1) Explain the function of pump in a system.

[2]
The pump draws in the hydraulic fluid and drives it out into a system of lines. Thus it
converts the mechanical energy in a drive unit into hydraulic energy (pressure energy).
2) List three characteristics of a hydraulic pump. [3]
The hydraulic pumps are characterized by its:
i. flow rate capacity,
ii. power consumption,
iii. drive speed,
iv. pressure delivered at the outlet and
v. efficiency of the pump.

3) Explain the two basic types of pumps: non positive displacement pump, positive
displacement pump, List their uses. [5]
i. Non positive displacement- In these pumps the fluid is pressurized by the rotation of
the propeller and the fluid pressure is proportional to the rotor speed. These pumps
cannot withstand high pressures and generally used for low-pressure and high-volume
flow applications.
ii. Positive displacement- These pumps deliver a constant volume of fluid in a cycle. The
discharge quantity per revolution is fixed in these pumps and they produce fluid flow
proportional to their displacement and rotor speed. These pumps are used in most of
the industrial fluid power applications.

4) List the types of positive displacement pumps. [3]

Important positive displacement pumps are gears pumps, vane pumps and piston pumps.
5) Explain with a sketch the working principle of external gear pump.

The external gear pump consists of externally meshed two gears housed in a pump case as
shown in the figure. One of the gears is coupled with a prime mover and is called as driving
gear and another is called as driven gear. The rotating gear carries the fluid from the tank to
the outlet pipe.
6) The first line of protection would be a ______c______ on the pump outlet.
a) Directional control valve
b) Ball valve
c) Pressure relief valve
d) Flow control valve
7) Identify which picture is a radial piston pump. __a___
(a) (b)

(c) (d)
