CVE 412/511 – Matrix Analysis of Framed Structures
Spring Semester, 2013

Objectives: The student should gain an understanding of the theory and development of methods
to analyze linear elastic framed structures using knowledge of mathematics (linear
algebra) engineering (mechanics and material behavior), and computer science. The
course will develop a foundation of experience for how building structures behave
under load through an understanding of the flexibility (matrix) method of solution.
Analytical capabilities are gained through use of computer programs that rely on
stiffness (matrix) methods of solution. The course provides a preliminary basis of
matrix analysis of structural continua, i.e., the student will begin the process of
appreciating and understanding the utility of the finite element method of analysis.

Texts: Matrix Analysis of Structures, A. Kassimali, Cengage Learning, 2010. Homework is

assigned from this text, and this text is in the bookstore.

Matrix Analysis of Framed Structures, W. Weaver, Jr., J.M. Gere, (either second or third
edition). Class notes follow the nomenclature in this text.

A First Course in Finite Element Analysis, D.L. Logan, Cengage Learning, 2007. This
text is used in CVE 512 and MME 512.

Matrix Structural Analysis, W. McGuire, R.H. Gallagher, R.D. Ziemian, John Wiley,
2000. This text is used in CVE 612 and MME 612.

Instructor: Stephen F. Duffy PhD, PE, F.ASCE (s.duffy@csuohio.edu)

CSU Office: 216-687-3874, Stillwell Hall 114
Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:00 – 4:00 PM and by appointment

Grades: Your grade for the course will be determined by your performance on homework
assignments and two exams in the following manner:

Exams - 90%
Homework - 10%

Final grades for graduate students are assigned based upon the Graduate College
grade scale: 92.5 - 100 → A; 90 - 92.5 → -A; 87.5 - 90 → +B; 82.5 - 87.5 → B; 80 -

82.5 -B; 60 - 80 → C; below 60 → F. Final grades for undergraduate students are

assigned based on the following grade scale: 92.5-100 → A; 90-92.5 → -A; 87.5-90
→ +B; 82.5-87.5 → B; 80-82.5 -B; 77.5-80 → C+; 70-77.5 → C; 60-70 → D Below
60 → F. . Exams are not graded on a curve. It is general policy not to give make-up
exams for students who are absent from scheduled exams. Any student absent from a
scheduled exam automatically receives a score of zero for that exam unless arrangements
have been made prior to the exam.

Tentative Exam Schedule:

Material Date
Exam I January 15, 2013 through February 21, 2013 March 7, 2013
Exam II February 26, 2013 through May 2, 2013 May 9, 2013

Accommodations For Students With Disabilities:

Educational access is the provision of classroom accommodations, auxiliary aids and services to
ensure equal educational opportunities for all students regardless of their disability. Any student who
feels he or she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the
Office of Disability Services at (216)687-2015. Accommodations need to be requested in advance
and will not be granted retroactively
