Introduction

If you mention magic to people, they will think about stage or street magic.
However, there is an even deeper meaning of magic that our ancestors have been
using since the beginning of time. Magick is a term used by people who practice
the art of witchcraft to define the force that utilizes power, knowledge and
wisdom. It is used to change things that are changeable. It is also defined as the
energy intended to make changes.

Its aim is to train minds by harnessing as well as making accessible higher brain
faculties like intuition, creativity and inspiration by drawing the power of the
unconscious and subconscious brain. It assumes belief in subtle and small
energies that we cannot see but has profound effects on us and directing them to
make changes. It is an intriguing discipline that has attracted a lot of people who
want to harness the invisible energies around them to make positive changes in
their lives. If you are one of the followers of magick and you don’t know where
to begin, then this book will serve as your guide.

Chapter 1: Understanding Magick

Many people will scratch their heads if you ask them to define what magick is.
Magick, as an art and science, is difficult to explain unless you keep yourself
abreast with the necessary information related to it. Thus, this chapter will
discuss about what you need to know about magick.

What Is Magick?

Magick is the science and art of causing change in things in conformity to the
will. It is also defined as the energy that circulates within the universe of the
Gods and flows towards humanity. It is spelled with a “k” so that it can be easily
differentiated from magic tricks performed by illusionists.

It is the aim of magic to train our minds in drawing the power of our
subconscious mind so that we can use our brains capacity to the fullest. Magick
employs meditation, voice work, breathing control, visualization, rituals and
drama which are all designed in order to improve both the body and mind so that
we are able to feel and wield even the subtlest energies around us.
Some people believe that magick is a type of ancient religion that is being
resurrected by its followers. However, the big difference between magick and
the religious path is that the former is more dynamic and it puts emphasis on the
work for change. Unlike religious paths, there are no gurus central to its beliefs
but there are fellow students with different experiences and perspectives that
teach one another.

Magick also works with many symbols and they serve as the language of the
unconscious. The symbols function differently which include confounding the
ego, perceive truths, censor mechanisms and other revelations. The thing is that
symbols provide harmony with the different types of energies present around us.

Being a student of magic is a painful process and it often involves a lot of hard
work when it comes to dealing with strong energies around us. It takes a lot of
practice and this book will serve as your guide as beginners.

Elemental Energies in Magick

There are five primary phases of energy accepted in magick and these energies
come with their common attributes and qualities. This chapter will discuss about
the five energies essential for magick believers.

Fire: Fire is an essential element used in purification and defense. It
is visualized as red energy and it is believed to be the main energy or
force needed for expansion.

Water: Water is the energy visualized as blue energy. It is used in
healing, regeneration, cleansing and movement. It is also the
universal force for contraction.

Air: Air refers to intelligence and other mental stuff. It has a strong
energy that can push something away from it or draw it near. It can
also purify by blowing out bad energy. It is often visualized as yellow
energy and it is the universal force that reconciles water and fire.

Earth: Earth refers to solidity, strength and permanence. It also has
regenerative capabilities. It is perceived as green energy and is
thought to be the combination of water, fire and air thus it is the
universal force that solidifies all physical manifestations.

Spirit: The element of spirit is visualized as the white energy and is
used for anything. However, you need to work with it to get the feel
of it so that you can decide on how to use it. This is the reason why
many magick followers find it challenging to control this energy. Also
called Akasha, it is the universal principle that covers all things.

As a follower of magick, it is important that you know how to use all energies
and channel them to yourself. The best way to channel the energy to you is to
meditate and imagine yourself being filled with the element without being
harmed. It is important that students of magick spend time meditation and
balancing their self with each element so that they can put them to good use.
Chapter 2: Basic Magick Rituals

Rituals are essential for students of magick. They are necessary because they
result to external and internal changes through the will. Below are the reasons
why magick rituals are very important for students and followers of magick.

To help beginners to learn how to shift their mental gears which can
help them achieve meditative state of their mind and will.
To help them focus themselves to the tune of their mind particularly
to the type of energies that can help them achieve their goals in an
orderly manner.
Rituals also serve as mental training for beginners but advance
magick students can use it to improve their focus and skills in
harnessing energies and using them to make changes.
To be used in formality as some spirits and energies require rituals for
formality in order to respond to the invocation.

Rituals are very important tools used by students of magick. They do it so that
they can focus on their will and to accomplish their goals. This chapter will
discuss about the basic magick rituals that you need to know when practicing
magick.

The Qabalistic Cross

The qabalistic cross is the most fundamental of all rituals a magick student
should learn. It uses the symbol of the cross which represents the circular
horizon and cardinal directions of north, south, east and west.

In this ritual, you need to visualize a cross made of brilliant light that is shining
through and within your body to symbolize the spiritual orientation and the
intersection of different primal dimensions. The vertical line emanates from the
sphere of white light from the crown of the head and moving down the body
towards the feet. This forms the connection between the Source of All and here
which refers to the present moment.

On the other hand, the horizontal line of action is the brilliant light that runs
from the sphere of red light from the right shoulder through the top of the heart
which is the center of the sphere. This line continues to the left shoulder but
continues on as blue light. This line expresses the truth that you are conscious
thus you have the will to make decisions based on your values.
The ritual of making the qabalistic cross is a magickal method that allows one to
gain spiritual orientation and consciousness so that they will know here and what
they are going to do. To perform the ritual, below are important steps that you
need to take to be able to make the qabalistic cross.

Eliminate the distractions and noise while doing this ritual. You can
do this inside your meditation room or a nook in your garden.

Start by standing while facing towards the east where the sun rises.

Visualize a glowing sphere of bright white light forming about 6
inches on top of your head. The light that you are imagining should
be blinding. Once the image of the blinding light is formed in your
head, raise your right head, and imagine placing the tips of your
fingers on the sphere of light to pull it downward so that it touches
your forehead. While doing this, invoke the word “Ateh” which is a
Hebrew word for “thou art”. This invocation acknowledges the Being
of God.

Move your right hand down from the forehead and let it hover a few
inches from your chest. Imagine that the light is slowly moving
downward until it reaches your feet.

Visualize another sphere of white light forming around your feet.
Touch your chest with your right hand and say “Malkuth” which
means “The Kingdom” in Hebrew. Then place both hands on your
side as you visualize the upright line of the cross for a few minutes.

Slowly raise your left hand and allow it to hover a few inches from
your right shoulder. Imagine a sphere of burning red light forming
around as well as within the right shoulder. The sphere is called
Geburah sphere and it symbolizes vitality and power to defend your
boundaries and ward off negative influences. Gently touch your left
hand to your right shoulder and utter “ve Geburah” which means “the
power.”

Keep your left hand to your right shoulder and slowly lift your right
hand so that it hovers on your left shoulder. Imagine a blue sphere on
your left shoulder. Touch your left shoulder with your right hand and
say “ve Gedullah” which translates to “the glory”. This sphere
symbolizes your capacity to love, give, forgive and be compassionate
to others. Your hands should cross over your chest.

While your hands are still crossed over the chest, visualize a
horizontal line of light that connects the red and blue spheres from the
chest. The complete horizontal line represents your moral and ethical
actions. Visualize the two lines intersecting with glowing yellow-gold
spheres which represent the enlightened consciousness. This sphere
balances the vertical and horizontal lines that make up the qabalistic
cross. Also called the Tiphereth sphere, imagine it moving downward
so that it is the same level of your heart and it forms a triangle with
gedullah and geburah spheres. Utter the word “la olam” which means
“forever” in Hebrew.

Conclude by clasping both your hands together like in prayer and
hold them against your chest. Say “Amen” to express your conscious
decision to improve your consciousness to spiritual balance.

Remain standing and visualize the light glow brightly inside you as
though forming a protective sphere or the Magic Circle of Spiritual
Protection around you.

Lesser Ritual of Pentagram

The lesser ritual of pentagram is a magick ritual that is used by the Golden Dawn
order and it has become a mainstay ritual in magick. The ritual is considered as
preliminary and is taught to the students before they advance to the inner circle.

The ritual is very dynamic and it uses a lot of visualization, gestures and
pronouncement of powerful words. Magick students also use prayer and
invocation for this ritual. It is used in banishing impure and chaotic elements
from the circle of training using pentagrams. This section will discuss what you
need to know about the lesser ritual of the pentagram.

Equipment Needed

To perform this ritual, magick students need to prepare certain equipment for
efficacy. Below are the types of equipment needed in order to start the ritual.

Tau robe: A tau robe is a ritual dress worn by magician. It is usually
a long robe with an attached hood.

Altar: The alter functions as the center of the ritual space. This is also
here instruments that represent the four elements are placed.

Sword: The sword gesture the Qabalistic Cross points. It is also used
to draw the pentagram as well as the magic circle. A dagger can also
be used in the absence of a cross.

How Is The Ritual Done?

The lesser ritual of pentagram is one of the easiest magick ritual beginners can
do and below is a discussion on how this particular ritual is done.

Establish the Qabalistic Cross: The qabalistic cross is essential in
performing other types of magick rituals. It allows you to respond
your body and energy to the Tree of Life. Refer to Section A of this
chapter on how to establish the qabalistic cross.

Create the pentagrams: Create the pentagram. To do this, draw in
the air the pentagram with each point towards one of the cardinal
points. Each point is associated with the name of a God. Below are
the specific steps on how to build the pentagram:
Turn to the south and make the pentagram but utter “adni”
(Ah-DOH-nai).
Turn to the west and make the pentagram but vibrate “ahih”
(Eh-HEH-yeh).
Turn to the north and make the pentagram but utter “agla”
(Ah-Geh-LAh).
Turn to the east and make the pentagram but vibrate “yhvh”
(YAH-weh).

Invoke the archangels: The invocation of the archangels is really
important to complete the pentagram. Each cardinal point is
represented by a different archangel. Below are the steps on how to
invoke the archangels for each cardinal point.
Once you are done drawing the pentagram, return to the
east and extend your arms and say “Before me Raphael”.
Raphael is pronounced as Rah-Fay-el]. Visualize the form
of the Angel Raphael wearing yellow robes before you
when invoked.
Next, say “Behind me Gabriel” while still facing the east.
Gabriel, pronounced as Gah-bree-el, is visualized in the
west with blue robes.
Invoke Michael (Mee-kai-el) by saying “On my right hand
Michael” and visualize in the south wearing red robes.
Last, utter “On my left hand Uriel” with Uriel pronounced
as Ur-ee-el. The Angel Uriel is visualized coming from the
north with green robes.

Lastly, end your ritual by saying in proper order “For about me flames the
pentagram” and “And in the column shines the six-rayed Star”. It is important to
make repeated practice to be able to perfect your skills in making the pentagram.

Notes on Making the Lesser Ritual of Pentagram

This particular ritual is used to clear as well as define the astral and mental space
and banish unnecessary feelings and thoughts that may hamper your focus. It is
also used to open and close the ceremonial working and make the transition back
to the awareness. To be able to successfully do this ritual, below are some
important notes that you need to remember.

Do not let the point of the weapon fall when you start making the
pentagram as this will make the energy go down back to the earth.
Visualize a flaming pentagram in front of you and make sure that you
draw them three feet high in front of you with perfect geometric
proportions. A flaming pentagram means that your focus is very
strong during the ritual.
Do not let your mind wander while you are making the pentagram as
this will remove all the force and power in your pentagram.

Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram

The lesser ritual of the hexagram is one of the rituals written by Thelema
founder Aleister Crowley that has been adapted by all magick users everywhere.
It is created in order to assist the students in learning different elementary
aspects of banishing and invoking powers related to the elements.

The hexagram and the elements and connected together by the sun which the
former symbolizes. The sun, being the source of matter and energy in the solar
system, affects the different elements in the world. The thing is that when we
gaze up at the sun, our soul immediately assumes the same shape of the sun by
creating an association. By performing the lesser ritual of the hexagram, it is
possible to access the sun’s power in its various manifestations. Thus, this
section will discuss what you need to know about this ritual.

Variations of the Hexagrams

Each element is related to one another and the sun is a powerful energy that
binds everything. There are four variations of the hexagram that you need to
know of and below is a discussion of what they are all about and how they are
used in making magick rituals.

Fire hexagram: Imagine a hexagram made of fire inside you and an
integral part of yourself. This type of hexagram creates radiant energy
that drives us.
Air hexagram: The air hexagram is ever expanding thus it is
inspirational and has the ability to clarify the cosmos. Just like air, it
has the ability to increase the fire energy around us.
Water hexagram: This refers to the emotions as well as feelings of
the sun. It also refers to the love for all things that the sun generates.
After all, the sun is a generous provider to all living things on earth.
Earth hexagram: Also called the quintessence hexagram, the earth
hexagram provides balance of energy and expression of matter. It is
represented by love and expansion. Since it is quintessence energy, it
rebalances itself and creates dynamic harmony.

The triangles of the lesser ritual of the hexagram are placed in order around the
circle such that the fire belongs to the east, the south to the earth, the west to the
air, and the north to the fire. If placed properly, these hexagrams have a lot of
effects to the body. For instance, the physical effect include greater health
particularly better circulation and respiration while emotional effects include
feelings of unity with the cosmos, increase sympathy, clarity and joy.

How to Perform the Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram

The lesser ritual of the hexagram does not involve too much complicated steps
thus beginners of magick can easily follow the rituals. Below are the steps on
how to perform the lesser ritual of the hexagram.

Face the east and do the qabalistic cross.
Trace the hexagram of fire in the east the thrust a dagger into its
center and charge the visualized figure by vibrating “Ararita.”
Turn to the south and trace the hexagram of earth and thrust a dagger
to its center and visualize the figure. Vibrate “Ararita.”
Turn towards the west and create the hexagram of air. Put the dagger
onto the center and visualize the figure. Vibrate “Ararita.”
Face the north and trace the hexagram of water last. Put the dagger by
force to its center and vibrate “Ararita.”
Return to the east again and perform the following incantations.
Before saying the incantations, extend your arms to form a Tau Cross
which is characterized of having your arms laterally on your side to
create a letter T. Say each words in the following order.
“I.N.R.I” (utter each letter)
“Yod Nun Resh Yod” which is pronounced as yode-oon-
raysh-yode. While saying the letters, draw them in the air
from right to left.
“Virgo, Isis, Mighty Mother”
“Scorpio, Apophis, Destroyer”
“Sol, Osiris, Slain and Risen”
“Isis, Apophis, Osiris”
Through the incantation or keyword analysis, raise your arms and lift
your head upwards for each incantation.
Vibrate strongly the words “IAO” pronounced as (EE-Ah-Oh).
Return your arms to the Tau Cross position and utter “The Sign of
Osiris Slain.”
Create the sign of the mourning of Isis and say “L, the Sign of the
Mourning of Isis.”
Make the sign of Typhon and Apophis by saying “V, the Sign of
Typhon and Apophis.”
Cross your arms on to your chest to create the letter X and bow your
head while saying “X, the Sign of the Osiris Risen.”
Say slowly “L” with feeling and give the sign of the Mourning of Isis
by drawing it on air.
Say in a similar manner “V” and draw on the air the Sign of Apophis
and Typhon.
Say “X” in a similar manner and give the sign of Osiris Risen.
Say “L.X.V.” in one word.
Return to the Sign of the Osiris Slain which is the Tau Cross and say
“The Light…”
Now re-cross your arms on the chest in the Sign of Osiris Risen and
say “…of the Cross.”

Notes on Making the Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram

There are many names of deities involved in the lesser ritual of hexagram.
Below are the names that you need to vibrate in this particular ritual.

I.N.R.I: This refers to Igne Natura Renovatur Integra which means
“The whole of nature is renewed by fire.” Practitioners of magick use
I.N.R.I. as a redemptive force of the universe that activates energies
within the subconscious mind of the practitioner.
Virgo, Isis, Mighty Mother: This refers to Virgo that is associated
with Egyptian goddess Isis who is the great mother of Horus.
Scorpio, Apophis, Destroyer: Scorpio is associated with the
Apophis, the brother and murderer of Osiris.
Sol, Osiris, Slain and Risen: Sol refers to the sun which is associated
with Osiris who is the resurrected god in Egyptian mythology.
IAO: Refers to the creation, destruction and resurrection of things.
Ararita: Ararita is formed from the Hebrew word “One is His
Beginning, One is His Individuality, His permutation is One” which
refers to the divine being that controls the universe.
Chapter 3: Exercises to Develop Your Magick Skills

Your skills to invoke energies around you do not develop overtime. In fact, many
students of magick train for years to be able to be good at what they do. There
are many simple exercises that you can do to develop your magick skills and this
chapter will discuss all there is that you need to know about developing your
skills.

How to Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind

Everyone has a small voice at the back of our minds that chatter random
thoughts. These random thoughts are called internal dialogue and the random
thoughts that we think only maintains our focus to the physical world. If you are
a student of magick, you need to be able to discipline your mind so that you
don’t start rambling randomly. The problem with entertaining with our internal
dialogue is that we send false messages that make us believe that our lives are
going in the wrong direction.

Fortunately, the brain has good plasticity and you can program your
subconscious mind using mantra exercises. By doing so, you will be able to do
the magick rituals properly and invoke spirits and energies properly without any
negative force hindering in front of you. Below are some mind exercises that you
can do to discipline your subconscious mind.

Use positive phrases: Tell yourself that you believe that you can
achieve your goals. If you feel down, choose phrases that assert your
happiness. Make sure that you keep the phrases short and simple. For
instance, you can tell yourself daily “I am confident” or “I am relaxed
and have free reign of my own destiny” to boost yourself. Remember
that you cannot do the rituals properly if your mind is clouded by
doubts thus this exercise is very crucial.

Relax your body: Sit or lay down in a comfortable position. Breathe
deeply and slowly just as you would during meditation. Do this for
several minutes to clear up your head from any negative thoughts that
you are entertaining. It is okay for you to fall asleep because sleeping
draws out your subconscious mind which is what you really wanted
hone your skills in magick.

Use a string of beads: When meditating, use a string of beads to help
count the number of repetitions without causing distraction while
performing your meditation.

The Middle Pillar Exercise

The Middle Pillar Exercise is considered as the groundwork of all developmental
work in magick. It is the basis of magick and failure not to execute it properly
can take toll in any attempts when doing different magick rituals.

This exercise is taken from Sephiroth or the Tree of Life. This exercise centers
on suppressing the superficial mind which prevents people from using their
creativity. This chapter will give the details on how you can do the middle pillar
exercise to harness the energy of Sephiroth.

Face the west of your working area. Once you are facing the west,
you should be able to locate the pillars of mercy and severity which
should be on both your left and right sides. The White Pillar of Mercy
should be on your left while the Black Pillar of Severity should be on
your right. You will become the Middle Pillar in this exercise.
Raise your consciousness to the area above the crown of your head.
This is the Light of Kether. From this area, imagine a sphere of
brilliant white light which will symbolize the core of your Being.
Vibrate and utter “Eheieh.”
Imagine the light beaming down the middle pillar (you) from the
Kether down to the level of your neck. From this spot, imagine
another small but brilliant white light. This will symbolize the Daath
center which creates a conscious link between your ego and divinity.
Vibrate and utter “YHVH Elohin.”
From the Daath center, bring the light down to the middle tube again
until it reaches your heart. Imagine a bright light in your heart. This
area is also dubbed as Tiphareth center. Once you feel the heat
strongly, utter “YHVH Eloah Ve-Daath.”
From the Tiphareth center, bring the light down to the genital region.
This region is called the Yesod center. Imagine another brilliant white
sphere in this area and vibrate “Shaddai El Chai.”
Imagine the light from the Yesod center going down to your feet and
ankles. This region is called the Malkuth center. Vibrate and utter
“Adonai ha-Aretz.”
Make the qabalistic cross to indicate that you have successfully called
the light of your Kether thus balancing your aura.

Other Collection of Simple Exercises

There are many other exercises that you can do to improve your skills in magick
as well as increase your receptivity in collecting the energies around you. This
chapter will discuss about the other simple exercises that you can do to improve
your mind.

Develop Your Mental Visualization Skills

Close your eyes and imagine a perfect square in front of it. You can have it in
any color that you want but it is recommended to use the color yellow to
symbolize the symbol of Prithivi or the Golden Dawn. Try holding the image in
your mind for as long as you can without it losing its shape and color. Practice
this every day and try to hold the image as long as you can. This is a good
exercise in developing your mental visualization skills.

Develop Your Psychic Skills

This exercise requires someone to show you the deck of cards. Close your eyes
and have someone take a normal deck of cards in front of you. Ask that person
to draw one card in front of you and try to guess the color of the card. You can
also try to guess the number on the card. If you have an improving psychic
ability, then you will be able to feel that red cards are warmer than black cards.

Develop Your Psychic Tactile Sensitivity

This particular exercise will help you develop the psychic sensitivity of your
touch. Use a quartz crystal and feel the outer edge of its energy field using one
hand. The thing is that everything in this world has an aura and a clear quartz
crystal has a very strong one thus making it easier for beginners to feel the
energy charge well. You can hold your hand out a couple of feet away from the
quartz crystal and slowly bringing it closer. Try to feel a gentle resistance as your
hand draws near the crystal. Do these exercises regularly. In fact, if you get
better, you will be able to feel an energy bubble around the crystal or even see
the aura around it visually.

Another exercise that you can do is to blindfold yourself and try to navigate your
way around your house. By blindfolding yourself, you are trying to rely on your
other senses thus improving their capacities. While being blindfolded, try to feel
the energy around the objects inside your house. The energies of your furniture
create an aura that will serve as boundaries so that you will not hit them. This
exercise can be a bit dangerous so be careful while doing this. It also helps you
have an assistant to help you avoid getting injured during the exercise.

Exercise on How to See Auras

Not everyone is blessed to see auras but with practice you will have the ability to
visualize them. Visualizing auras is very important because it allows you to
harness these energies well. Being able to see auras can be difficult and it might
take a while to get a hang of it. Use a person on an animal and do not look
directly to it. Use your peripheral vision and allow your mind to relax for a
while. At first, you might see a haze around a person or animal that will
disappear almost entirely. Do these exercise daily so that you can become
proficient in seeing them.

Conclusion

Magick is the art that allows us to harness the energies around us so that we can
cause change in accordance to our will. Unlike stage magic, magick is not about
illusion and deception. It is about understanding nature and harnessing its power
to make positive change in our lives. Magick is all about improving our minds so
that we can also improve ourselves and other people. It is an art that everyone
should follow in order to be able to live fulfilling lives.
