Sophomore, Stacy Carol, has been suspended for not removing her lip piercing which is
against school dress code. On April 10, the school will conduct a disciplinary hearing to remove
Carol to an alternative school if she does not remove her piercing.
We have a dress code to have order and discipline in our schools, superintendent
Parker Gordon said. We also want our students to understand expectations in dress.
Employers have dress codes. We are modeling the business world with our expectations.
Carol and her mother belong to the Church of Body Modification, and Carol believes her
First Amendment right to exercise religion is being violated.
My mother and I joined the church over the winter break, said Carol. Through body
modification, we can change how we see ourselves and the world around us. You choose how
you want to express your faith. I dont understand why the district wont drop this.
The local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union agreed to defend Carol at her
discipline hearing and said if she lost, it would pursue the issue in court.
Stacy has a solid case, ACLU lawyer Sonia Stephens said. It is in the best interest of
the school district to allow her a religious exemption.
