CRITERIA FOR ANALYSING SEXUAL RIGHTS

Availability:
It means whether there are contraceptives available or not. In PeruThe public sector distributes
contraceptives to almost the 70% of women in childbearing age (15-40) Which is a good thing, but
we still have to work out on the 30%.
Accessibility:
This means Whether everybody have access to contraceptives or not. This criteria is correlated
with inequality and poverty. Women in the jungle, poor women, women in rural areas, non Spanish
speaker women, uneducated women, etc are more likely to get pregnant or sexually transmitted
diseases. They have less access to information and less access to contraceptives.
Acceptability:
Okay, so information and contraceptives can be available and accessible, but not necessarily
acceptable. To this day, some sexuality aspects are still taboos in some areas. There is not enough
communication between teens and their parents. They both rather not to talk about it. Teens are
uncomfortable and sometimes even ashamed to do it and sometimes not even parents have the
answer to their questions or concerns. In some conservative families is even ‘prohibited’. Since
we’re kids our curiosity is inhibited. And in schools things are no different.

There are also many myths about contraceptives. That they cause cancer, make you fat, cause
infertility . According to the American Cancer Society, women who use oral contraceptives have a
lower risk of ovaries cancer.
