    THEORY DIAGNOSTIC EXAM for entering MMs and DMAs

    (Exceptions are: MM in Music Theory, Musicology, Music Ed, and Jazz Studies)

    Date: Monday, September 24, 2018


    Time: 1:00PM – 3:00PM
    Location: Regenstein MCR

    CONTENT: areas to be tested include *

    Binary, ternary, variation and sonata forms


    Fugal construction and devices
    Melodic and harmonic sequences
    4-part chorale-style voice leading (Roman numerals and figured bass)
    Modulation (direct, common tone, chromatic and enharmonic)
    Secondary and chromatic harmony and cadence types

    RECOMMENDED REVIEW: The following texts contain material for reviewing the above topics

    Green, Form in Tonal Music: An Introduction to Analysis, 2nd edition
    Koska, Tonal Harmony

    * DMA students may be asked to provide additional information on more complex topics such as
