CHARACTERISTIC AND PROGNOSTIC FACTORS IN ESOPAGEAL ATRESIA

ABSTRACT
Background : Esophagealatresia refers to a congenitally interrupted esophagus. The incidence is
1:3500 live born infants. There are several classification risk factors however, Waterstonand
Spitz classification are the most common use to predicting successfully treatment in esophageal
atresia patient.
Method : These Research is a descriptive study with retrospective design sudy conducted on
January 2015 – December 2017. Samples where the medical record of patienst with
esophagealatresia in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital.
Result : From 27 cases, there were 15 patients died (55.5%). 9 of 17 (47%) low birth weight and
2 of 2 (100%) very low birth weight patients was died. Based on Gross classification majority of
patients (81.5%) belonged to type C and 18.5% of them belonged to type A. Associated
anomalies were seen in 52% patients, with cardiac anomalies as the most prevalent (32%). 80%
cases with Gross classification type A had the most common associated anomalies. The most
frequent cause of death were Cardiac anomaly (71%), sepsis (43%), and pneumonia (29%).
Based on Waterston classification, survival rate in group A (83%), B (36%), and C (29%). Based
on Spitz classification, survival rate in group I (58%), II (14%), and III (0%).
Summary : Mostly factors that affected the prognostic are low birth weight, cardiac anomaly,
sepsis, and pneumonia. However, other factors will influence the prognostic.
