It is very easy to knit being entirely in stocking stitch with ribbed borders. The charming sprays of clematis look very rich embroidered in wool and silk, and the original colour scheme of hyacinth blue for the bolero with shades of purple and green for the | sprays of clematis was particularly lovely and 4 effective. The bolero can, of course, be made and worn equally well without the embroidery. MATERIALS: 4 ozs. of W.B. " Melody" Knitting, 3-ply; one pair each of No. 9 and No. 12 knitting * needles ; one pair of shoulder pads; and embroider wouls aid “iIKs inthe following colours:— Embroidery Wools: 2 skeins dark mauve, I skein dark green, and | skein medium green. Embroidery Silks: | skein each in dark mauve, = light mauve, cream, very pale green, light green, medium green, and dark green. TENSION: 7 sts. to | inch in width, and 9 rows to | inch in depth, measured over the stocking stitch (after pressing). MEASUREMENTS: After pressing, bolero mea- sures 34 inches all round underarms, but as the front edges are worn open, it will fit up to a 36*inch _ bust size. Length from lower edge to back neck, 44 inches. Measurements include ribbed borders, ABBREVIATIONS: K., knit; p., purl; st., Stitch; sts., stitches; rep.. repeat; tog., together: stst., stocking stitch; sl, slip; inc., increase; dec., decrease. NOTE: To inc. | st., knit into the front and back of the same st. before slipping it off left-hand needle. To dec. | st., knit 2 sts. tog. THE BACK With No. 9 needles, cast on 100 sts. and work in st.st. (I row k., | row p. alternately) for 4 rows. Now inc. |'st. at both ends of the next row, and every 4th row after, until sts. number 120. Proceed without inc. until work measures 6 inches, finishing with a p. row. To shape the armholes, cast off 8 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows and 4 sts, at the beginning of the following 2 rows, then dec. | st. at both ends of the next three alternate rows (90 sts.). Proceed without further shaping until armholes are 63 Inches deep, measured on straight from Ist armhole row, ending with 2 p. row. Now shape the shoulders thus : Next row: K. 36, cast off the next 18 sts., k. 30, turn, and sii, then p. the rest of these 30 sts.** Now working only on this second set of sts., proceed thus, (always slipping first st. of each p. row) Ist row: K. 24, turn and p. to end. 3rd rot K. 18, turn ard p. to end. Sth row: K, 12, turn. and p. to-end> Teh row? K. 6, turn and p. to end. Cast oii all 36 sts. ** Join wool to the inner (neck) end of the othe: set of 36 sts. Next row: P. 30, turn and k. to end, Now work as first shoulder from ** to **, but read p. for every k. and vice versa. THE RIGHT FRONT With No. 9 needles, cast on 34 sts. and work 2 rows in st.st. Proceed in st.st. and shape the front edge by casting on 2 sts. at the beginning of the next row, then at the same edge of every alternate row until there are 50 sts. Now inc I st. at the same edge on the next 2 alternate rows (52 sts.). Proceed without further inc until the work measures 6 inches from start, finishing at straight (ide) edge. Shape the armhole by casting off 8 sts. at the beginning of the next row, and 4 sts. at the same edge on the following alternate row, then dec I st. at the armhole edge on every alternate row. until 36 sts. remain. Proceed without further dec. until the armhole measures 62 inches deep on the straight, measured from first armhole row, and finishing ac front edge. Now shape the shoulder as follows, (slipping first st. of each p. row) : Ist row: K. 30, turn and p. to end. 3rd row: K. 24, turn and p. to end, Sth row: K. 18, turn and p. to end, 7th row: K. 12, turn and p. to end. 9th row: K. 6, turn and p. to end.
