GENRE/ AUDIENCE / PURPOSE

The two essays use the approach in terms of type or genre of essay is informal.
Informal essay because the authors use their personal experiences in the essay. Both
of the essays used a form of narrative essay as if they are telling a story as the essay
began until the end. Both of the authors intended audience are the society and oneself.
Society: to affiliate the society that they have been an antagonist for a long time.
Oneself: in a sense that there a psychological approach happening in the mind of an
individual asking himself or herself about the issue. The work of art of both the authors
is to have courage of doing what is right. A message to the society or for all as well that
discrimination is a virus that already existed long before each and every one is born. To
inform people who have been downgraded that they are an inspiration to all in still
having faith, hope and positivity in life despite the thorny events that already happens.
SUBJECT/POV/MOOD&TONE
They have the same strong personality. Sarah Harvard embraced who she really
was and up lift more her religion, this time there is no hiding and no secrets about her
personality. On the other hand, Alex Tizon did the same thing; he revealed his true story
because it is the right thing to do. They have the same point of view which is fight for
what is right and what you believed. It is quiet dramatic and at the same time they have
both experienced being criticized by the people around them by knowing their true story.
STYLE/THEME/CULTURAL CONNECTIONS

The two essays are written progressively leading to a revelation. The way I
understood these essays is like a confession, a balancing act of hatred for the worst
parts of self/family /culture/immigration and love. Both essays have the theme about
individual and society and both essay don’t have the freedom. Both essays talks about
our society being full of criticisms, one can be criticized just by being poor, thus leading
them to believe that because you are poor you have no choice but to follow orders or do
things that would please the society. Both cultures are connected this way.
