5. Instructional Objective:
Students will know why we have and follow rules and be able to identify if a rule is
to keep us safe, maintain order, or prevent conflict.

6. Instructional Procedures:
Prompt students to recall why we have rules. Enter into a discussion about how we
have to follow rules everywhere we go, but today we’re going to focus on rules we
follow at home and at school. Continue discussion with a read aloud of “Know and
Follow Rules”. After the book remind students that we have rules we have to follow
for safety, order, and preventing conflict. Ask students to recall what safety, order,
and preventing conflict mean. Develop an anchor chart with Safety, Order, and
Conflict at the top. Allow students to come up and attach a rule to the column they
think it fits into. Introduce and explain the We Obey Rules worksheet and have
student complete them individually at their seats. Next, students will be given
materials and instructions on creating a Rules Rule activity. Students will continue
working individually and teacher will conference with students.

7. Assessment:
We Obey Rules and Rules Rule worksheets to check for understanding.

8. Differentiated Instruction:
Spend time one on one with ESL students to help them identify the pictures that go with
the words. For gifted students, have them continue to write additional rules down in
addition to the rules pictured on the worksheet.
