The Unananimous Decision of the Ulama for Subh Sadiq and the Beginning of Fasts

‫بسم اهلل الرحمن الرحيم‬

Today on the 16th Sha’ban 1403AH corresponding to the 29th [May] 1983 on Sunday at 10am in a
meeting organised by Jamiatul Ulama UK at the Jami’ Musjid, Harold Street, Bradford there was a
gathering of ‘Ulama. The Chair of the meeting was Mufti Mahmudul Hasan Gangohi ‫ رحمه اهلل‬. [In the
meeting] all the Ulama after a great deal of reflection and thought have come to a consensus that
the methodology that was prevalent of using Nautical Twilight, 12 degrees for Subh Sadiq is
absolutely incorrect.

For those days when Subh Sadiq occurs ie. The sun does go below 18 degrees (which is known as
astronomical twilight) , in these days, this time will be used because in actual fact this is the correct
time for Subh Sadiq. However, those days where the sun does not go below 18 degrees (this varies
according to the latitude of different places, in these days the day when subh sadiq last occurred
should be used for the whole period [Aqrabul Ayyam].

As for the meeting that occurred on 16th Sha’ban 1402 corresponding to June 1982 in Dewsbury
where the different permissible methods [that can be used when 18 degrees does not occur ie.
Nearest day, nearest city, one-seventh and half night] as described by Maulana Muhammad Ya’qub
Isma’il Qasmi in his book. These methods despite all being correct nevertheless the participants of
this meeting have given preference to Aqrabul Ayyam. For this reason, the participants have agreed
to, from today onwards that not only will we follow this and encourage others to follow this but we
will also encourage Ulama who are not present today to follow this methodology.

By the blessings of Allah, all the participants of this gathering have agreed the aforementioned with
good intentions and willingness and the chair of the meeting congratulated the Ulama on their
decision and encouraged them to stay united and one.

NB. In this meeting approximately 70 Ulama and more than 100 responsible members of Masajid
participated. The meeting lasted 6 hours and after the consensus the chair [Mufti Mahmudul Hasan
Gangohi ‫ ]رحمه اهلل‬completed the gathering with du’a.
