A month before Chinese New Year, preparations have already started.


Greeting cards are sent to friends and relatives near and far. Houses ae spring
cleaned and repainted to give a facelift. New clothes are either sewn or bought.
Children are given ‘ang-pow’ by the elders. Oranges are served to guest and friends.

Red-coloured clothes are common because the Chinese believe that red
brings luck. However, black is not encouraged. It is only used when there is death.

Various types of cookies and biscuits are made and given to friends and
relatives. This is to show their appreciation towards the receivers. The receivers
normally give something in return as a sign of appreciation.
