Enzymatic Fat Necrosis

Focal areas of fat destruction, typically resulting from release of activated pancreatic lipases into the substance
of the pancreas and the peritoneal cavity. The areas of white chalky deposits represent foci of fat necrosis with
calcium soap formation (saponification) at sites of lipid breakdown in the mesentery.
Acute Hemorrhagic
Pancreatitis

VPT – Viable pancreatic tissue

EFN – enzymatic fat necrosis of

the pancreatic tissue

Microscopically you will see the

outline of the fat cells. There is a
presence of shadowy bluish-purple
material.

The fat cells appear hazy to

cloudy with loss of the normal
architectural outlines
(enzymatic fat necrosis). Note
also the foci of hemorrhages in these areas.
CASEOUS NECROSIS

Cheese-like is derived from the friable white appearance of the area of necrosis.
