CHAPTER II

RESEARCH METHODS

In this chapter the researcher discusses the research design, population and

sample, research instrument, validity and reliability, data collection, and data

analysis.

2.1 Research Design

The research design which is used in this study was experimental research.

There are several types of experimental research; some of them are True

experimental, Quasi-experimental, and Pre-experimental. Experimental research

design is the research design that is used to measure the hypothesis of a study, and

to know the result of the study, the data is analyzed statistically (Ary, Jacobs and

Razavieh 2002, p.280). This study is quasi experimental research in which the

researcher lacks control over the assignment to control the condition. The

researcher chose quasi experimental because in educational settings, very often it

is not possible to select the sample randomly out of all the population students.

This study is trying to know the effect of using Jeopardy Game in teaching

reading comprehension descriptive text at eleventh grade of SMA Kristen Petra

Malang. In this research, there are two classess which are chosen as the

experimental group and control group. The researcher taught the experimental

group by using Jeopardy Game in teaching reading, but in control group applied

conventional technique. There are two variables in this research, the independent

variable is Jeopardy Game and the dependent variable is the students reading
