Tutorial 1: SMART Goals Handout

1. During the course of MGMT1001, what is it that you want to achieve in relation to
teamwork, communication or problem-solving? E.g. I wish to improve my communication
skills as I do not write as well as I would like.

2. Now, elaborate upon the above, and be SPECIFIC about what exactly you want to achieve.
E.g. I wish to improve my written communication skills, so that I can write a report which
is structured with a clear and definite introduction, body and conclusion. I also wish to
proof-read my work so that there are no more than two spelling mistakes in the whole
report.

3. How will you MEASURE your success? E.g. I will be successful once I have no more than
two spelling mistakes, and when my average grade for writing criteria lifts by 10%.

4. How will you ATTAIN your goal i.e. what steps will you take to turn it into a reality? E.g. I
will attain my goal by writing one practice essay and attending a literacy advisor to seek
their writing feedback and advice.

5. Show how your goals are RESULTS ORIENTED. Do they support your overall vision for
yourself? Do they begin with action-oriented words e.g. ‘To complete’, ‘to acquire’, ‘to
increase’? E.g. My goal is to decrease the average amount of spelling mistakes in my
reports by 50%.

6. Have you set TARGET DATES to achieve your goal by? E.g. My goal is to decrease the
average amount of spelling mistakes in my reports by 50% by the end of this semester.
