Mrs.

Bestor’s ELA Class’s Socratic Seminar Protocol

A protocol is a system of rules that govern interactions among people. For our purposes, our
Socratic Seminar protocols will guide not just how we interact with those in our Socratic Circles but
also how we grow in our ability to confidently present and represent our own thoughts and ideas.

To that end, presented below as “I will” statements, are our goals in using our SSP1 (Socratic
Seminar Protocol):

During Socratic Seminar I will…

1. Learn to recognize my own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence
responses to and behavior during Socratic Seminar (Self-awareness)

2. Accurately assess my strengths and limitations, with confidence, optimism, and a growth
mindset2 (Self-awareness)

3. Take the perspective of and empathize with others in my Socratic Circle, including those
from diverse backgrounds and cultures. (Social Awareness)

4. Seek to understand social and ethical norms for behavior in the context of the Socratic
Seminar (Social Awareness)

5. Work to regulate my emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in Socratic CIrcle — effectively

managing my stress, controlling my impulses, and motivating myself to stay engaged in the
discussion. (Self Management)

6. Develop the ability to set and work toward personal and academic goals as they relate to
Socratic Seminar. (Self Management)

7. Establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and
groups within the context of Socratic Seminar (Relationship Skills)

8. Communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with those in my Socratic Circle, resist
inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when
needed (Relationship Skills)
