In Class Work Part 1: Permutations and Combinations

1. Twent y workers are to be assigned to 20 different jobs, one to each job.

How many different assignments are possible?
2. How many different ways can 8 people be seated in a row if
a. There are no restrict ions on the seat ing arrange ment?
b. Persons A and B must sit next to each other?
c. There are 4 men and 4 women and no 2 men or 2 women can sit next
to each other?
d. There are 5 men and they must sit next to each other?
e. There are 4 married couples and each couple must sit together?
3. In a car factory, robot 1 attaches windows to doors, robots 2 and 3 attach
the doors to cars. If the probabilit y of failure for the robots is as shown,
what is the probabilit y that the factory will not be able to produce cars?

4. You own 6 books: 3 novels, 2 mathemat ics books and 1 chemistry book.
You want to put them on a bookshelf. In how many ways can these books
be arranged (ordered) on the bookshelf if
a. the books can be arranged in any order?
b. the mat hemat ics books must be together and the novels must be
together?
c. the novels must be together, but the other books can be arranged in
any order?
5. A person has 8 friends and will take 5 of them to a football game. How
many choices does he have if:
a. Two of his friends are fight ing and will not go to the game together.
b. Two of his friends are best friends and will only go together.

6. A, B and C will take turns flipping a coin. First A flips then coin, then B,
then C, then A again, B again and C again. The coin is flipped 6 times.
Whoever gets heads first wins, and the game is over. If there is no heads in
6 flips (if all 6 flips land tails), then the game is over and nobody wins.
What is the probabilit y that A wins?

7.
a. If 5 people, including A and B, are randomly arranged in a line,
what is the probabilit y that A and B are next to each other?
b. If 5 people, including A and B, are randomly arranged in a circle,
what is the probabilit y that A and B are next to each other?

8. On rainy days, Joe is late to work with probabilit y 0.3, on nonrainy days
he is late wit h probabilit y 0.1. Wit h probabilit y 0.7 it will rain tomorrow.
a. Find the probabilit y that Joe is early tomorrow.
b. Given that Joe was early today, what is the probabilit y t hat it rained
today?

9. Two factories, A and B, produce radios. Ea ch radio produced in factory A

is defect ive (broken) wit h probabilit y 0.05, each radio produced in factory
B is defect ive wit h probabilit y 0.01. Factory A produces 1.000.000 radios
per year, factory B produces 2.000.000 radios per year. Suppose you
purchase two radios produced by the same factory, but you don't know
which factory. If the first radio that you check is defect ive, then
a. what is the condit ional probabilit y that the radios were made in
factory A?
b. what is the condit ional probabilit y that the radios were made in
factory B?
c. what is the condit ional probabilit y that the second radio is also
defect ive?
