Problem 1 (10 pts)

A cylindrical tank with a radius of 2-m is filled with oil and water. The water has a density of ρ = 1000
kg/m3 while the oil has a density of ρ = 800 kg/m3 . If the depth of the water is 2.5 m, and the pressure
difference between the top of the oil and the bottom of the water is 80 kPa, determine the depth of the oil, in
m. Assume that gravity is 9.81 m/s2 .
Problem 2 (10 pts)

a) What is the state postulate?

b) What is the difference between an intensive and extensive property?

c) Is volume an extensive or intensive property?

d) Is specific volume an extensive or intensive property?

e) What are the three items which needs to be specified to describe a process?

f) What is held constant during an isobaric process?

g) An adiabatic process indicates what does NOT occur.

h) What must be true about the first and last states of a cycle?
Problem 3 (10 pts)
A Watt (W) is defined as one Joule (J) of energy per second (s).

a) A 4-kW heater is used for 3 hours (h). Determine the amount of energy used, in kWh.

b) A 4-kW heater is used for 3 hours (h). Determine the amount of energy used, in kJ.

c) A power plant can produce 800 MW of power. How much energy, in GJ, is produced in one hour?
