Boating is fun .. We'll show you how.

Greetings Squad:

March was a fun month, particularly for those of us who were able to join the D22
Princess Cruise to Panama. All together we had 15 in our local group, including friends
from Venice. USPS numbered over 140! Members came from as far away as Austin
Texas, as well as my former home town of Patchogue, Long Island. Dawn arranged a spectacular trip, and we all
had a great time. Cruising was quite smooth, despite the fact that two of our ports were experiencing rough
seas and had to be scrubbed from the itinerary. So we went to Belize instead, where we enjoyed activities
from Cave rafting to Zip-lining! We also had an extra sea day, so Debbie and I picked up some extra cash at
the Casino! We had some Squadron celebrations, such as Lt/C Karel Goodrich, P’s second 29th birthday, and P/
C Larry Beverage, SN and Lt Yvonne Beverage, P’s anniversary, (However they were just pretending because
they wanted a free dessert with a candle on it.) Incidentally, Yvonne and Lt Monique Gutierrez, S admitted that
they are siblings, and were only hiding that fact because Yvonne borrowed shoes without asking in 1987. They
have since reconciled. (This of course is a fabrication.)

Still to come in March, though past for you dear readers, is the DeSoto Seafood Fest, which is being managed
by Lt Jim Gieges, S, as well as to back to back C. & R.’s to Tarpon Springs and Caladesi Island. We can’t wait to
hear about those trips, and I hope you are experiencing favorable weather, and great times! So far, the out-
look is for fair skies, so I hope you all brought enough sunscreen!

Also on the Agenda is the D22 Spring Conference, which will be covered in next month’s Helm Station.

Finally, on 07 Apr 2017, we will be back on the Green Bridge for the Just For Girls fishing outing. Lt Ed Van
Stedum, S is handling that effort; so if you can join in, please contact him if you haven’t already, I’ll see you
there!

And please note, on 29 Apr 2017 , we will present America’s Boating Course, in Palmetto; so if you know someone
who hasn’t had the training, spread the word!

Remember to sail with confidence, because you are prepared.

Lt/C Matt Braatz, AP ao@manatee-squadron.org

It’s hard to believe that we are in April already. The District Cruise is over, and I understand that everyone
had a good time…...except for the weather (windy) which could have been a little bit better. We had two Vessel
Safety checks in March, one being at the Bradenton Yacht Club with the other at Tidewater Preserve (marina).
Sorry to say we had 9 people signed up at the Yacht Club but only one person came. We were able to get one
more boater who was at the dock and requested a Vessel Safety Check. We will follow up to see if the people
that did not show up would still like to have the check done. At the Tidewater Preserve 20 boats were signed
up which was very well organized. We had 3 Vessel Safety Examiners along with a number of VSE (trainees)
getting their 5 inspections done to fulfill the requirements to become a Certified VSE. Great weather and
thanks to everyone who participated.

By the time this newsletter comes out the trip to Tarpon Springs and Caladesi will be over as well as the Polo
Match at Sarasota and the Hernando De Soto Heritage Festival. In April, the Port Tampa Harbor Tour on 20
Apr 2017 was canceled. Instead, arrangements have been made for a luncheon at the Columbia Restaurant in
Ybor City at 1130. Please sign up at the next meeting. On 07 May 2017 at 1130, we will be having the Squad-
ron’s annual Anniversary Party which will be held at the Blu Mangrove Grill (located next to the Riviera Dunes
Marina).
Have a great month of safe boating!

The Secretary Department is in need of an assistant to cover the general meeting minutes for
the months of May and September when Karel is out of town. It requires taping the meeting
and typing up the minutes. It only takes a few hours per month and a template is easily
used. If you will be at the meeting anyway why not volunteer to help in this small way. The sal-
ary is unbelievable!!!

Lt/C Bob Kelly, SN seo@manatee-squadron.org

Good news from P/C Charlie Brunner, SN. Marine Electrical, an elective course, test scores for four students are
in, and congratulations are in order for: Dean May, S, Michael McClintic, AP, Lt John Walsh, N, Lt Verne Walsh,
AP. All scores were very high, so our squadron is blessed with smart members and a very capable instructor.
Good job done by all!

Status of our other courses:

~~Advance Pilot: Due to schedule conflicts, the class has been rescheduled for the fall.

~~Junior Navigation: starts on 26 Mar 2017 with only an overview and, with the use of the textbook, starts
on 05 Apr 2017.

~~Engine Maintenance: begins on 29 Mar 2017.

~~Seamanship: begins on 03 Apr 2017.

~~Instructor Development: starts on 27 Mar 2017.

It isn't too late to sign up for the above five courses. You may have to share a book for a week or two, but you
can still join these classes. If you wish to do so, please call me at 962-6893.

~~Weather: about half way through their text. Everyone has a good time in weather; you get to ask why is the
sky blue and no one laughs!

~~Piloting, Sail and Cruise Planning will be conducted this fall.

Our efforts to extend America's Boating Course into Manatee County High Schools did not work out. Feedback
suggested the reason was 17 and 18 year olds already have their licenses. Since you must be certified at age 14,
they have had a license for 3 or 4 years. We are now back at the School Board who is sending our flyer out to all
Middle Schools to measure interest of faculty and 14 year old plus students; time will tell.

Our squadron has or had (depending when you read this article) two members make presentations at the District
22 Spring Conference. You may have read this article on-line and still have time to join us on Saturday 4/1/17 to
hear 1/ Lt Bill Spencer, SN present “Skipper Saver” and P/Lt/C Mike Stewart, SN present “Path to SN”. We
have a great time at these Roundtables, lunch and etc. Carpooling is the favorite transportation--- please join us
if you can.

While in Panama, a group of us joined a tour to visit the Embrera Indians. ; local people who live off the land,
in small villages of thatched huts, and with minimum of modern conveniences. We were met at a launch point
by tribespeople in their gas powered dugout canoes, for the journey upriver to their village. It was a great
outing, a highlight of the trip.

11 Mar 2017~~Kayaking Adventure

On the morning of 11 Mar 2017, eight intrepid kayakers pushed away from the main launch area at the Robinson
Preserve. While paddling south toward the Palma Sola Bay, we encountered five northbound M.S.P.S. kayakers
(one of them canine, but nonetheless a member of our M.S.P.S. family). After a brief impromptu raft up, both
parties continued on their respective paths. It was a beautiful day for a leisurely paddle, and our group saw sev-
eral types of herons and a low flying bald eagle on our five mile round trip.

Vessel Safety Checks
12 Mar 2017~~Bradenton Yacht Club
18 Mar 2017~~Tidewater Preserve

P/C Tom Brown P, Lt/C Matt Braatz P, P/C George Nartsissov AP, Chip Downing
S and Lt Don Hanzlik S participated in a Vessel Safety Check event at Braden-
ton Yacht Club on Sunday, 12 Mar 2017. Nine vessels signed up in advance.
However only one owner was present so the day did not go quite as planned.
Our group was able to encourage another owner who was on site to have his
boat inspected for a total of two for the day. Two BYC members later con-
tacted me to apologize for not being able to attend and did reschedule to have
their Vessel Safety Checks completed.

Thanks!

Tidewater Preserve VSC 2017

Lt Jim Gieges, S
The good folks at Tidewater Preserve on the Manatee River East have done it again showing what a great boating
community they are. In the past several years Tidewater Preserve has held a one day event attended by Tidewat-
er homeowners and the MSPS along with several boat minded businesses to encourage the Tidewater homeowners
to get involved in boating, taking the ABC course, joining the MSPS with introductions to all things boating. We
were privy to a great day of listening to live music, enjoying good food, ABC class sign up and boat inspections.
This year the event was held a little differently and on separate dates. On Saturday 18 Mar 2017 Dock Master,
Captain John Van Nordstrand and his wife Noel of Tidewater Preserve coordinated homeowners, times and places
to make for a focused day of VSC inspections. Three MSPS Inspectors along with four “newbies” needing five
inspections under their belt were able to inspect 19 boats between 0900 and 1400. Noel deserves all of the cred-
it in the world for spread sheeting two inspections at their marina and a floater who inspected at owners’
homes…… every half hour. I, along with P/C Tom Brown, P and P/C Gary Mink, P with the newbies in tow cranked
out the day and did not miss a lick. Good work guys! The boat owners were well prepared and had everything on
the checklist laid out and ready for our inspection. It was great to knock out 19 inspections and know we made a
positive impact on safe boating in our community.
We owe a great deal of thanks to the Tidewater Preserve Marnier Club for inviting the MSPS to be involved with
their efforts as a focused boating community.

Hernando De Soto Heritage Festival

25-26 Mar 2017
Lt Jim Gieges, S

As in past years, the De Soto Festival was held at Sutton Park in Palmetto, FL and
went off extremely well. This years’ festival offered great weather, fair crowds
and plenty of entertainment. Our MSPS was able to man our booth with good suc-
cess including: three VCS signed up, several solid enquiries into joining the MSPS
and 8 individuals signed up for the spring and fall ABC class. I want to thank all of
the individuals who signed on for booth duty as well as assisting with set up and take down; your time and sup-
port were greatly appreciated. Many thanks to the folks who manage the De Soto Festival in finding a great
space for our organization at no cost. Let’s do it again next year!

Spring Getaway
Caladesi Island
P/C Charlie Brunner, SN

Our annual trip to Caladesi Island State Park was another excellent boating event. The turnout was good with
Beverage’s Aboard, Bucket List, Carpe Diem, Eisvogel, Hafa Adai, Judith Ann, Nana Papa III, Q’s Cabin, and Sun-
shine OMS attending. Our weather situation worked out with wind causing a problem during one Docktail and the
bugs stayed away (for the most part).
The traditional men’s breakfast and Saturday cookout came off without a hitch and Craft time with Alice Brun-
ner, P was a fun event with everyone showing off their decorated tiles at the end.
Special thanks to Don Tress, P and P/C Carl Nyman, JN for organizing this event.

Judith Ann hosts the weather briefing with P/C Charlie Brunner SN, P/C Gary Mink, P, Lt Charlie Bigham, SN,
P/Lt/C Mike Stewart, SN, P/C Carl Nyman, JN, Don Tress P, and Lt Diana Nyman, P in attendance.

The 04 Mar 2017 the C & R was held at Mattison's City Grille in Bradenton. A good time was had by 39 members.
The highlight of the event was seeing Kathy Gee who sustained several injuries in an auto accident recently. She
is amazing!

The Left Coast Amateur Fishing Report

March 2017

Lt Jim Gieges, S

In the past week Lynne & I have gone from the sliders open all day to battling the afternoon temperatures
with the air conditioner on. Don’t get me wrong, the end of spring and the dog days of summer are my time of
the year; I love hot weather. Who can complain when we are not shoveling snow and looking like the Pillsbury
Doughboy with all those winter clothes stacked on us. Compared to previous winters this one was mild and we
were able to find more time on the water in between the heavy bouts of wind. And the bait fish did “kinda
sorta” hang around; I did find some on occasion.

This February and March were banner months for sheepshead; there were plenty and quite easy to find. Alt-
hough March is drawing to a close sheepshead are still available. The snook are moving from their winter
holes and becoming available. I haven’t seen it but my sources tell me redfish are schooling up…..send me in
coach! If you are looking for a good spot to take the grandkids, try the shoreline around Rattlesnake Key on
the bay side where there is no telling what will hit your bait. This might be the year to slow troll big lures for
grouper; let me know how you did.

Offshore on the three and seven mile reefs will get better as the spring comes to a close and the winds al-
lows us to motor farther offshore. Last week Lynne & I ran out to the three mile north and did a lot of wish-
ing. Man oh man, was I ready for some Cobia but we did not find any. The bottom line is the weather is be-
coming more summer like, the water temps are hitting 70+ and moving up daily. I’m tired of cleaning the boat,
fixing the fishing equipment and hearing the charter guys tell me how great it is. I’m ready to fill the well

Upcoming Event Information

Just for Girls Fishing

On 07 Apr 2017 our squadron will host another “Just for Girls” fishing outing on the Green Bridge in Palmetto. The girls
must earn the privilege to attend this adventure by exemplary behavior in both academics and deport-
ment during many weeks prior to the event. Only about 50% of students at the school earn this outing.
It carries a great importance to them and they appreciate the opportunity.
Sign-up sheets will be available.

Please keep our service men and women in your thoughts and prayers. We thank them for their
service, both past and present.

Helmsman: A Helmsman is “one who steers the ship”. The Helm Station is our monthly
newsletter, and is one of the ways we communicate with our members and helps us steer our
organization. It is also one of our largest expenses. To help us defray the cost of publishing
this newsletter, we established the Helmsman Program.
You can become a Helmsman for The Helm Station by contributing $10 in honor of
the month of your birthday. We will publish your name on The Helmsman Page and recognize
your birthday during your birth month. Sign up in January to have your support listed
throughout the year.
If you paid to join the Helmsman Page ($10/year) you are also eligible for a free
classified ad in two consecutive issues. What a deal! Contact the editor to take advantage
of this opportunity to clean out the old boat locker.
