A media studies degree will give you the opportunity to learn a range of subject-specific skills. They may include an

BA (Hons) Media Production

Our creative-rich Media Production course focuses on helping you to gain the wide range of knowledge and skills
necessary to become a media practitioner

Media Production is an industry-focused course with its core disciplines being film, audio production and digital
media design, underpinned by scriptwriting. Students engage with each of these in their first year. The second year
allows you to build on this as you learn to work across media forms and platforms in ways that reflect many of the
changes that media industries are currently undergoing. By the third year you can specialise, and much of the focus
is on your Graduate Production Project, a piece of work developed and made in whatever media form (or forms) you
choose to work. This will give you a flavour of what it takes to succeed in this challenging but rewarding industry.

What’s more, the course is designed in dialogue with industry partners and aims to equip future media workers who
are:

The entire degree is assessed by coursework and you’ll receive regular feedback on your work to ensure you’re
progressing appropriately. By the time you finish the course you’ll have the tools to position yourself as a rounded
graduate on a career pathway of your choosing. To aid this journey you’ll develop a critical understanding of moving
image production and digital media development, as well as audio and radio production.

For 2019 entry: The entry requirements for this course are 112 - 120 tariff points including a minimum of 2 A-levels
or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

third year … entry not so steep either

BA (Hons) Television Production

If you've got ambitions to enter the television industry as a programme maker, then this is the course for you. It is
designed to give you an excellent overview of the sector, while providing you with all the skills you need to go into
the role of producer or director.

Comment: I definitely like to be the decision maker so being a producer appeals

BA (Hons) Film

The course is designed to give you the opportunity to explore and experiment with different aspects of filmmaking.

For 2019 entry: The entry requirements for this course are 112 - 128 tariff points including a minimum of 2 A levels
or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: 112 tariff points (Grade DMM).

GCSEs: GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics grade C (or grade 4 in the reformed GCSE grading) or equivalent
qualifications.

BA (Hons) Marketing Communications with Advertising...

There is an increasing demand for graduates with a specialism as well as broader knowledge of marketing
communications practice. 4 years with placement year in company

Comment: I wonder if advertising might be something I could be good at… I’m a good communicator and good at
selling things to people… can see myself advertising e.g. in automotive industry , wonder if I should look at this in
more detail

Comment: I like Brighton as a place and wonder if this would suit me more as a place.. and the course sounds
industry based which I like – I also have family locally

I wonder if I might be better living out, in a flat maybe

I think student life in a big block might not suit me as well although I’m sociable I think lots of students might irritate
me

Music Media and Business

A-levels or BTEC

Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBC–CCC (112–96 UCAS Tariff points), or BTEC Extended Diploma
DDM–DMM. You will be considered if your predicted grades fall within this range, but any offer will be made based
on assessment of portfolio and interview.

Comment: this is a new course and appeals, I love music and combining media and business sounds really interesting
I’d need to think about portfolio… but with BTEC I could use my music video etc

This course is distinguished by its combination of strong conceptual and theoretical media studies training with
hands-on learning opportunities in a digital media context.

You’ll complete a four-week placement and a longer live project in an industry setting, both fully supported by the
placement office.

You’ll study media business, digital marketing, media management, journalism, community, social and mobile
media and develop your ability to understand and critically analyse the theory and practice of a variety of media,
examining form, content, distribution and consumption

Media, Industry and Innovation BA(Hons)

Our Media, Industry and Innovation degree is designed to equip entrepreneurial media students with the skills to
play their part in transforming the digital media landscape.

If you’re planning a career in the creative industries or in digital media, this course will give you the creative,
technical and business knowledge you need to excel in fields including online publishing, social media,
entertainment, digital marketing, public relations and branding.

Comment: Not sure about this one but think would like to take a look as entrepreneur attracts and digital media to
support this could be good .. don’t want to be on a computer all the time though !

Course structure
The syllabus of this degree is based on the material of the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, which covers five main areas:
essential public affairs
essential media law
reporting
shorthand
portfolio development.
On top of these core elements, you learn skills in digital and multimedia journalism, which are becoming increasingly
central to industry practice. You also take a work placement in the final year so you can experience a professional
journalistic environment.

Comment; the idea of being a sports journalist is an attractive one to me… the course does seem to have a lot of
placements and practical experience but I’m not sure its quite what I want

FILM STUDIES (BA)

Moving images are the creative life force of the modern era. Studying them provides a unique means for you to
better understand the world you live in. Explore the diversity of film and television culture as you explore how the
moving image relates to history, politics, philosophy, sociology, the visual arts, drama and literature.
This course will move you through the foundations of film analysis, theory and history to develop your understanding
of specific national and historic film
cultures. Having explored the breadth of the subject, you’ll then be able to follow your academic curiosity by
specialising in topics of particular interest. In your third year, you’ll also have the opportunity to apply for a place on a
specialist film production module in delivered exclusively by the world-renowned London Film School.
