Student Suspended Over Lip Piercing Dispute

Stacy Carol, a sophomore, has been suspended for not removing her lip piercing which violates the school's dress code. The school will hold a disciplinary hearing on April 10th to potentially move Carol to an alternative school. While the superintendent believes dress codes model professional expectations, Carol and her mother claim their religious freedom is being violated as members of the Church of Body Modification where body modification is part of their faith expression. The ACLU agreed to defend Carol at her hearing and may pursue the issue in court, believing Carol has a solid religious exemption case.
