: 6 fish
Total 16 fish

13. The Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of 2 and 7 is 14.

(List the multiples of 2 and 7 until you find a match) (2,4,6,8,10,12,14) and (7, 14)
Numbers that are divisible by both 2 and 7 are the common multiples of 2 & 7. Starting
with the Lowest Common Multiple of 14, write out the multiples of 14 up to 100:
14, 28, 42, 56, 70, 84, 98
There are 7 numbers that are divisible by both 2 and 7 less than 100.

14. 3 out of 5 passes and 5 out of 8 passes is 8 out of 13passes for the complete game and this can be
represented by the fraction 8/13.
To find the percent we first find the decimal equivalent of 8/13: 8 divided by 13 = 0.615
0.615 = 61.5% Rounded the nearest percent: 61.5% is 62%

15. Since the mean of the four numbers is 166 and there are 4 numbers, the total of the four numbers
is: 166 X 4 = 664 (total)
Find the total of the two given numbers: 164 + 180 = 344
To find the total of the x and y numbers you need to subtract the total of the given numbers from the
overall total: 664-344 = 320
That leaves 320 for the total of the x and y numbers. To find the mean (average) of the x and y you need
to divide the 320 by 2: 320 divided by 2 = 160

16. The new value of the x and y numbers is: 320 + 12 – 8 = 324
Add the new value of x and y (324) to the total of 164 and 180 (344) to get the new total:
324 + 344 = 668
To find the new mean you divide the total (668) by the total number of numbers (4):
668 divided by 4 = 167

17. There are 360 degrees in a circle.

One approach to this problem is to change the probability of stopping on a white sector of 1/3 to
degrees: 1/3 of 360 = 120 degrees

2015 5th Grade Team Selection Solutions

The larger white sector is 90 degrees so the smaller white sector is: 120 – 90 = 30 degrees.
Compare the number of degrees of the smaller sector to the whole circle: 30 /360 = 1/12

18. The probability of stopping in one of the red sectors is ½. Change ½ of a circle to the number of
degrees it represents: ½ of 360 degrees = 180 degrees.
Since one of the red sections is 60 degrees and the total number of degrees for the red sections is 180
degrees, the difference which represents the larger section is: 180 – 60 = 120 degrees

19. Add the snacks and the clothing: $9 + $16 = $25

Since the total earning is $48, compare the amount spent on snacks and clothing to the total:
25/48
Change the fraction 25/48 to a decimal: 25 divided by 48 = 0.5208333…
The decimal 0.520833 to the nearest percent is 52%

20. To find the increase in earnings: 25% X 48 = 0.25 X 48 = $12

To find the amount of money spent on snacks add $12 to the original amount for snacks:
$12 + $9 = $21
