Painting is the application of paint,

pigment, color or other medium to a


surface.
Pigments are vegetable or mineral
extracts which make up the coloring matter
of paint. The prepared pigment is mixed
with the vehicle which is a liquid part.
In art, the term painting describes both
act and the result of action.
Functions of Painting
- displayed in museums because of their
historical value.
- symbolize present situations.
- modern paintings are mostly used for
office and home decorations
- bring a different effect on atmosphere of
the room.
-The perfect paintings are those that
resonate out heart, mind and emotions
once we see them.
Painting Media
A paints medium refers to what carries a
paint’s pigments, and is also called a
“vehicle” or a “base”. A medium can be
mixed with solvents, pigments, and other
substance.
Elements of Painting
1. Acrylic paint – synthetic paint, with
pigments dispersed in synthetic vehicle
made from polymerized acrylic acid esters.
2. Encaustic- medium, process of painting
with molten wax, resin and pigments.
3. Fresco- painting on plaster, either dry or
wet.
4. Gouache- heavy, opaque watercolor
paint, sometimes called body color.
5. Magna paint- permanent pigments
ground in an acrylic resin with solvents and
plasticizer.
6. Oil paint- slow drying paint when
pigments are mixed with an oil, linseed oil
being most traditional.
7. Pastel – in the form of stick, consisting of
pure powdered pigment and a binder.
8. Tempera or poster color – paint ad
process involving an emulsion of oil and
water.
9. Water color- any paint that uses water as
solvent.
