Augustus and the Foundation of the

Principate
A critical study of the career of Augustus between 44 BC and
AD 14.

The topic requires study in the areas of

history and politics

literature

society and values.

The synoptic assessment will draw together knowledge,


understanding and skills in these three areas. Candidates will
be expected to link understanding of the sources and
contemporary Roman values to a comparative analysis and
evaluation of a range of aspects of Augustus' career.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate knowledge,


understanding and the ability to make a reasoned evaluation of

 his building programme and other measures to improve
life in the city of Rome
 reasons for, details and significance of his social
legislation and religious policy
 foreign policy, the consolidation of the empire and the Pax
Romana
 arrangements for the administration of Italy and the
provinces
 the imperial family and issues relating to the succession
 the nature of the evidence and its interpretation
