Audition Requirements

Rising Grades 6-12

SCALES ALL INSTRUMENTS


All 12 Major Scales.
 Look at sheet for rhythm.
 Play two octaves when possible
 Judges will ask for three scales of their choosing.
 Drummers not required to play scales

AUDITION PIECE
Big Band Excerpt for your respective instrument

SIGHT READING
A short excerpt from the jazz idiom will be provided for all students to sight-read at the audition.

IMPROVISATION
Improvise on 2 choruses of a Bb blues with CD accompaniment.

Additional Rhythm Section Requirements:

Drums: Demonstrate each of the following feels for 16 bars include a fill to set up bars 8 and 16:
Medium Up Swing, Funk, Bossa Nova, Med Swing with brushes.

Trade fours by keeping time for four bars, and then improvising for four bars on two choruses of the blues.

Piano/Vibes: Comp one chorus of B-flat Blues

Guitar: Comp one chorus of B-flat Blues, Freddie Green style.

Bass: Walk 2 Choruses on a B-flat Blues.
