Materials:
US 19 needles
Tapestry needle
Crochet hook or latch hook for tassels
Bulky yarn in Black (270 yds / 250 g)
Bulky yarn in Pink (220 yds / 200g)
Remember, for every knit stitch across that you see there is a purl “valley” behind which doubles the
horizontal stitch count.
Instructions:
Work in single rib on all rows, alternate colors every two rows for stripes. Knit to desired length (just
below the knees) ending on black stripe. Weave in ends. Add fringe.
With US 19 needles and black yarn - CO 41 sts
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 pwise, *p1, k1; rep from *to end of row.
Or
Row 1 (WS): K1, *p1, k1; rep from *to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): P1, *k1, p1; rep from *to end of row.
I knit 43 black stripes (42 pink) plus cast on and bind off. Feel free to add or subtract stripes to get the
proper length (knee level), but always begin and end on a black stripe.
Fringe
Cut 80 pieces of black yarn, 13 inches long. You’ll need 40 pieces per scarf end.
Hold two pieces of yarn together and fold them in half to make the fringe. Attach the fringe in each purl
“valley” across the end of the scarf (there should be 20) using a crochet hook or latch hook.
When all the fringe has been tied, trim yarn ends to 6 inches length.
You’re going to end up with a lot of horizontal stretch thanks to the 1x1 ribbing.
I carried the yarn up the side rather than cut and weave in all those ends. Fair warning, doing this will
mean the colors on the edge of the scarf do not line up exactly with the rest of the stripes as seen
below.
The scarf is very wide, close to a foot across. Do not panic if your project seems HUGE. It is meant to be
folded in half vertically when worn.
