MUSIC
“Music is the healing force of the universe.”
¬ Albert Ayler
The last time I had a mammogram, I got a big surprise — and it was a good one. A string
quartet was playing just outside the doors of the breast imaging center, and my thoughts
immediately shifted from “What are they going to find on the mammogram?” to “Is that Schubert,
or Beethoven?” By the time my name was called, I had almost forgotten why I was there.
The unexpected concert was the work of Holly Chartrand and Lorrie Kubicek, music therapists
and co-coordinators of the Environmental Music Program at Massachusetts General Hospital.
But bringing music to hospital corridors is just a side line for music therapists. The majority of
their time is spent using music to help patients accomplish specific goals, like recovering their
speech after a stroke or reducing the stress of chemotherapy.
Chartrand is a vocalist and graduate of Berklee College of Music. She decided to become a
music therapist when she realized that she could use music to support others just as it had
supported her throughout her life. “The favourite part of my job is seeing how big impact music
can have on someone who isn’t feeling well,” she says.
Music therapy is a burgeoning field. Those who become certified music therapists are
accomplished musicians who have deep knowledge of how music can evoke emotional
responses to relax or stimulate people, or help them heal. They combine this knowledge with
their familiarity with a wide variety of musical styles to find the specific kind that can get you
through a challenging physical rehab session or guide you into meditation. And they can find
that music in your favourite genre, be it electropop or grand opera.
Music therapists know few boundaries. They may play music for you or with you, or even teach
you how to play an instrument. On a given day, Chartrand may be toting a tank drum, a ukulele,
or an iPad and speakers into a patient’s room. “Technology gives us so much access to all
kinds of music that I can find and play almost any kind of music you like,” she says.
A growing body of research attests that that music therapy is more than a nice perk. It can
improve medical outcomes and quality of life in a variety of ways. Here’s a sampling:
Reduces side effects of cancer therapy. Listening to music reduces anxiety associated with
chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It can also quell nausea and vomiting for patients receiving
chemotherapy.
Aids pain relief. Music therapy has been tested in patients ranging from those with intense
acute pain to those with chronic pain from arthritis. Overall, music therapy decreases pain
perception, reduces the amount of pain medication needed, helps relieve depression, and gives
people a sense of better control over their pain.
Improves quality of life for dementia patients. Because the ability to engage with music
remains intact late into the disease process, music therapy can help to recall memories, reduce
agitation, assist communication, and improve physical coordination.
This study will determine how effective Music therapy is to the people/patients who are
struggling in mental problems or health problems. This study will be possible by asking at least
20 – 30 people (different ages) about this case and in order to gain more knowledge and
information we will interview Music therapist or any experts that has enough knowledge about
Music therapy.
The descriptive, experimental, and survey methods of research will be used in this study.
Descriptive method because it’s main concern is to get more information about Music therapy
and how effective it is to the patients. This study is also an experimental because we are going
to compare two patients with the same health problems but different methods of healing: Music
therapy and unknown therapy.
The researcher will also going to use the survey method, to get the point of views of every
people/patients and therapist on what they think about this Music therapy and how effective it is.
In this study we have two 2 kinds of respondents: the people of the survey method and the other
one is the 2 persons who will the researcher going to use as the subject in the experimental
method.
In the survey method, the researcher will going to ask 20-30 people about this topic. It can be a
survey method or impromptu questions about their opinions to Music therapy and how effective
is it.
In the experimental method, we have 2 subjects with the same health problems (it’s necessary
that the subject has a very serious health problem. Headache is enough) but different methods
of healing: unknown therapy and the music therapy. In this method, the researcher will prove
which method of healing is more effective.
Sampling Design
Convenience sampling will be utilized in this research. Since the researcher is a student then the
researcher will going to use students as its subject. The researcher will interview students, teachers and
with the help of the researcher’s teachers if by chance the researcher will interview experts or music
therapist to gain more information. And for the experiment, the researcher will going to use students as
their subjects.

This study is a success. At first, I thought that this study is impossible to investigate because it’s
very wide but with a little help of my friend Mr. Google, Friends, Experts it became possible.
Gathering information about this study is can be difficult because it’s hard to find 20- 30
respondents that will be patient enough to answer all the questions. I experience be ignored by
my respondents especially in the experiment method, many decline my request to be one of my
subject but thank goodness there is 2 people who agreed to be respondents. While we are
doing the experiment, Subject 1 (has headache but her treatment is just taking pain killer
medicine) and Subject 2 (has headache also but her treatment is just listening to relaxing
music). I noticed while we are doing the experiment Subject 1 had recover fast but the
headache come back again but subject 2 had recover 3 minutes late than the subject 1 but it
never come back. So it mean, that hearing relaxing music especially the slow and harmonious
one can relieve headaches or migraines. I’m not saying that medicines are not effective they are
effective but there are a lot of people that when they take medicine it has a side effect on them,
it’s either they will vomit or will have a worse headache. I learn that music therapy is not just
going to see a therapist like that but when you are listening to relaxing music and letting yourself
dive in to the waves of notes, you are undergoing music therapy. The reason why it is called
music therapy because music therapy is used to treat people who has brain problems like
Alzheimer’s, migraines, autism and many more. The effectivity of this study can last for a
thousand generations because I believe that all of us are listening to music and most people are
doing this. Of course, there are a lot of preparations here in this study, first, you must be ready
and you must have enough knowledge or information to share with everybody. Second, the
PowerPoint presentation, there’s no other way of creating visual aids. Third, the questionnaires
for the survey and interviews must be related to your topic and you must choose them wisely.
Fourth, the budget for your study, of course if you’re going to interview a therapist or any
experts it’s important to have a thank you gift or any token. Lastly, the time, it’s important to
prepare your time for this study. It’s wrong that you are just going to interview people without
any schedules and appointments especially the therapist is a busy person you should have an
appointment first before anything. There are a lot of preparations but I am thankful that this
study is a qualified success thanks to all those people who helped in my research.
To improve healing method. This new method will not only heal people
with mental problems but they will also find enjoyment while they are
being healed and to make them feel that they are being loved despite
their condition.
To calm the patients especially the ones who has autism and
Alzheimer’s.
To have a communication to them and for them to build self-confidence
on socializing to someone.
To enhance their communicating skills.
To teach them how to follow simple orders.
Rational:
We will try a new method and that is Music therapy. So that, the
patients especially with a mental disorder and the specials will have
happiness while they are being healed.
We will speak to them by using music. For example, when we want to
say something to them we will say it but the difference is we will put a
beat and a melody.
We will let them touch musical instrument and we will let them to play
instruments with us. So that, their socializing skills will be enhanced.
We will let them to sing with us by giving a specific direction. So that,
their confidence will level up.
