Simplify EMC Symmetrix Storage Management
Simplify EMC Symmetrix Storage Management
Data centers are at a crossroad. It is not a one-to-one relationship between physical resources and
capacity growth. Growth has to be accommodated by virtualizing and sharing resources. As data
centers continue to embrace virtualization, management tools are required to tier, consolidate, and
scale physical resources.
With EMC® Symmetrix® Management Console (SMC), the provisioning of storage resources takes
less time and effort, is simple and easy to accomplish, and maximizes utilization of the physical
resources.
• Reduce the amount of time and effort At a high level, SMC provides the overall storage provisioning functions and also provides the ability
to provision storage and replication in to view, monitor, and report on Symmetrix arrays. It provides an efficient view of all Symmetrix
complex data center environments
resources consolidated in a single console view.
• Manage more storage configurations in
virtual data center environments with
fewer resources
• Simplify day-to-day management with
ease-of-use features
• Forecast and plan system upgrades and
consolidation with automated performance
monitoring and trending
• Reduce total cost of ownership (TCO)
Platform-based Tiering
– Auto-provisioning Groups help provision storage more easily, reducing labor and risk of error,
for consolidated and virtual environments by managing many server-storage links at once. SMC
provides the ability to create Auto-provisioning Groups through the use of wizards.
– Dynamic Cache Partitioning segregates memory resources on a Symmetrix array into as many
as eight partitions for different virtual servers or clusters. Partitions can expand and contract
according to policies in order to maximize cache utilization while isolating workloads among
applications. SMC provides the ability to establish cache partitions, analyze cache partitions in
demonstration mode, and monitor cache partitions.
– Symmetrix Priority Controls help manage multiple application workloads by setting priority
levels for device groups, allowing higher-priority applications to have faster response times than
lower-priority applications. SMC has the ability to provision priority controls.
• Actively monitor storage resource utilization: SMC provides the ability to view the utilization of
drives and pools in an array, as well as the ability to monitor replication and quality of service (QoS)
parameters as IOs and cache are used.
• Ease of Use: Features such as templates, wizards, task menus, and device filters simplify manage-
ment and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) in the virtual data center. SMC wizards streamline the
provisioning process for Auto-provisioning Groups, Virtual LUN technology, and SRDF® replication.
With the wizard capability, the time-to-provision and errors are minimized when provisioning
storage resources.
• Robust Information and System Security: SMC provides multiple levels of secure access to specific
hosts and users. SMC provides role-based user authentication and detailed auditing to protect
critical information from malicious activity. SMC also enables users to manage Symmetrix access
controls that authenticate and restrict host control of Symmetrix devices. SMC supports iSCSI
CHAP secrets and RADIUS server settings to provide additional authentication and authorization
capabilities.
EMC Symmetrix Performance Analyzer (SPA)
EMC Symmetrix Performance Analyzer (SPA) is a graphical performance monitoring and trending tool
that helps in long-term planning and decisions, including system upgrades and consolidation. SPA is
add-on functionality that is launched from the SMC. SPA has the following benefits:
• Adds new intelligence to manage at the application level by providing the ability to monitor
Composite Groups, pools (Data, SNAP and DSE), and masking groups
