Reliability and Validity Studies of The Sport Spectator Agression and Violence Scale*
(SSAVS)
Özet
Abstract. The aim of the present study was to develop and examine the reliability and the
validity of the Sport Spectator Agression and Violence Scale (SSAVS). SSAVS is
administered to 244 students from Gazi University Department of Physical Education and
Sports. Along with SSAVS, Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) is also administered in order to
assess the questionnaire’s validity. The internal consistency, test-retest reliability and validity
of the questionnaire are subsequently evaluated. Based on the factor analysis, 21 items of the
questionnaire factored into tree subdimentions which are cognitive, affective and behavioral
agression. Relationship between SSAVS and AQ also examined to determine the structural
validity of the scale. Results support the structural validity of the scale. Findings demonstrate
that SSAVS is a reliable and valid instrument to measure aggression.

Giriş
Günümüzde spor özellikle futbol, çok büyük kitleleri etkisi altına almıştır. Fakat

Ölçek, alt ölçeklerin her birinin
arası 58 normal, 111 ve üzeri yüksek saldırganlık düzeyine işaret eder (Buss ve Warren, 2000;
Can, 2002).
anlamlı bulunmuştur (Can, 2002).
Uygulama
Zaman(1), “Nadiren” (2), “Ara Sıra” (3), “Sıklıkla” (4), “Her zaman” (5) biçiminde beşli

Introduction
Today sports, especially football, influence and attract very large spectators. But the crowd of
people that fill the turbines may generate very serious problems. In recent years, supporters of
Turkish football clubs have experienced violence and aggression during national and
international competitions that even cause deaths (Dunning, Murphy & Williams, 1988: 246-
249).
Social psychology examines the sport spectators as "group" and describes the “group” as
“individuals acting in community together in order to meet the specific needs" (Mavili, 1997:
5). Acet (2001: 29) describes the spectator as "individual who watches a sport competition.”
The spectator, in the psychology of holding a collective identity and supporting a team,
feels the pleasure of victory or the grief of defeat deeply. Because of these positive and
negative feelings, the spectator experiences contradictory emotions such as trust, pleasure,
grudge and greed. In today's modern society, sports have become one of the most important
and most effective social and cultural institutions that wide spectators were attended (Acet,
2001: 29-31). Crowds or individuals who display aggression and violence during or after the
competitions are one of the unwanted behaviors. Sporting events can turn into an environment
which undesirable incidents take place particularly with the effect of various external factors
and disappearance of the personalities in the crowd (Karagözoğlu & Ay, 1997: 165-173).
Cognitive theories and models emphasize that the aggressive behavior is a result of anger
and aggressive thoughts are gained from learning and growth process of human beings
(Amodei & Scott, 2002: 511-526). This theory asserts that there is an indispensable link
among thoughts, emotions and behaviors of people (Tang, 2001: 228). Generally cognitive
researchers use sports, sports records, sport teams and spectators for foresight tests about
aggression and violence. However, a small number of researchers have examined the role of
cognitive factors in violent behaviors of spectators (Russell, 2004: 353–378).
James and Lang and Cannon-Bard who conduct researches on emotions express that the
emotions occurred inside the individuals emerge from stimulants in their environments. For
instance, an individual feels angry or nervous whenever he or she witness an incident that
creates anger or fear (Morris, 2002). These emotions effect individuals’ perception of their
environment, in what way they process the information, what they think and how they react
when they face an event. (Crick & Dodge, 1994). Garnefski, Kraaij Kraaij & Spinhoven
(2001), argue that individuals develop cognitive strategies before they give emotional
reactions to any kind of situation or event.
Behavioral approach claims that studying the observable and measurable behaviors of
individuals is the only scientific method in psychology. According to this view, introspection,
which can’t be observed by any other person, is subjective, because it includes thoughts and
feelings. However, behavioral method is objective because it studies behaviors that can be
observed by anyone. This theory defines aggression as “any kind of behavior that hurt or can
be hurt an individual.” (Freedman, Sears & Carlsmith, 1998: 235). According to this
understanding, the relationship among type, intensity and repetition of aggressive behavior is
important.
Aggressive and violent behaviors among sports spectators have been an important problem
in the world and also in Turkey for many years. For that reason, dimensions of the aggression
of sports spectators must be analyzed in different ways. Some studies have been conducted on
this issue. However, a scale that measures the aggression of sports spectator in a
multidimensional and comprehensive way is needed. There isn’t any scale that meets these
criteria in Turkey. As a result, generating a SSAVS and testing its validity and reliability
would be an important study.
8
In order to create scale items with the light of these information 63 students from Gazi
University, BESYO were requested to write an essay based on the 6 questions including their
opinions about spectator agression and violence in sports, possible elements triggering these
behaviours, emotion status and what can be done regarding these emotion status. By
examining the content of the expressions in essays 74 items were created including
spectator’s opinions, emotions, and behaviours related to agression and violence, The scale is
5 point Likert-type Scale, and response options are as follows: "Never” (1), "Seldom” (2),
"Occasionally"(3), "Often" (4), "Always" (5). Secialist's opinion were asked so as to
determine the final version of the scale.
Specialists were requested to give feedback including the clarity of items, use of language,
to what extent items reflect the purpose of the scale, an so on. Necessary corrections in line
with the suggestions were made and the final version of the scale, which has 42 items, were
utilized.
Participants were informed about the research. Scale was administered to students
studying in the related major during and after the course hours and lasted about 25
minutes. Data were collected in April, May, and June of 2013. Data were analysed using
SPSS 16.0 package. As a result of the analysis of the scale 21 items were designated as the
final version of the scale and this scale was applied to the spectators who were involved in
related events.
Results
The internal consistencies of all the scale according to the scale structure was investigated by
looking at the Cronbach Alpha levels. The test-retest reliability of SSAVS and its relationship
with other scales were analyzed with two-way Pearson correlation analysis. The structure
factor of scale with Explanatory factor analysis was evaluated by doing principle component
analysis and Varimax. The factors those eigen values are above 1 and the items those factor
loadings are above 0.64 were taken into account.
Factor Structure or Factor Analysis
Factor Analysis was conducted for the factor structure of SSAVS. As a result of principle
component analysis and varimax with explanatory factor analysis, three factors
factors with eigenvalues greater than 1 were found which were explaining 69.5% of the total
variance. These factors were named as cognitive, emotional and behavioral aggression. The
resulting factors and factor loadings are given in table 1.

Test-retest reliability
The scale was implemented to 77 students from Gazi University Physical Education 3 weeks
after from its first implementation. Pearson's correlation coefficients between pretest and
posttest scores were calculated and found to be significant. Determned coefficients are as
follows: cognitive aggression .71; emotional aggression .78; behavioral aggression .62. and
total aggression score .76. They were significant correlations (p <0.01).
Split-half reliability coefficients (Spearman-Brown) ranged between .72 and .92: Cognitive
aggression r=.87; behavioral aggression r=.89; emotional aggression r=.72 and total
aggression r= 92.
Validity
The data were obtained by applying both the (SSAVS) scale and Aggression Questionnaire
(AQ) to 167 students to assess the construct validity of scale. The correlation coefficient
between SSAVS and AQ is .41 (p <0.01). The correlation coefficients between SSAVS
subscales (Cognitive, emotional, behavioral aggression) and AQ are respectively .35, .37 and
.45. All values are significant (p <0.01).
Discussion
This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of SSAVS. Reliability analysis of
SSAVS has showed high internal consistency. This indicates that the scale is reliable with all
the dimensions. When internal consistencies of similar scales "Aggression Questionnaire"
(Can, 2002) the total measurement .91; physical aggression.82; verbal aggression .60; indirect
aggression .54 and "Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire" (Buss & Perry, 1992), internal
consistencies of the study were found respectively physical aggression .85; verbal aggression
.72; anger .83; hostility .77 and total aggression .89. Madran (2013) determined also physical
aggression .78; verbal aggression .48; anger .76, hostility .71 and total aggression .85) were
examined, internal consistency coefficients were uncovered to be at a lower level.
The reliability coefficients of test-retest were determined to be high. These results together
reveal the reliable values despite exceeding 3 weeks.
The result of the factor analysis revealed that the scale was consists of three factors. These
three factors represent the three stages of aggression. Aggression in the literature has been
expressed to include cognitive, behavioral and emotional levels. Therefore the factors were
evaluated to be consistent with the theoretical framework in a realistic manner.
The major limitation of this study is its generalizability. Researchers may conduct further
studies with larger sample or with a sample of participants outside the university students.
Despite all the limitations of this study, it revealed that the scale is valid and reliabiliable. It is
expected to meet the expectations related to the gap in the literature.
