Below is a short introduction to the draft Job profile of the Nursing, Professions Supplementary to Medicine and Para Medical categories. During the training period all the trainees will be paid an allowance as per Public Administration Circular No: 03/2016 (Seetion V). Nursing Officer Nursing is a healthcare profession that involves care for patients in a wide variety of healtheare institutional settings such as hospitals (medical, surgical, maternal and child care, critical care, psychiatry, infection control, health promotion, quality management etc.), preventive care institutions (public health nursing), academic institutions (principals and tutors) etc... Major areas of responsibility are; — Helping a patient to carry out the therapeutic plan initiated by the doctor. — Observing and evaluating the patient’s responses — Providing physical care and emotional support for the sick and disabled — Planning and teaching in relation to restoration, promotion of health and prevention of disease — Helping and receiving help from other members of the health team to plan and carry out a total programme of care for the individual, family and the society. The training of nurses in the Ministry of Health is conducted in 16 Nurses Training School which are located throughout the Sri Lanka.The training programme is conducted in English Medium.Following completion of this 3 years training, “Diploma in General Nursing“will be awarded. Subsequently they may be appointed throughout the Sri Lanka for the serv) provision, Nurses wear a uniform at work and have to work in different shifts (including night shifts). They have a great opportunity get employment in foreign countries and in the private sector in Sri Lanka because of higher professional demand. Nurses could expand their career throughpromotions to nursing sister, nursing tutor, public health nursing sister,matron and principal of Nurses Training School. Graduate (B.Sc.) and post graduate schemes(MSc) for nurses are available.Sclected government Nursing Officers are given with pay study leave to follow these graduate programs in Sri Lankan state sector universities (for 3 years) and universities recognized by the University Grants Commission (30 day study leave per year). Medical Laboratory Technologist Medical Laboratory Technologist is a healthcare profession belongs to the category of Professions Supplementary to Medicine. They are involved in conducting medical laboratory tests and procedures needed for diagnosis, for asses sing effectiveness of treatment and for monitoring patient condition, MLT may conduct investigations in following areas; — Determining qualitatively and quantitatively the normal and abnormal components of, body fluids by conducting analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluid, gastric juices and other body fluids. — Isolate and identify microorganisms (bacteria, virus, fungi) from patients’ samples, food and water samples through various conservative and modern techniques. — Preparation of biopsy and autopsy samples for microscopic examination to diagnose malignancies.other diseases and for the forensic purposes respectively — Analyse the blood to diagnose diseases and for purposes for blood transfusions — Investigate samples to diagnose parasitic diseases — Maintain the laboratory, including general inventory, surgical inventory and ensure availability of consumables and other supplies — Ensure the laboratory is maintained according to national and intemational accepted standards and accreditation guidelines Training of Medical Laboratory Technologists are conducted in 3 Schools under the Mit ry of Health, which are located in Colombo, Peradeniya and Kalutara in English medium and awarded “Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology”, subsequent to a 2 years training programme, Then they may be appointed to all levels of hospitals in Sri Lanka. Medical Laboratory Technologist primarily works in medical laboratories at both government and private hospitals and specialized health institutions under the supervision of medical consultants in the laboratory field. They also work in health related research institutions and wherever diagnostic medical laboratories are functioning locally and internationally. Medical Laboratory Science is a fast-growing industry and scope for Medical Laboratory ‘Technologists is expanding both locally and globally with rising of genetics, molecular medicine and personalized medicine. In the government sector they have an opportunity to develop their career with grade promotions and joining as an academic staff in training institutions. Graduate (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science) programmes are available for Medical Laboratory nl ‘Technologists. Selected government Medical Laboratory Technologists are given with pay study leave to follow these graduate programs in Sri Lankan state sector universities (lor 3 years) and universities recognized by the University Grants Commission (30 days study leave per year). Pharma Pharmacist is a healthcare profession belongs to the category of Professions Supplementary to Medicine. They are responsible for issuing the medicines,pharmaceutical devices and other healthcare products prescribed by medical professionals to the patients, providing healthcare information for the Good Pharmacy Practice and maintaining the institutional medical supplies (includes drugs, surgical consumables, surgical instruments, medical equipment etc.), when they are working in the drug stores. Major areas of responsibility are, — Dispensing medicinal products, prescribed by prescribers, to the patients — Ensuring safe use of drugs by the patient by detecting incompatibi s in prescriptions, and communicating proper dosage and mode of administration to patients — Patient counselling for rational use medicine and pharmaceutical devices — Maintaining prescription files and recording issue of drugs — Ensure adequate medical supplies are maintained in the healthcare institutions through proper estimating, indenting, receiving, storing, issuing and inventory management. — Preserving quality of vaccines and other drugs — Collaborating with other health care professionals to monitor and evaluate the quantity, quality and effectiveness of the medicalsupplies thus improving patient care — Analysis of medicines to assure quality of medicines — Involy istration of medicines and pharmacies according to the legal system of Sri Lanka
