Objectives: The student should gain an understanding of the theory and development of methods
to analyze linear elastic framed structures using knowledge of mathematics (linear
algebra) engineering (mechanics and material behavior), and computer science. The
course will develop a foundation of experience for how building structures behave
under load through an understanding of the flexibility (matrix) method of solution.
Analytical capabilities are gained through use of computer programs that rely on
stiffness (matrix) methods of solution. The course provides a preliminary basis of
matrix analysis of structural continua, i.e., the student will begin the process of
appreciating and understanding the utility of the finite element method of analysis.
Matrix Analysis of Framed Structures, W. Weaver, Jr., J.M. Gere, (either second or third
edition). Class notes follow the nomenclature in this text.
A First Course in Finite Element Analysis, D.L. Logan, Cengage Learning, 2007. This
text is used in CVE 512 and MME 512.
Matrix Structural Analysis, W. McGuire, R.H. Gallagher, R.D. Ziemian, John Wiley,
2000. This text is used in CVE 612 and MME 612.
Grades: Your grade for the course will be determined by your performance on homework
assignments and two exams in the following manner:
Exams - 90%
Homework - 10%
Final grades for graduate students are assigned based upon the Graduate College
grade scale: 92.5 - 100 → A; 90 - 92.5 → -A; 87.5 - 90 → +B; 82.5 - 87.5 → B; 80 -
