Chapter 1

Introduction

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There are four different types of bullying that encompass the wide range of

bullying behaviors seen in around schools today.

(1).Verbal bullying can include teasing, inappropriate comments, name calling,

threats and offensive hand gestures. And of these acts in written form also constitute

verbal bullying. (2).Social bullying can include intentionally leaving someone out of

activities, excluding them from lunch tables or other groups, telling other children not to

be friends within someone, embarrassing someone in public and rumour spreading.

(3).Physical bullying Includes hitting, kicking, spitting, pushing and stealing or breaking

someone’s belongings.(4). Cyber bullying victims of cyber bullying will exhibit similar

behavior to victims of social media and other online channels.

Effective bullying prevention programs at school tend to be school-wide and

involve education of students, teachers, administrators, and parents on what bullying is and the

extent to which it is harmful for all involved, understanding how others may view victims,

and how to get help. Yearly surveys of kids can help maintain awareness of how severe

the bullying problem is in a school. Just informing the parents of bullying victims tends

to improve the victim child's quality of life. Successful anti-bullying programs increase

playground supervision, provide clear consequences for bullying, and teach students who
are bystanders to bullying how to stand up for victims so that bullying behavior gains a

stigma rather than being socially beneficial.

Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can

negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it

before it starts. There are a number of things school staff can do to make schools safer

and prevent bullying.

Bullying is a form of youth violence that can be inflicted physically, verbally,

socially (e.g., spreading rumors), or by damaging a young person's property. It can harm a

young person physically, emotionally, and academically. Beyond the individual, bullying

can hurt peers, families, schools, and neighborhoods.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Bully-victims may also be differentiated by the ways that they react to being victimized.

For example, those most likely to respond aggressively to being targeted by bullies are young

people who already display conduct and anti-social behavioural problems compared to young

people who respond in other ways (Dooley,Shaw & Cross,2012; Wright & li,2013).A

longitudinal study that followed participants at a number of time points between the ages of 9

and 26 years found that bully-victims, Identified in childhood or adolescence, were most at risk

for all measured negative outcomes including;poor educational achievement, poor physical

health, involvement in risky or illegal behaviours, and social problems, when compared to all other

groups(Wolke,Copeland,Angold & Costello,2013).This indicates that those who are involved in

bullying at a younger ages as both bullies and victims are likely to experience a range of

negative behavioural difficulties that may persist into adulthood.
