ASSIGNMENT 1.

NS 101: Mathematics-I

Jabalpur

1. Prove that there is no rational number whose square is 12.

2. Verify the following induction

(13 + 23 + ... + n3 ) = (1 + 2 + ...n)2

3. Let A and B be two nonempty subset of R and A ⊆ B. Then show that

inf(B) ≤ inf(A) ≤ sup(A) ≤ sup(B)

4. Determine the boundedness and infimum, supremum of the following

(i) A = { n1 : n ∈ N}
n
(ii)A = { (−1)
n
: n ∈ N}
(iii) The set of integers, rational and real numbers.

5. Find the supremum and infimum of the set

(i) A = { m+n
m
: m, n ∈ N}
(ii)A = { |m|+n
m
: m ∈ Z and n ∈ N}

6. Let A and B be bounded subset of R. Then show that A ∪ B is a bounded subset

of R and show that

sup(A ∪ B) = max{sup(A), sup(B)} and inf(A ∪ B) = min{inf(A), inf(B)}

7. Determine whether the following sets are bounded. If so, determmine their infimum
and supremum.
(i) A = {1 + (−1)n : n ∈ N}
(ii) A = {x ∈ R : x2 + x + 1 ≥ 0}

8. Show that the supremum and infimum of a set, if exists, are unique.

9. Find the supremum of the following set

m
A={ : m, n ∈ N and m < 2n}
n
