Consequently, the downward movement of the hand (half of a quarter- note) is counting one single eighth-note, and the upward movement is counting the following written single eighth-note (or eighth-note-rest). Thus, in performance, the quarter-note is divided in two equal parts (two eighth-notes). The small arrows indicate the travel of the hand.
