This report aims to present the current state of Parque Pinheiro in Araraquara, its history

and available venues. Additionally, it will present recommendation to improve this well-
known park in the area.

The importance
This 35-year-old park was originally thought to revitalize a poor area and also to counter
balance the construction of a state prison in the region. The project at the time faced a
massive backlash once critics argued that the park would never be used by the public.
They were proved wrong when the project was delivered, and the park became home
of a local art festival and held some regional sport events.

How it is
There are many venues and structures available and ready to be used. The centre piece
of the park is its crystalline lake. By the lake, there is a boardwalk which holds a stage
area for live performances. Around the lake, tourists and local people can count on a
5km gravel track, surrounded by native trees, such as Yellow and White Ipês. In one
side of the lake there is a lane of palm trees. Public restrooms and barbecue booths are
installed through the park. Football fields, tennis and basketball courts are also available.
Unfortunately, in recent years, less and less money has been directed to the park due
to the economic crisis faced locally. It can be seen and felt by the old layer of paint on
the walls, visible power cables, questionable cleanness, tall lawn grass. No internet
available. Needless to say, the park doesn't draw as much attention as in the past.

Make it relevant to the 21st century

It is crucial to bring new life to the park to submit it to renovation. Perhaps a private-
public initiative could diminish costs. In general, people need a purpose to be in and go
to a place, therefore, there might also been necessary a new policy regarding the way
the park is managed to make it more relevant when it comes to sports and arts.
People are connected 24-7. It might be more user friendly if some hotspots were
available. That would be appealing to youngers.

Provided these recommendations are taken into consideration we might face a new era
at Pinheiros.
