News Story 2.
Leaguetown high school will have a disciplinary hearing due to sophomore Stacy Carol’s
lip-piercing on April 10.
‘The piercing is part of Stacy’s religion” Carol’s mother, Lareina Carol, said. “She wants
to stand up for herself and for that, I am proud.”
A while back, Stacy got suspended for three days for not taking off her lip-piercing.
Since Stacy returned to school still wearing her lip-piercing she has been in ISS (In School
Suspension) for the past nine days.
“Together, we ended up making a plan that was appropriate for our district,”
superintendent Parker Gordon said. “Facial jewelry did not make the cut.”
The dress code also does not allow hats and any type of headwear, but two Muslim
students have exemptions so they can wear their hijabs.
“I don’t think you can compare the Muslim religion to the Church of Body
Modification,” junior Amina Shakuri said. “We have a rich/long history.”
Stacy and her mother belong to the Church of Body Modification. This type of religion
practices ancient and body modifications rights. She said her First Amendment right to exercise
religion is being violated.
‘We don’t worship a tattooed god or anything like that,” Stacy said. “Through body
modifications, we can change how we see ourselves and the world around us.”
The local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union agreed to defend Carol and if
she loses then they would pursue the issue in court.
‘I don’t understand why the district won’t drop this,” Stacy said.“I just want to get back
to class.”
