Lesson Plan # 6 Title: Solving Exponential Equations with Unlike Bases

Performance Objective:

Performance Objective #14: Given a calculator, students will solve an exponential

equation with unlike bases of the type 8𝑥−6 = 1358 in 2 out of 3 questions on a quiz.

Resources or Materials Needed:

Computer, document camera, and projector

Warm-up Activity

Exit Ticket

(See instructional material page for all activities)

Time: 75 minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities:

Warm Up Activity: (15 min)

Solve the following elementary exponential equations

1. 3𝑥 − 27 = 0
2
2. 3𝑥 + 7𝑥
= 27−4

3. 43𝑥 − 6 = 1
16

Step 2: Content Presentation:

As a class go over the warm up activity questions. (10 min)

As a class go through the following examples, express your answer as both an exact expression

and a decimal approximation rounded to two decimal places: (30 min)

 𝑒 2𝑥 − 9 = 122𝑥

 7−𝑥 − 2 = 1299

 8𝑥 − 2 = 1580
 3𝑒 4𝑥 + 15 = 15

 𝑒 3𝑥 + 4 = 132

Step 3: Learner Participation:

Exit Ticket Questions: (20 min)

1. When do you take the ln of both sides?

Solve each of the following equations. Express your answer as both an exact expression and

a decimal approximation rounded to two decimal places.

2. 8𝑥 + 8 = 423

3. 3𝑒 4𝑥 + 2 = 15
3𝑥
4. 𝑒 3𝑥 + 11 = 8 5

Step 4: Assessment:

Students will take a mini-test over this material using an online software. (See assessment page)

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities:

Student completes Section 7.5 certification in Hawkes (computer homework software).

Lesson Plan Summary:

At the beginning of this lesson have student complete the warm up activity questions that

are a review over lesson #2. The instructor will then go over the warm up activity questions and

go over examples of solving exponential equations with unlike bases. To give student practice

have them complete the exit ticket questions.
