GOOD LUCK!
~The candidate is urged to submit with the answer paper a clear statement
of any assumptions made if doubt exists as to the interpretation of any
question that requires a written answer.”
There are 7 questions and 11 pages to this exam. Answer all questions, The value of
each question is provided. All required thermodynamic data are provided.2of ll CHEM 244
Question 1 (5)
Explain how i) increasing the boiler pressure and ii) decreasing the condenser pressure increases
the thermal efficiency of a steam plant operating under an ideal Rankine Cycle.
Question 2 (5)
Explain why itis desirable to have a refrigerant that has a i) high latent heat of vaporization as.
well as ii) a low viscosit
Question 3 (5)
A refrigeration process uses R134a as the refrigerant in a Rankine cycle. Asa design criteria, the
coefficient of performance of the refrigerator is to be 3. The cold temperature to be obtained is
~ 20°C, with saturated vapor leaving the evaporator. The quality of the R134a entering the
evaporator should be no more than 0.3. Assuming that the compressor operates isentropicall
determine the final pressure after compression required to achieve these design criteria, A P-H
diagram for R134a is attached.
Question 4 (5)
A liquefaction process has been designed to produce liquid methane. Methane is compressed
{rom 2 MPa and 300 K to 6 MPa isentropically. It is then cooled to 200 K. This is followed by
aan expansion to 0.1 MPa,
a) If the flow rate of gaseous methane into the process is 100 kg/h, how many kg of liquid
methane are produced every hour?
b) Estimate the heat capacity of methane at 6 MPa over a 20°C temperature range.
A P-H diagram for methane is attached,
Question 5 (15)
A stream of propane gas is partially liquefied by throttling from 200 atm and 370 K to 1 atm,
What fraction of the gas is liquefied in this process? The Antoine equation parameters for
propane are : A = 9.1058, B = 1872.46 K, C = - 25.16 K which gives P™'in atm. The enthalpy of
saturated liquid propane at 1 atm is 419.16 ki/kg and the enthalpy of saturated propane vapor is
848.08 ki/kg at 1 atm,

Question 6 (15)
A steam plant is designed as a combined Brayton-Rankine cycle as shown below. In the Brayton
cycle, the combustion occurs at 8 atm, generating a temperature for the gas entering the turbine
of 1300 K. The inlet air is at 300 K. The gas compressor has an efficiency of 85% and the turbine
has an efficiency of 90%. The exhaust gas (stream 5) is at 300 K and 1 atm. The gas entering the
turbine and being exhausted can be assumed to be 100% carbon dioxide (molecular weight 44
g/mol). Use y = 1.4 for the gas phase during the compression. In the Rankine cyele, liquid water
‘enters the heat exchanger at 6.2 MPa. The condenser is operated at 101.325 kPa, with saturated
‘water entering the pump. The Rankine cycle turbine also has an efficiency of 90%, while the
pump has an efficiency of 95%. If the gas flow rate through the Brayton eycle is 66.8 kg/s and
the steam flow rate through the Rankine cycle is 10 kg/s, calculate the efficiency of the plant.
