FOREWORD
During this quarter our Sabbath school studies are based on Lessons From
the Books ofHaggai and Zechariah. How does this subject relate to the remnant
people of God living today? There are some interesting parallels we can observe:
Haggai and Zechariah were called by God in an hour of spiritual crisis, at a time
when- just as in our day-the prevailing temptation for God's professed people
was the pursuit of their own selfish interests. In the face of difficult challenges,
both then and now, the Lord has had a work to be completed-a task of revival,
restoration, and reformation.
Through the prophet Zechariah an earnest appeal was to be given "to the
children of Israel who are still in Babylon, the land of their captivity. At the time
the decree of Cyrus was given, nearly a score of years before, only a compara-
tively small number, a mere 'remnant,' had returned to Judea. By far the greater
portion had failed of discerning the opening providence of God, as revealed in
the decree of King Cyrus. They had chosen to remain behind, in a heathen land,
rather than to return to Jerusalem" (The Review and Herald, December 26, 1907).
Brethren, could it be that we, like Israel of old, tend to linger in Babylon by
clinging to some of the attitudes, values and practices perpetuated by spiritual
Babylon today?
Even after the Jews had been graciously delivered from Babylonian soil and
had begun sincere efforts to restore God's holy temple, their lack of faith was
revealed by the way in which they were so readily intimidated by obstacles. It
was not long before they lost their first love and slacked off their vigilance by
focussing their attention primarily on their own temporal prosperity. Yet try as
they may, they seemed to be getting nowhere. Even the elements of nature foiled
their efforts. Since these natural bounties had been employed so selfishly by
them, God's special blessing had been removed.
By thus concentrating on their own personal interests to the neglect of the
work of God, the Jews had lost sight of His great purpose in restoring them to
the land ofjudea. The Lord in His abundant mercy raised up the prophets Haggai
and Zechariah to pinpoint the cause of their problems and bring messages of
hope to renew their faith and courage.
The prophet Zechariah reveals the Source and power by which God's people
are to enlighten the whole world in these last days. It is our earnest prayer that
the Lord may guide and bless all Sabbath school members everywhere as we
diligently study to complete, by God's grace, the job of moral restoration so ur-
gently needed before the imminent return of the Desire of all nations.

Building for Eternity
With thousands of His children still in ancient Babylon, "the Lord
foresaw the troublous times that [were tol follow in the reign of
Xerxes-the Ahasuerus of the book of Esther. And so, in a time of
special favor and opportunity, the message was given, through
Zechariah:
" 'Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith
the Lord: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven,
saith the Lord. Deliver thyself, 0 Zion, that dwellest with the daugh-
ter ofBabylon. For thus saith the Lord of hosts: After the glory hath
he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth
you toucheth the apple of his eye. For, behold, I will shake mine
hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye
shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me.'
"How sad it is to contemplate that this touching appeal met with
so little response! Had this entreaty to flee from Babylon been
heeded, how different might have been the condition of the Jews in
the trying times of Mordecai and Esther!"-The Review and Herald,
December 26, 1907. [Author's italics.)
Do we turn a deaf ear to similar appeals today? Do we make more
trouble for ourselves and our children by allowing ourselves to re-
main so entrenched in the ways of Babylon that we fail to discern
God's ways? A multitude of distractions seem to bind us to the world.
Yet Jesus warned us in Luke 21:34, ''Take heed to yourselves, lest
at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunk-
enness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you un-
awares."
We must not allow our own personal burdens, cares, and self-
ish interests to obscure our involvement in God's building project
for today. And what is this project? Our greatest need today is not
so much for a physical building, but rather the building up of char-
acters to fully reflect the image of Jesus Christ. There is a work of
deep spiritual reformation needed and the honest souls must be
called out of Babylon. "And they that shall be of thee shall build the
old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many gen-
erations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The
restorer of paths to dwell in" (Isaiah 58:12). ''Who is it that shall build
the old waste places, and raise up the foundation of many genera-
tions? Where are the people who have had light from heaven to see
that a breach has been made in the law of God?"- The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1l!:\2.

Return From Captivity
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord,
thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end" (Jeremiah
29:11).

"The advent of the army of Cyrus before the walls of Babylon was to
the Jews a sign that their deliverance from captivity was drawing nigh."-
Prophets and Kings, p. 551.

THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY December 29

1. Why had the Lord allowed the Jews to be taken captive to Babylon,
and the temple and city of Jerusalem to be destroyed? 2 Chronicles
36:11-19; Jeremiah 25:8-13; 29:17-19. What lesson did God
intend for them to learn in Babylon?

"God had pleaded with Judah not to provoke Him to anger, but they had
hearkened not. Finally sentence was pronounced against them. They were
to be led away captive to Babylon. The Chaldeans were to be used as the
instrument by which God would chastise His disobedient people. The suf-
ferings of the men of Judah were to be in proportion to the light they had
had and to the warnings they had despised and rejected."-Prophets and Kings,
p.425.
"Humbled in the sight of the nations, those who once had been recog-
nized as favored of Heaven above all other peoples of the earth were to learn
in exile the lesson of obedience so necessary for their future happiness.
Until they had learned this lesson, God could not do for them all that He
desired to do."-Ibid., p. 475.

2. How long were the Jews to remain in Babylon before they would be
permitted to return to their own land? 2 Chronicles 36:20,21. With
what wonderful promises of restoration were the remnant people
comforted? Jeremiah 29: 11-14; 30: 1-3.

"Prophecies of oncoming judgment were mingled with promises of fi-

nal and glorious deliverance. Those who should choose to make their peace
with God and live holy lives amid the prevailing apostasy, would receive
strength for every trial and be enabled to witness for Him with mighty power.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 5

And in the ages to come the deliverance wrought in their behalf would ex-
ceed in fame that wrought for the children of Israel at the time of the Exo-
dus."-Prophets and Kings, p. 427.

THE RESTORATION FORETOLD December 30

3. What did the prophet Daniel understand as he studied anew the

prophecies of Jeremiah concerning the end of the captivity of the
Israelites in Babylon and their imminent return to Judea? What did
he do as a result? Jeremiah 29:10; Daniel 9:1-3.

4. What prayer did Daniel offer, and whom did he include in the
confession of the sins of his fathers? When did he offer his prayer?
Howwas it answered? DanieI9:4-11, 18,20,21.

"With faith founded on the sure word of prophecy, Daniel pleaded with
the Lord for the speedy fulfillment of these promises. He pleaded for the
honor of God to be preserved. In his petition he identified himself fully with
those who had fallen short of the divine purpose, confessing their sins as
his own." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 554, 555.
"Heaven was bending low to hear the earnest supplication of the prophet.
Even before he had finished his plea for pardon and restoration, the mighty
Gabriel again appeared to him, and called his attention to the vision he had
seen prior to the fall of Babylon and the death of Belshazzar. And then the
angel outlined before him in detail the period of the seventy weeks, which
was to begin at the time of 'the going forth of the commandment to restore
and to build Jerusalem.' "-Ibid., p. 556.

THE FORCES OF GOOD AND EVIL December 31

5. Who was working in behalf of the Jews as Satan tried to prevent the
fulfillment of the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah regarding their
release from captivity? Who finally came to the aid ofthe mightiest of
angels in his struggle against the powers of darkness? DaniellO: 1,
10-13,18-20.

"While Satan was striving to influence the highest powers in the king-
dom of Medo-Persia to show disfavor to God's people, angels worked in be-
half of the exiles. The controversy was one in which all heaven was inter-
ested. Through the prophet Daniel we are given a glimpse of this mighty
struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. For three weeks
Gabriel wrestled with the powers of darkness, seeking to counteract the
influences at work on the mind of Cyrus; and before the contest closed, Christ
Himself came to Gabriel's aid. [Daniel 10:13 quoted.J"-Prophets and Kings,
pp. 571, 572.

6 Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997

6. Give an example from Bible history when the forces of good battling
against the powers of darkness became visible. 2 Kings 6: 15-17.
What confidence can we have in God's protection and deliverance
from the forces of evil?

"The faithful, praying ones are, as it were, shut in with God. They them-
selves know not how securely they are shielded. Urged on by Satan, the
rulers of this world are seeking to destroy them; but could their eyes be
opened, as were the eyes of Elisha's servant at Dothan, they would see the
angels of God encamped about them, by their brightness and glory hold-
ing in check the hosts of darkness."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 475.

PROPHECIES FULFILLED January 1

7. Through whom did the Lord begin to fulfill the prophecies of Isaiah
and Jeremiah regarding the return of the Jews from Babylon to
Judea? Isaiah 44:28; 2 Chronicles 36:22,23.

"More than a century before the birth of Cyrus, Inspiration had men-
tioned him by name, and had caused a record to be made of the actual work
he should do in taking the city of Babylon unawares, and in preparing the
way for the release of the children of the captivity."-Prophets and Kings, p. 551.
"Now, just at the time God had said He would cause His temple at]erusa-
lem to be rebuilt, He moved upon Cyrus as His agent to discern the proph-
ecies concerning himself, with which Daniel was so familiar, and to grant
the Jewish people their liberty."-Ibid., p. 557.

8. What message did the Ruler ofthe universe address Cyrus, the king
of Persia? Isaiah 45: 1-6,13. What was the response of Cyrus to the
prophecy ofIsaiah? Ezra 1: 1-3.

"As the king [of Persia] saw the words foretelling, more than a hun-
dred years before his birth, the manner in which Babylon should be taken;
as he read the message addressed to him by the Ruler of the universe ...
as he saw before his eyes the declaration of the eternal God, 'For Jacob My
servant's sake, and Israel Mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name:
I have surnamed thee, though thou has not known Me;' as he traced the
inspired record, 'I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all
his ways: he shall build My city, and he shall let go My captives, not for
price nor reward,' his heart was profoundly moved, and he determined to
fulfill his divinely appointed mission.... He would let the Judean captives
go free; he would help them restore the temple of Jehovah."-Prophets and
Kings,pp.557,558.

RETURN FROM EXILE January 2
9. How did many ofthe Jewish captives in Babylon respond when they
heard the decree of Cyrus permitting them to return to their own
land to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple? Ezra 1:5, 6.

"Tidings of this decree [of Cyrus] reached the farthermost provinces

of the king's realm, and everywhere among the children of the dispersion
there was great rejoicing. Many, like Daniel, had been studying the proph-
ecies, and had been seeking God for His promised intervention in behalf of
Zion. And now their prayers were being answered; and with heartfelt joy they
could unite in singing: [Psalm 126:1-3 quoted] ."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 558, 559.

10. What is written about the Jews who took advantage ofthe decree of
Cyrus by returning to their own land to rebuild Jerusalem and the
temple? Ezra 2:64,65.

" 'The chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and
the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised'-these were the
goodly remnant, about fifty thousand strong, from among the Jews in the
lands of exile, who determined to take advantage of the wonderful oppor-
tunity offered them 'to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusa-
lem.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 559.
"Upon Zerubbabel (known also as Sheshbazzar), a descendant of King
David, Cyrus placed the responsibility of acting as governor of the com-
pany returning to Judea; and with him was associated Joshua the high
priest."-Ibid., pp. 559, 560.

"A great work is committed to those who present the truth in Europe.
. . . There are France and Germany, with their great cities and teeming popu-
lation. There are Italy, Spain, and Portugal ... opened to the Word of God-
opened to receive the last message of warning to the world."-Evangelism,
p.408.
Portugal is a nation situated on the southwestern coast of the Iberian
peninsula, with an area of 91,641 square kilometers (35,383 square miles).
The population is 10.4 million, 94% of whom are Roman Catholics.
The Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement began working in Por-
tugal in 1936. For many years the brethren worshipped only in private homes
until the church was able to be registered in 1975. By the grace of God,
our missionary labors have especially flourished in the 1990s through the
combined efforts of ministers and Bible workers reaching souls through
the colporteur work. This period of dynamic activity has culminated in the
distribution of several thousand books on health and on the present truth.
A plan has been adopted to implement a program for natural health care,
designed to make the most effective contact with the suffering ones of the
world, leading them to the great Physician.
Through the sacrifices of our workers in the Portuguese Field, as well
as the generosity of helpful brethren and friends, it has been possible to
erect a building of about 400 square meters (approximately 4,200 square
feet) on a parcel of land around 5,000 square meters (about 11/ 4 acre) near
the town of Brejos de Azeitao, about 17 miles (25 kilometers) from Lisbon.
Although the treatment rooms and offices were dedicated on April 25, 1994,
due to the lack of equipment, only very basic treatments have been pos-
sible to be administered so far. Proper equipment for the institute is greatly
needed. The time for this work is certainly ripe, as the public is currently
very open to natural methods of healing.
We appeal to our dear brethren and friends around the world, who are
moved by the Holy Spirit, to respond to our request. Please bring your spe-
cial offering on Sabbath, January 4,1997, that the message of health reform
ordained by God may touch the hearts of many souls who can be reached
in no other way. May the Lord richly recompense your generosity.

the Lord, because the foundation of the house ofthe Lord was laid" (Ezra

OFFERINGS FOR GOD'S WORK January 5

1. What provision did Cyrus make for the rebuilding of the house of
God inJudea?Whatthings taken by the Babylonians did he return to
the Jews, to be taken back to Jerusalem? Ezra 1 :4,7-11.

"The Lord has resources. His hand is on the machinery. When the time
came for His temple to be rebuilt, He moved upon Cyrus as His agent to
discern the prophecies concerning Himself, and to grant the Jewish people
their liberty. And more, Cyrus furnished them the necessary facilities for
rebuilding the temple of the Lord. This work began under Cyrus, and his
successor carried on the work begun."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White
Comments], vol. 4, p. 1175.

2. What offerings did the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin,
the priests, and the Levites receive from their friends and those
about them in Babylon for the work of God at Jerusalem? Ezra 1:6.

"[The] friends [of the goodly remnant] did not permit them to go empty-
handed. [Ezra 1:6 quoted.] And to these and many other voluntary offer-
ings were added 'the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar
had broughtforth out ofJerusalem.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 559.

A BASIC STEP January 6

3. What was one of the first things that the exiles from Babylon did
upon their arrival in Jerusalem? Ezra 3:1:, 2, 6. How can we be
inspired by the attitude of the people at that momentous time?

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 11

"As speedily as possible, an altar was erected on the site of the ancient
altar in the temple court. To the exercises connected with the dedication of
this altar, the people had 'gathered themselves together as one man;' and
there they united in re-establishing the sacred services that had been in-
terrupted at the time of the destruction ofJerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar."-
Prophets and Kings, p. 560.
"The hours appointed for the morning and the evening sacrifice were
regarded as sacred, and they came to be observed as the set time for wor-
ship throughout the Jewish nation."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 353, 354.

4. What do the morning and evening sacrifices offered daily by the

ancient people of God signify for us today? Exodus 29:38, 39.

"Like the patriarchs of old, those who profess to love God should erect
an altar to the Lord wherever they pitch their tent. If ever there was a time
when every house should be a house of prayer, it is now. Fathers and moth-
ers should often lift up their hearts to God in humble supplication for them-
selves and their children. Let the father, as priest of the household, lay upon
the altar of God the morning and evening sacrifice, while the wife and chil-
dren unite in prayer and praise. In such a household Jesus will love to tarry."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 144.
"In this custom Christians have an example for morning and evening
prayer. While God condemns a mere round of ceremonies, without the spirit
of worship, He looks with great pleasure upon those who love Him, bowing
morning and evening to seek pardon for sins committed and to present their
requests for needed blessings."-Ibid., p. 354.

o Tuesday
PREPARING TO REBUILD January 7

5. What worthy example did some of the "chief of the fathers" give to
the rest of the people in making further provisions for the expenses
ofthe second temple? Ezra 2:68,69. Of what had the Jewish people
been deprived while in Babylon, and for what did they now long?

" 'The chief of the fathers' led out in offering of their substance to help
defray the expense of rebuilding the temple; and the people, following their
example, gave freely of their meager store."-Prophets and Kings, p. 560.
''The setting up of the altar of daily burnt offerings greatly cheered the
faithful remnant. Heartily they entered into the preparations necessary for
the rebuilding of the temple, gathering courage as these preparations ad-
vanced from month to month. They had for many years been deprived of
the visible tokens of God's presence. And now, surrounded as they were by
many sad reminders of the apostasy of their fathers, they longed for some
abiding token of divine forgiveness and favor."-Ibid., p. 560.

12 Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997

6. What lessons can we learn from the examples of the Jewish exiles
returning from Babylon and the Israelites in the wilderness in
connection with their generous offerings for the construction ofthe
tabernacle and the rebuilding ofthe second temple? Exodus 35:21-
24,27-29; 36:3, 5-7.

'The murmurings of the Israelites and the visitations of God's judgments

because of their sins are recorded as a warning to after-generations. And
their devotion, their zeal and liberality, are an example worthy of imitation.
All who love the worship of God and prize the blessing of His sacred pres-
ence will manifest the same spirit of sacrifice in preparing a house where
He may meet with them. They will desire to bring to the Lord an offering of
the very best that they possess. A house built for God should not be left in
debt, for He is thereby dishonored. An amount sufficient to accomplish the
work should be freely given, that the workmen may be able to say, as did
the builders of the tabernacle, 'Bring no more offerings.' "-Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 344-347.
o Wednesday
FOUNDATION OF THE SECOND TEMPLE January 8

7. Who led out in the work of rebuilding? Ezra 3:8,9. When were the
cornerstone and foundation ofthe second temple atJerusalem laid?

'The workmen engaged in the preparation of the building material, found

among the ruins some of the immense stones brought to the temple site in
the days of Solomon. These were made ready for use, and much new mate-
rial was provided; and soon the work was advanced to the point where the
foundation stone must be laid. This was done in the presence of many thou-
sands who had assembled to witness the progress of the work and to give
expression to their joy in having a part in it."-Prophets and Kings, p. 563.

8. What were the people doing while the cornerstone was being set in
position? Ezra 3:10, 11. What can we learn from the way in which
the cornerstone-laying ceremony was conducted? 1 Corinthians
14:40.

LACK OF FAITH EXHIBITED January 9
9. How did many of the priests, Levites, and chief of the fathers, who
had seen the first temple, react at the cornerstone-laying ceremony
ofthe second temple, and why? Ezra 3: 12.

'The house that was about to be rebuilt had been the subject of many
prophecies concerning the favor that God desired to show Zion, and all who
were present at the laying of the cornerstone should have entered heartily
into the spirit of the occasion."-Prophets and Kings, p. 563.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 13

"But there came another difficulty. Lamentation and weeping and mourn-
ing was heard because the temple was not outwardly so glorious as the first.
There were those who used their conversational powers to talk of the infe-
riority of the building to the one built by Solomon. Mingled with music and
singing, with rejoicing and praise to God, was an inharmonious sound, not
of joy or praise or thanksgiving, but of dissatisfaction. [Ezra 3:12 quoted.]"-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1134.

10. What attitude should the builders have avoided in order to escape
the negative results that followed? Matthew 14:31 (last part).

"Could those who failed to rejoice at the laying of the foundation stone
of the temple have foreseen the results of their lack of faith on that day,
they would have been appalled. Little did they realize the weight of their
words of disapproval and disappointment; little did they know how much
their expressed dissatisfaction would delay the completion of the Lord's
house."-Prophets and Kings, p. 565.

1. What effect did the lamenting, murmuring, and complaining of

some of the priests, Levites, and chief of the fathers have upon the
people and workers? Ezra 3: 13.

"The murmuring and complaining, and the unfavorable comparisons

made, had a depressing influence on the minds of many and weakened the
hands of the builders. The workmen were led to question whether they should
proceed with the erection of a building that at the beginning was so freely
criticized and was the cause of so much lamentation."-Prophets and Kings,
p.564.

2. What warning should we heed from observing the murmurers' lack

offaith? Philippians 2:14.

"They saw enough to make them praise God. They saw that the Lord
had visited them after He had scattered them for their ingratitude and dis-
loyalty to His commandments. He had moved upon the heart of Cyrus to
aid those who were appointed to rebuild His house. But those who were
easily discouraged did not walk by faith. They entertained discouraging sen-
timents, that were not a savor of life unto good works."-The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1134.

IMPORTANT TRUTHS OVERLOOKED January 13

3. What important points oftruth did the murmurers neglectto see by

comparing the first and second temples? Psalm 51:17; Isaiah 57:15.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 15

"The magnificence of the first temple, and the imposing rites of its reli-
gious services, had been a source of pride to Israel before their captivity;
but their worship had ofttimes been lacking in those qualities which God
regards as most essential. The glory of the first temple, the splendor of its
service, could not recommend them to God; for that which is alone of value
in His sight, they did not offer. They did not bring Him the sacrifice of a
humble and contrite spirit."-Prophets and Kings, p. 565.

4. Whatis the result when the vital principles ofthe kingdom of God are
forgotten? In what kind of worship is God really interested? Psalm
29:2; John 4:23, 24; 1 Peter 3:3,4.

"It is when the vital principles of the kingdom of God are lost sight of,
that ceremonies become multitudinous and extravagant. It is when the char-
acter building is neglected, when the adornment of the soul is lacking, when
the simplicity of godliness is despised, that pride and love of display demand
magnificent church edifices, splendid adornings, and imposing ceremonials.
But in all this God is not honored. He values His church, not for its exter-
nal advantages, but for the sincere piety which distinguishes it from the
world."-Prophets and Kings, p. 565.

AN OFFER WISELY REFUSED January 14

5. Who wanted to help the Jews with the rebuilding of the temple at
Jerusalem? Ezra 4:1,2.

"Only a remnant had chosen to return from Babylon; and now, as they
undertake a work seemingly beyond their strength, their nearest neighbors
come with an offer of help. The Samaritans refer to their worship of the true
God, and express a desire to share the privileges and blessings connected
with the temple service."-Prophets and Kings, p. 568.

6. Why was this seemingly generous offer rejected by the Jewish lead-
ers? Ezra 4:3.

"Had the Jewish leaders accepted this offer of assistance, they would
have opened a door for the entrance of idolatry. They discerned the insin-
cerity of the Samaritans. They realized that help gained through an alliance
with these men would be as nothing in comparison with the blessing they
might expect to receive by following the plain commands of Jehovah."-
Prophets and Kings, p. 568.

A TIMELESS PRINCIPLE January 15
7. What lesson should we learn from the experience ofthe Jews in their
refusal to compromise with the Samaritans? What did the apostle
Paul write to us about this matter? 2 Corinthians 6:14-16.

16 ·Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997

"It is not the open and avowed enemies of the cause of God that are
most to be feared. Those who, like the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin,
come with smooth words and fair speeches, apparently seeking for friendly
alliance with God's children, have greater power to deceive. Against such
every soul should be on the alert, lest some carefully concealed and mas-
terly snare take him unaware. And especially today, while earth's history is
closing, the Lord requires of His children a vigilance that knows no relax-
ation."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 570, 571.

8. Why are God's children called outofmodern Babylon today? Jeremiah

51:6; Revelation 18:4. What does Babylon symbolize?

"The state of corruption and apostasy that in the last days would exist
in the religious world, was presented to the prophet John in the vision of
Babylon, 'that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.' ...
Before its destruction the call is to be given from heaven, 'Come out of her,
My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of
her plagues.' ... As in the days of Noah and Lot, there must be a marked
separation from sin and sinners. There can be no compromise between God
and the world, no turning back to secure earthly treasures. 'Ye cannot serve
God and mammon.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 167.

WHEN FACED WITH OPPOSITION January 16

9. What was the result of the determined efforts of the Samaritans to

frustrate the work of construction on the temple? Ezra 4:4-6, 23.
How did the Israelites finally react? Ezra 4:24 (first part).

"The Samaritans tried to hinder this work [of rebuilding the temple and
Jerusaleml. By their false reports they aroused suspicion in minds easily
stirred up to suspect; and because ofthis discouragement, the Jews became
unbelieving and indifferent in regard to the work that the Lord had signi-
fied He would have done."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments],
vol. 4, pp. 1175, 1176.
"During the reign of Cambyses the work on the temple progressed slowly.
And during the reign of the false Smerdis (called Artaxerxes in Ezra 4:7)
the Samaritans induced the unscrupulous impostor to issue a decree for-
bidding the Jews to rebuild their temple and city."-Prophets and Kings, pp.
572,573.

10. Describe the attitude which God would have His people manifest
when facing fierce opposition. 2 Corinthians 4:8-11, 16-18.

"The Israelites had no real excuse for leaving their work on the temple.
The time when the most serious objections were raised, was the time for
them to persevere in building. But they were actuated by a selfish dislike

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 17

to encounter danger by arousing the opposition of their enemies. They did
not possess the faith that is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence
of things not seen. They hesitated to move forward by faith in the opening
providences of God, because they could not see the end from the begin-
ning. When difficulties arose, they were easily turned from the work.
''This history will be repeated. There will be religious failures because
men do not have faith. When they look at the things that are seen, impossi-
bilities appear; but God can lead them step by step in the course He desires
them to take. His work will advance only as His servants move forward by
faith. While they may be called upon to pass through trying times, yet they
should ever remember that they are contending with a weakened, beaten
foe. God's people will finally triumph over every power of darkness."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1175.

FRUITS OF DISCOURAGEMENT January 19
1. Instead of becoming totally discouraged by the actions of their
enemies and ceasing their labor on the temple, what should the Jews
have done? Psalm 25:1,2; Daniel 9:13. Who had been working in
their behalf?
"This was a time of wonderful opportunity for the Jews. The highest
agencies of heaven were working on the hearts of kings, and it was for the
people of God to labor with the utmost activity to carry out the decree of
Cyrus. They should have spared no effort to restore the temple and its ser-
vices, and to re-establish themselves in their Judean homes. But in the day
of God's power many proved unwilling."-Prophets and Kings, p. 572.

2. To what wrong conclusion did many of the workers come as a result

of the determined opposition of their enemies and the negative
influence of the lamenters at the cornerstone-laying ceremony?
Haggai 1:2.
''The opposition of their enemies was strong and determined, and gradu-
ally the builders lost heart. Some could not forget the scene at the laying of
the cornerstone, when many had given expression to their lack of confidence
in the enterprise. And as the Samaritans grew more bold, many of the Jews
questioned whether, after all, the time had come to rebuild. The feeling soon
became widespread. Many of the workmen, discouraged and disheartened,
returned to their homes to take up the ordinary pursuits of life."-Prophets
and Kings, p. 572.
"[Haggai 1:1, 2 quoted.] The expression, 'This people say,' is significant.
In the hour of their opportunity, the Israelites had not shown themselves
willing. Prompt obedience is expected of those whom the Lord chooses and
leads. Pleas for delay are a dishonor to God.... This is why, in a communi-
cation through His prophet, He referred to them 'not as 'my people,' but as
'this people.' "-The SDABible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p.1175.

A CALL TO CONSIDER January 20

3. Whom did the Lord call to deliver messages of rebuke, as well as of

encouragement, to the remnant in Judah ata time when God's house
lay neglected and uncompleted? Ezra 5: 1.

"Even this dark hour was not without hope for those whose trust was
in God. The prophets Haggai and Zechariah were raised up to meet the cri-
sis. In stirring testimonies these appointed messengers revealed to the people
the cause of their troubles."-Prophets and Kings, p. 573.

4. What inconsistencies did the Lord point out to the Jews through His
prophet, Haggai, regarding their attitude towards the work on His
temple? Haggai 1 :3-5.

''To those who had become discouraged, Haggai addressed the searching
inquiry, 'Is it time for you, 0 ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this
house lie waste? Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your
ways.' Why have you done so little? Why do you feel concern for your own
buildings and unconcern for the Lord's building? Where is the zeal you once
felt for the restoration of the Lord's house? What have you gained by serv-
ing self? The desire to escape poverty has led you to neglect the temple,
but this neglect has brought upon you that which you feared."-Prophets and
Kings, p. 574.

THE RESULT OF NEGLECTING GOD'S CAUSE January 21

5. What had happened to the temporal and spiritual prosperity ofthe

Jews at this time? What purpose had they completely lost sight of?
Haggai 1: 6, 9 (first part).

"Work as they might, they did not prosper. The very elements of na-
ture seemed to conspire against them. Because they had let the temple lie
waste, the Lord sent upon their substance a wasting drought. God had be-
stowed upon them the fruits of field and garden, the corn and the wine arid
the oil, as a token of His favor; but because they had used these bountiful
gifts so selfishly, the blessings were removed.
"Such were the conditions existing during the early part of the reign of
Darius Hystaspes. Spiritually as well as temporally, the Israelites were in a
pitiable state. So long had they murmured and doubted; so long had they
chosen to make personal interests first, while viewing with apathy the Lord's
temple in ruins, that many had lost sight of God's purpose in restoring them
to Judea; and these were saying, 'The time is not come, the time that the
Lord's house should be built.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 573.
20 Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997
6. What was the Lord's explanation as to why they were not prospering?
Haggai 1:9 (last part), 10, 11.

"The lack of temporal prosperity was the result of a neglect to put God's
interests first, the prophets declared. Had the Israelites honored God, had
they shown Him due respect and courtesy, by making the building of His
house their first work, they would have invited His presence and blessing."-
Prophets and Kings, pp. 573, 574.

GOD'S ADVICE AND PROMISE January 22

7. What did the Lord advise the Jewish people to do in order to alleviate
their deplorable situation at this time, and how did they respond?
Haggai 1:7, 8,12.

''The message of counsel and reproof given through Haggai was taken
to heart by the leaders and people of Israel. They felt that God was in ear-
nest with them. They dared not disregard the repeated instruction sent
them-that their prosperity, both temporal and spiritual, was dependent on
faithful obedience to God's commands."-Prophets and Kings, p. 575.

8. What was the Lord's repeated promise to the Jews after they had
agreed to obey His voice concerning the completion of the work on
the temple atJerusalem? Haggai 1:13; 2:19 (last part).

"With fields lying waste, with their scant store of provisions rapidly fail-
ing, and surrounded as they were by unfriendly peoples, the Israelites nev-
ertheless moved forward by faith in response to the call of God's messen-
gers, and labored diligently to restore the ruined temple. It was a work re-
quiring firm reliance upon God....
"With heartfelt repentance and a willingness to advance by faith, came
the promise of temporal prosperity. 'From this day,' the Lord declared, 'will
I bless you.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 577.

TWO TEMPLES CONTRASTED January 23

9. What lesson did the Lord want to teach His people through the
inferiority ofthe second temple? Haggai 2:2,3 (compare Jeremiah
7:2-12; Isaiah 1:11-20); Psalm 34:18; Luke 18:10-14.

"Of surpassing beauty and unrivaled splendor was the palatial building
which Solomon and his associates erected for God and His worship. Gar-
nished with precious stones, surrounded by spacious courts with magnifi-
cent approaches, and lined with carved cedar and burnished gold, the temple
structure, with its broidered hangings and rich furnishings, was a fit em-
blem of the living church of God on earth." -Prophets and Kings, p. 36.
Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 21
''The second temple did not equal the first in magnificence, nor was it
hallowed by those visible tokens of the divine presence which pertained to
the first temple. There was no manifestation of supernatural power to mark
its dedication. No cloud of glory was seen to fill the newly erected sanctu-
ary. No fire from heaven descended to consume the sacrifice upon its altar.
The Shekinah no longer abode between the cherubim in the most holy place;
the ark, the mercy seat, and the tables of testimony were not found there.
No sign from heaven made known to the inquiring priest the will of Jeho-
vah."-Ibid., pp. 596, 597.
"Christ hungers to receive from His vineyard the fruit of holiness and
unselfishness. He looks for the principles of love and goodness. Not all the
beauty of art can bear comparison with the beauty of temper and character
to be revealed in those who are Christ's representatives. It is the atmosphere
of grace which surrounds the soul of the believer, the Holy Spirit working
upon mind and heart, that makes him a savor of life unto life, and enables
God to bless his work."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 298.

10. What encouraging message did the Lord renew to His remnant
people in Judah through His prophet? Haggai 2:4, 5.

"Notwithstanding the fact that they had repeatedly 'rebelled, and vexed
His Holy Spirit' (Isaiah 63:10), God once more, through the messages of
His prophet, was stretching out His hand to save. As a recognition of their
cooperation with His purpose, He was renewing His covenant that His Spirit
should remain among them; and He bade them, 'Fear not.' "-Prophets and

THE GLORY OF THE SECOND TEMPLE January 26

1. What should God's people in all ages understand about the glory of
the second temple, and how was this prophecy fulfilled? Haggai 2:7
(second part), 9; Luke 2:25-32.

"In being honored with the personal presence of Christ during His early
ministry, and in this alone, did the second temple exceed the first in glory.
The 'Desire of all nations' had indeed come to His temple, when the Man of
Nazareth taught and healed in the sacred courts."-Prophets and Kings, p. 597.
"For centuries learned men have endeavored to show wherein the prom-
ise of God, given to Haggai, has been fulfilled; yet in the advent of Jesus of
Nazareth, the Desire of all nations, who by His personal presence hallowed
the precincts of the temple, many have steadfastly refused to see any spe-
cial significance. Pride and unbelief have blinded their minds to the true
meaning of the prophet's words."-Ibid.

2. Since Christ is no longer physically walking on earth today, how can

God's glory fill His church now? 2 Corinthians 4:6,7.

"[God] values His church, not for its external advantages, but for the
sincere piety which distinguishes it from the world. He estimates it accord-
ing to the growth of its members in the knowledge of Christ, according to
their progress in spiritual experience....
"A congregation may be the poorest in the land. It may be without the
attractions of any outward show; but if the members possess the principles
of the character of Christ, angels will unite with them in their worship. The
praise and thanksgiving from grateful hearts will ascend to God as a sweet
oblation." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 565, 566.

of Persia, what question did the Lord give to Haggai to be specifi-
cally addressed to the priests, and why? Haggai 2: 10-12; Leviticus
10:10.

4. What should we learn from the Lord's description of Israel's spiri-

tual state during the time when His house in Jerusalem lay unfin-
ished? Haggai 2:13,14; Numbers 19:11.

"Angels keep a faithful record of every man's work, and as judgment

passes upon the house of God, the sentence of each is recorded by his name,
and the angel is commissioned to spare not the unfaithful servants, but to
cut them down at the time of slaughter. And that which was committed to
their trust is taken from them. Their earthly treasure is then swept away,
and they have lost all. And the crowns they might have worn, had they been
faithful, are put upon the heads of those saved by the faithful servants whose
means was constantly in use for God. And everyone they have been the means
of saving, adds stars to their crown in glory, and increases their eternal re-
ward."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 198.

BLESSINGS WITHHELD AND IMPARTED January 28

5. What had happened to the Jews when God withheld from them the
blessings ofthe earth? Haggai 2:15-17.

"A striking illustration of the results of selfishly withholding even free-

will offerings from the cause of God was given in the days of the prophet
Haggai. After their return from the captivity in Babylon, the Jews under-
took to rebuild the temple of the Lord; but meeting determined opposition
from their enemies, they discontinued the work; and a severe drought, by
which they were reduced to actual want, convinced them that it was impos-
sible to complete the building ofthe temple."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 527.

6. What appeal did God renew to them? Haggai 2: 18. Howcan this plea
apply to us today? 2 Corinthians 9:6; Mark 8:34.

"[Haggai 2:14-19 quoted.] In this scripture the heart is unveiled. The

Lord takes cognizance of all the works of the children of men. He can di-
minish; He can increase and bless.
"Professing believers who reveal by their actions that they are still cling-
ing to selfish practices, are working upon worldly principles. The principles
of justice and integrity are not carried into the life-practice."- The SDA Bible

"It is through sacrifice that God's work must be carried forward. Of ev-
ery child of God self-sacrifice is required. Christ said: 'If any man will come
after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me'
(Luke 9:23) ."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 449.
"The spirit of liberality is the spirit of heaven. Christ's self-sacrificing
love is revealed upon the cross. That man might be saved, He gave all that
He had and then gave Himself. The cross of Christ appeals to the benevo-
lence of every follower of the blessed Saviour. The principle there illustrated
is to give, give. This, carried out in actual benevolence and good works, is
the true fruit of the Christian life. The principle of worldlings is to get, get,
and thus they expect to secure happiness; but carried out in all its bear-
ings, the fruit is misery and death.
"The light of the gospel shining from the cross of Christ rebukes self-
ishness and encourages liberality and benevolence."-Ibid., vol. 9, p. 254.

8. What was the final result? Ezra 6:14, 15. How can we apply this
example of zealous determination to the monumental task before us
of enlightening the world with the three angels' messages? Colossians
3:23,24.

"Those in the service of God must show animation and determination

in the work of winning souls. Remember that there are those who will per-
ish unless we as God's instrumentalities work with a determination that will
not fail nor become discouraged. The throne of grace is to be our continual
dependence."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 418.
"Remember that the nearer we approach the time of Christ's coming,
the more earnestly and firmly we are to work; for we are opposed by the
whole synagogue of Satan. We do not need feverish excitement, but that cour-
age which is born of genuine faith."-Ibid., p. 475.

LIGHT ON COMING EVENTS January 30

9. What was the fourth message which the Lord sent to Zerubbabel
through the prophet Haggai? Haggai 2:20-22.

''To Zerubbabel their leader-he who, through all the years since their
return from Babylon, had been so sorely tried-was given a most precious
message. The day was coming, the Lord declared, when all the enemies of
His chosen people would be cast down."-Prophets and Kings, p. 577.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 25

10. What prophecy did the Lord give with reference to Zerubbabel?
Why did the Lord leave on record His personal word to His servant?
Haggai 2:23.

"God will not suffer one of His truehearted workers to be left alone to
struggle against great odds and be overcome. He preserves as a precious
jewel everyone whose life is hid with Christ in God. Of every such an one
He says: 'I ... will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee' (Haggai
2:23)."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 67.
"Now the governor of Israel could see the meaning of the providence
that had led him through discouragement and perplexity; he could discern
God's purpose in it all.
"This personal word to Zerubbabel has been left on record for the en-
couragement of God's children in every age. God has a purpose in sending
trial to His children. He never leads them otherwise than they would choose
to be led if they could see the end from the beginning, and discern the glory
of the purpose that they are fulfilling. All that He brings upon them in test
and trial comes that they may be strong to do and to suffer for Him."-Prophets

SPECIAL MISSION OFFERING
for a Missionary School in Chile

Chile is a long, narrow country bordered on the north by Peru and on

the east by Bolivia and Argentina. Its southern and western borders along
the Pacific Ocean make this nation with its numerous islands a site of ex-
tensive maritime activity.
In an area of 292,257 square miles (756,946 square kilometers) (plus
482,625 square miles/1,250,000 square kilometers claimed as the Chilean
Antartic Territory), Chile is widely varied-from high mountains, volcanoes,
and arid desert spots to fertile Mediterranean-type farmland with an abun-
dance of fruit and vegetables. The beautiful rivers and lakes as well as mag-
nificent fjords give vast areas of the country a distinctly picturesque quality.
According to the 1992 census, the population of Chile was 13,231,803,
with nearly 30% being under 15 years of age. The majority of the people (about
79%) are Roman Catholics, followed by Pentecostal Protestants. Jewish per-
sons, those adhering to traditional native religions, and believers in other
faiths all constitute a very small minority.
The Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement began operating in Chile
in 1930 and was registered in 1947. As the work has progressed, now there
is need for a missionary school where our young people can receive the
essential preparation to labor in various branches of the Lord's vineyard.
We thank the Lord and the sister who has already donated a parcel of
land in an excellent location. It is near the city of Los Andes in a rural area
about 56 miles (90 kilometers) from Santiago (the capital of Chile). Con-
struction has begun on the school building, with the goal to begin opera-
tion in March 1997. Most of the local brethren are doing all that they possi-
bly can to see this project come to fruition. You are also invited to do all
you possibly can to help establish this educational center for the honor and
glory of God. Many young people are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to
be trained for service in the noble cause of the Master.
We wish to thank in advance all our dear brethren and friends around
the world for the generous offerings you will be giving on Sabbath, Febru-
ary 1, 1997, to hasten the proclamation of the gospel. May the Lord abun-
dantly bless you!

Zechariah had a series of visions regarding the work of God in the earth.
These messages, given in the form of parables and symbols, came at a time
of great uncertainty and anxiety, and were of peculiar significance to the
men who were advancing in the name of the God of Israel. It seemed to the
leaders as if the permission granted the Jews to rebuild was about to be
withdrawn; the future appeared very dark. God saw that His people were in
need of being sustained and cheered by a revelation of His infinite compas-
sion and love."-Prophets and Kings, p. 580.

2. How did the Lord use the prophets Haggai and Zechariah in such a
way as to complement one another? Ecclesiastes 4:9.

"The earnest pleadings and the encouragements given through Haggai

were emphasized and added to by Zechariah, whom God raised up to stand
by his side in urging Israel to carry out the command to arise and build."-
Prophets and Kings, p. 576.

A MESSAGE OF APPEAL February 3

3. What statement did the Lord make concerning the fathers in Israel?
How does His appeal to the remnant in.Judah speak also to His
remnant in these last days? Zechariah 1:2, 3.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 29

"Zechariah's first message was an assurance that God's word never fails
and a promise of blessing to those who would hearken to the sure word of
prophecy."-Prophets and Kings, p. 576.
"The Lord has bidden us to draw nigh to Him and He will draw nigh to
us; and drawing nigh to Him, we receive the grace by which to do those
works which will be rewarded at His hands." -Selected Messages, book 3,
p.200.

4. How did Zechariah describe Israel's disobedience to God? How did

the people respond when He called upon them to repent oftheir evil
ways? Zechariah 1:4-6; Jeremiah 35:15. Explain the similarity
between Jeremiah's, Zechariah's, and our time.

"In these days [God] has instituted no new plan to preserve the purity
of His people. As of old, He entreats the erring ones who profess His name
to repent and turn from their evil ways. Now, as then, by the mouth of His
chosen servants He predicts the dangers before them. He sounds the note
of warning and reproves sin just as faithfully as in the days of Jeremiah.
But the Israel of our time have the same temptations to scorn reproof and
hate counsel as had ancient Israel. They too often turn a deaf ear to the words
that God has given His servants for the benefit of those who profess the
truth. Though the Lord in mercy withholds for a time the retribution of their
sin, as in the days of Jeremiah, He will not always stay His hand, but will
visit iniquity with righteous judgment."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 165.

THE VISION OF HORSES February 4

5. What vision was given to Zechariah on the 24th day of the eleventh
month, Sebat, in the second year of King Darius? Zechariah 1:7-9.

6. Who did the angel say was symbolized by the men riding upon red,
speckled, and white horses? Zechariah 1: 10, 11.

"One part of the ministry of heavenly angels is to visit our world and
oversee the work of the Lord in the hands of His stewards. In every time of
necessity they minister to those who as co-workers with God are striving
to carry forward His work in the earth. These heavenly intelligences are
represented as desiring to look into the plan of redemption, and they re-
joice whenever any part of God's work prospers.
"Angels are interested in the spiritual welfare of all who are seeking to
restore God's moral image in man; and the earthly family are to connect
with the heavenly family in binding up the wounds and bruises that sin has
made. Angelic agencies, though invisible, are cooperating with visible hu-
man agencies, forming a relief association with men. The very angels who,
when Satan was seeking the supremacy, fought the battle in the heavenly
courts and triumphed on the side of God, the very angels who shouted for

joy over the creation of our world and its sinless inhabitants, the angels who
witnessed the fall of man and his expulsion from his Eden home-these very
heavenly messengers are most intensely interested to work in union with
the fallen, redeemed race for the salvation of human beings perishing in
their sins."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 456.

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD February 5

7. What question did the angel ask of the Lord concerning Jerusalem
and the cities ofJudah? Zechariah 1: 12. What prophetic time period
was confirmed by the angel? Jeremiah 29: 10.

"In vision Zechariah heard the angel of the Lord inquiring, '0 Lord of
hosts, how long wilt Thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of
Judah, against which Thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten
years? And the Lord answered the angel that talked with me,' Zechariah
declared, 'with good words and comfortable words.' "-Prophets and Kings,
p.580.
"Jeremiah declared that [the Jews] were to wear the yoke of servitude
for seventy years; and the captives that were already in the hands of the
king of Babylon, and the vessels of the Lord's house which had been taken,
were also to remain in Babylon till that time had elapsed. But at the end of
the seventy years God would deliver them from their captivity and would
punish their oppressors and bring into subjection the proud king of
Babylon."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 169.

8. What was Zechariah commanded by the angel of the Lord to cry

concerning Jerusalem? Zechariah 1:14, 16, 17. What did the Lord
say aboutthe heathen nations that had afflicted His people? Zechariah

FOUR HORNS AND FOUR CARPENTERS February 6
9. What did the prophet Zechariah see in his second vision? What
question did he put to the angel concerning the things which he had
seen? Zechariah 1:18,19.

"Zechariah then saw the powers that had 'scattered Judah, Israel, and
Jerusalem,' symbolized by four horns."-Prophets and Kings, p. 581.

10. How can we be inspired by the meaning of the vision given to

Zechariah? Zechariah 1:20, 21.

"Immediately afterward he saw four carpenters, representing the agen-

cies used by the Lord in restoring His people and the house of His wor-
ship."-Prophets and Kings, p. 581. .

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 31

"Human agencies are the hands of heavenly instrumentalities, for heav-
enly angels employ human hands in practical ministry. Human agencies as
hand helpers are to work out the knowledge and use the facilities of heav-
enly beings. By uniting with these powers that are omnipotent, we are ben-
efited by their higher education and experience. Thus as we become par-
takers of the divine nature, and separate selfishness from our lives, special
talents for helping one another are granted us. This is heaven's way of ad-
ministering saving power.
"Is there not something stimulating and inspiring in this thought, that
the human agent stands as the visible instrument to confer the blessings of
angelic agencies? As we are thus laborers together with God, the work bears
the inscription of the divine....
"With what joy heaven looks upon these blended influences! All heaven
is watching those agencies that are as the hand to work out the purpose of
God in the earth, thus doing the will of God in heaven. Such cooperation
accomplishes a work that brings honor and glory and majesty to God."-

THE MEASURING OF JERUSALEM February 9

1. In continuation of the previous vision, what new symbolism was

used to make clear the divine program for the restoration of the city
of Jerusalem? Zechariah 2: 1. What did the measuring of the city
signify? Zechariah 2:2.

"God had commanded that Jerusalem be rebuilt; the vision ofthe mea-
suring of the city was an assurance that He would give comfort and strength
to His afflicted ones, and fulfill to them the promises of His everlasting cov-
enant."-Prophets and Kings, p. 581.

2. What symbolic measuring is taking place in our days? Revelation

11:1.

"[God's] church is to be a temple built after the divine similitude, and

the angelic architect has brought his golden measuring rod from heaven,
that every stone may be hewed and squared by the divine measurement,
and polished to shine as an emblem of heaven, radiating in all directions
the bright, clear beams of the Sun of Righteousness."-Testimonies to Minis-
ters, p. 17.
"The golden measuring rod has not been placed in the hands of any fi-
nite man or any class of men, whatever their position or calling, but is in
the hand of the heavenly Architect. If men will not meddle with God's plan,
and wi11let Him work upon minds and characters, building them up according
to His plan, a work will be accomplished that will stand through the sever-
est of trials."-Ibid., p. 209.
"The grand judgment is taking place, and has been going on for some
time. Now the Lord says, Measure the temple and the worshipers thereof.

measuring you; when you are attending your household duties, when you

4. What promise of divine protection did the Lord give to the remnant of
Judah concerning Jerusalem? Zechariah 2:5. What promises in God's
word are a comfort to His remnant people today? Psalm 91: 1-12.

"[God's] protecting care, He declared, would be like 'a wall of fire round
about;' and through them His glory would be revealed to all the sons of men.
That which He was accomplishing for His people was to be known in all the
earth."-Prophets and Kings, p. 581.
"Could our eyes be opened, we should see forms of evil angels around
us, trying to invent some new way to annoy and destroy us. And we should
also see angels of God guarding us from their power; for God's watchful
eye is ever over Israel for good, and He will protect and save His people, if
they put their trust in Him."-Early Writings, p. 60.
"We must seek to separate sin from us, relying upon the merits of the
blood of Christ; and then in the day of affliction, when the enemy presses
us, we shall walk among the angels. They will be like a wall of fire about us,
and we shall one day walk with them in the city of God."-In Heavenly Places,

THE SECOND CALL February 11

5. Why was it necessary for the Lord to issue further calls for His
people to come out of Babylon? Of what is Babylon a symbol, and
how is this message also a call to God's remnant people today?
Zechariah 2:6,7; Revelation 18:4.

"Only a remnant had chosen to return from Babylon."-Prophets and Kings,

p.568.
" 'Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north,' was the mes-
sage given the scattered tribes of Israel who had become settled in many
lands far from their former home."-Ibid., p. 599.
"In Revelation 14 the first angel is followed by a second proclaiming;
'Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink
of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.'... The term 'Babylon' is de-
rived from 'Babel,' and signifies confusion. It is employed in Scripture to

designate the various forms of false or apostate religion. In Revelation 17
Babylon is represented as a woman-a figure which is used in the Bible as
the symbol of a church, a virtuous woman representing a pure church, a
vile woman an apostate church."-The Great Controversy, p. 381.

6. What prediction of this "calling out" had been made many years
before by the prophet Jeremiah? Jeremiah 50:4,5. Why did God call
out His people then and why are His people to come out of Babylon
now? 2 Corinthians 6:17,18; Revelation 18:2, 5.

"Christ's followers are required to come out from the world, and be sepa-
rate, and touch not the unclean, and they have the promise of being the sons
and daughters of the Most High, members of the royal family. But if the
conditions are not complied with on their part, they will not, cannot, real-
ize the fulfillment of the promise. A profession of Christianity is nothing in
the sight of God; but true, humble, willing obedience to His requirements
designates the children of His adoption, the recipients of His grace, the par-
takers of His great salvation."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 441.

GOD'S CARE FOR HIS PEOPLE February 12

7. What did the Lord say concerning those who oppressed His peo-
ple? How does He consider the faithful remnant? Zechariah 2:8;
Deuteronomy 32: 10. Whatis His intention regarding His church on
earth?

"Consider, my brethren and sisters, that the Lord has a people, a cho-
sen people, His church, to be His own, His own fortress, which He holds in
a sin-stricken, revolted world; and He intended that no authority should be
known in it, no laws be acknowledged by it, but His own."-Testimonies to
Ministers, p. 16.

8. On what condition do we have the promise of God's presence with

us? John 8:31,32; 14:15-18,23; 1 John 3:24.

"We cannot be half the Lord's and half the world's. We are not God's
people unless we are such entirely. Every weight, every besetting sin, must
be laid aside. God's watchmen will not cry, 'Peace, peace,' when God has
not spoken peace. The voice of the faithful watchmen will be heard: 'Go ye
out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be
ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.'
''The church cannot measure herself by the world nor by the opinion of
men nor by what she once was. Her faith and her position in the world as
they now are must be compared with what they would have been if her course

the balances of the sanctuary. If her moral character and spiritual state do
not correspond with the benefits and blessings God has conferred upon her,
she will be found wanting."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 83.

are not made any better by their connection with it. They themselves break
the terms of their election. Obedience to the commandments of God gives

"The work of redemption will be complete. In the place where sin

abounded, God's grace much more abounds. The earth itself, the very field
that Satan claims as his, is to be not only ransomed but exalted. Our little
world, under the curse of sin the one dark blot in His glorious creation, will

JOSHUA AND THE ANGEL February 16

1. In this fourth vision, who was standing before the Angel ofthe Lord,
and who was enraged by the work of restoration already begun?
Zechariah 3: 1.

"The steady advancement made by the builders of the temple greatly

discomfited and alarmed the hosts of evil. Satan determined to put forth
still further effort to weaken and discourage God's people by holding be-
fore them their imperfections of character. If those who had long suffered
because of transgression could again be induced to disregard God's com-
mandments, they would be brought once more under the bondage of sin."-
Prophets and Kings, p. 582.
"And now that this work of restoration had begun, and a remnant of Is-
rael had already returned to Judea, Satan was determined to frustrate the
carrying out of the divine purpose, and to this end he was seeking to move
upon the heathen nations to destroy them utterly."-Ibid., p. 583.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 37

been Satan's arguments against the remnant people of God in all
ages? Revelation 12:10.

"In vision the prophet beholds 'Joshua the high priest,' 'clothed with
filthy garments' (Zechariah 3: 1, 3), standing before the Angel of the Lord,
entreating God's mercy in behalf of his afflicted people. As he pleads for
the fulfillment of God's promises, Satan stands up boldly to resist him. He
points to the transgressions of Israel as a reason why they should not be
restored to the favor of God. He claims them as his prey, and demands that
they be given into his hands."-Prophets and Kings, p. 583.
"As Satan accused Joshua and his people, so in all ages he accuses those
who seek the mercy and favor of God. He is 'the accuser of our brethren, ...
which accused them before our God day and night' (Revelation 12:10). Over
every soul that is rescued from the power of evil, and whose name is regis-
tered in the Lamb's book of life, the controversy is repeated. Never is one
received into the family of God without exciting the determined resistance
of the enemy. But He who was the hope of Israel then, their defense, their
justification and redemption, is the hope of the church today."-Ibid., p. 585.

4. What command was given from the sanctuary as Joshua was stand-
ing before the Angel, confessing the sins of his people? Zechariah
3:4, 5. What does the change of raiment represent? Revelation
19:8.

"Through [Christ's] sacrifice, human beings may reach the high ideal
set before them, and hear at last the words, lYe are complete in him,' not
having your own righteousness, but the righteousness that He wrought out

faith in the coming Saviour that Joshua and his people had received par-
don. Through faith in Christ they had been restored to God's favor. By vir-
tue of His merits, if they walked in His ways and kept His statutes, they would

CHRIST OUR ONLY HOPE February 19

7. What fundamental truths of the plan of salvation were revealed to

Joshua? Zechariah 3:9; Isaiah 8: 14; Revelation 5:6.

"In his own strength, man cannot meet the charges of the enemy. In
sin-stained garments, confessing his guilt, he stands before God. But Jesus,
our Advocate, presents an effectual plea in behalf of all who by repentance
and faith have committed the keeping of their souls to Him. He pleads their
cause, and by the mighty arguments of Calvary, vanquishes their accuser.
His perfect obedience to God's law has given Him all power in heaven and
in earth, and He claims from His Father mercy and reconciliation for guilty
man."-Prophets and Kings, p. 586.

8. What is meant by the statement made in Zechariah 3:9, "I will

remove the iniquity ofthatland in one day"? Zechariah 13: 1; Jeremiah
50:20; Isaiah 64:9.

''Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ
shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God
without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be
purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and
their own diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil.
While the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins
of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be
a special work of purification, of putting away of sin, among God's people
upon earth."-The Great Controversy, p. 425.
"In the time of trouble, if the people of God had unconfessed sins to
appear before them while tortured with fear and anguish, they would be
overwhelmed; despair would cut off their faith, and they could not have con-
fidence to plead with God for deliverance. But while they have a deep sense
of their unworthiness, they have no concealed wrongs to reveal. Their sins
have gone beforehand to judgment and have been blotted out, and they cannot
bring them to remembrance."-Ibid., p. 620.

9. To whom and to what period of time does this vision of Joshua and
the Angel especially apply? Describe the experience of God's rem-
nant in the last days. Revelation 12: 17; 14: 12.

"Zechariah's vision of Joshua and the Angel applies with peculiar force
to the experience of God's people in the closing scenes of the great day of
atonement. The remnant church will then be brought into great trial and
distress. Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus
will feel the ire of the dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his
subjects; he has gained control even of many professing Christians. But here
is a little company who are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them
from the earth, his triumph would be complete. As he influenced the hea-
then nations to destroy Israel, so in the near future he will stir up the wicked
powers of earth to destroy the people of God. Men will be required to ren-
der obedience to human edicts in violation of the divine law." -Prophets and

(Zechariah 4:6). Jeremiah 9:23, 24; James 5: 16 (last part); 1 John
3:22.

'The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Chris-

tian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the
favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber
with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of
power."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 203.

A MOUNTAIN FLATTENED February 25

5. What did the Lord say about the great mountain which stood before
Zerubbabel? Zechariah 4:7. Why does the Lord permit trials to
come upon His people?

"Throughout the history of God's people great mountains of difficulty,

apparently insurmountable, have loomed up before those who were trying
to carry out the purposes of Heaven. Such obstacles are permitted by the
Lord as a test of faith. When we are hedged about on every side, this is the
time above all others to trust in God and in the power of His Spirit. The
exercise of a living faith means an increase of spiritual strength and the de-
velopment of an unfaltering trust. It is thus that the soul becomes a con-
quering power. Before the demand of faith, the obstacles placed by Satan
across the pathway of the Christian will disappear; for the powers of heaven
will come to his aid. 'Nothing shall be impossible unto you' (Matthew
17:20) ."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 594, 595.

6. What encouraging message was given to Zerubbabel regarding the

work of reconstruction? Name one main difference between God's
way of working and that ofthe world. Zechariah 4:8-10.

"Often men are tempted to falter before the perplexities and obstacles
that confront them. But if they will hold the beginning of their confidence
steadfast unto the end, God will make the way clear. Success will come to
them as they struggle against difficulties. Before the intrepid spirit and un-
wavering faith of a Zerubbabel, great mountains of difficulty will become a
plain."-Prophets and Kings, p. 595. ,

truth and righteousness. Sometimes He trains His workers by bringing to
them disappointment and apparent failure. It is His purpose that they shall
learn to master difficulties."-Ibid.

THE TWO OLIVE TREES February 26

7. Of which parts of the vision was Zechariah especially interested to

know the meaning? Zechariah 4: 11, 12. What should we know about
the oil from the two olive trees?

"The golden oil represents the Holy Spirit. With this oil God's minis-
ters are to be constantly supplied, that they, in turn, may impart it to the
church."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 188.
"From the two olive trees the golden oil flowing through the golden pipes
has been communicated to us. But those who do not cultivate the spirit and
habit of prayer cannot expect to receive the golden oil of goodness, patience,
long-suffering, gentleness, love."-Ibid., p. 511.

8. What explanation did the angel give to Zechariah concerning the two
olive trees? Zechariah 4:13,14.

"From the anointed ones that stand in God's presence the fullness of
divine light and love and power is imparted to His people, that they may
impart to others light and joy and refreshing. Those who are thus enriched
are to enrich others with the treasure of God's love."-Prophets and Kings,
p.594.
"These [two olive trees] empty themselves into the golden bowls, which
represent the hearts of the living messengers of God, who bear the Word
of the Lord to the people in warnings and entreaties. The Word itself must
be as represented, the golden oil, emptied from the two olive trees that stand
by the Lord of the whole earth. This is the baptism by the Holy Spirit with
fire. This will open the soul of unbelievers to conviction. The wants of the
soul can be met only by the working of the Holy Spirit of God."-The SDA
Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1180.
o Thursday
THE TWO WITNESSES February 27

9. What explanation is give~by the apostle John concerning the two

witnesses, and what do they represent? Revelation 11 :3,4.

"The two witnesses represent the Scriptures of the Old and the New
Testament. Both are important testimonies to the origin and perpetuity of
the law of God. Both are witnesses also to the plan of salvation. The types,
sacrifices, and prophecies of the Old Testament point forward to a Saviour

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 43

to come. The Gospels and Epistles of the New Testament tell of a Saviour
who has come in the exact manner foretold by type and prophecy."-The
Great Controversy, p. 267.

10. How does Christ describe His followers on earth? Matthew 5:14-
16; John 8: 12. Explain how this happens and its special impor-
tance today.

"From the two olive trees, the golden oil was emptied through golden
pipes into the bowl of the candlestick and thence into the golden lamps that
gave light to the sanctuary. So from the holy ones that stand in God's pres-
ence, His Spirit is imparted to human instrumentalities that are consecrated
to His service. The mission of the two anointed ones is to communicate light
and power to God's people. It is to receive blessing for us that they stand in
God's presence. As the olive trees empty themselves into the golden pipes,
so the heavenly messengers seek to communicate all that they receive from
God. The whole heavenly treasure awaits our demand and reception; and
as we receive the blessing, we in our turn are to impart it. Thus it is that
the holy lamps are fed, and the church becomes a light bearer in the world.
"This is the work that the Lord would have every soul prepared to do at
this time, when the four angels are holding the four winds, that they shall
not blow until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads. There is
no time now for self-pleasing. The lamps of the soul must be trimmed. They
must be supplied with the oil of grace."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 510.
"All may be light bearers to the world if they will. We are to sink self
out of sight in Jesus. We are to receive the word of the Lord in counsel and
instruction, and gladly communicate it."-Ibid., p. 511.

SPECIAL MISSION OFFERING
for a Church in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa, covering a grassy
area of about 150,820 square miles (390,622 square kilometers). A distinc-
tive local treasure found here is the magnificent Victoria Falls, one of the
scenic wonders of the world.
Governed by British colonial rule for many years as Rhodesia, Zimba-
bwe gained its national independence in 1980. Although this newly acquired
freedom brought great joy to the majority of the citizens, the withdrawal of
British technology and skilled laborers plummeted the new country into a
difficult struggle to establish commercial industrialization.
With a population of 11.5 million, traditionally, the majority have adhered
to native religions, especially Animism. Over the last several decades, how-
ever, mission schools have exercised some influence, mixing Christianity
and traditional beliefs.
It was in 1926 that the message of reformation came to Zimbabwe. To-
day, the SDA Reform Movement has a good number of church members in
the city of Bulawayo and many isolated members in various parts of the coun-
try. As the work has progressed, the need has arisen for a proper facility
for worship. In Bulawayo, construction has already begun on a building to
accommodate 300 worshipers, but the project still lacks roofing material,
windows, and furnishings.
Sacrifices are being made locally, but in order to complete the project,
we appeal for your generous help. To some degree, a proper structure which
rightly represents the noble character of our message is a sermon in itself.
"Some may ask, Why does Sister White always use the words, 'plain, neat,
and substantial,' when speaking of buildings? It is because I wish our build-
ings to represent the perfection God requires of His people."-Evangelism,
p. 378. "If wisdom and sanctified judgment and skillful generalship are mani-
fested by us in building up the interests of our Redeemer's kingdom, we
shall do all in our power to assure the people of the stability of our work.
Humble sanctuaries will be erected where those who accept the truth may
find a place to worship God according to the dictates of their conscience."-
Ibid., pp. 376, 377.
Dear brethren, when the Special Mission Offering is gathered on Sab-
bath, March 1, 1997, please remember this need with a generous gift. May
the Lord bless each giver!

together with God for the blessing of humanity." -The Acts o/the Apostles,

DELIVERANCE FROM SIN March 2

1. What can we learn from the sixth vision shown to Zechariah, illus-
trating the heinous nature of violating God's holy law? Zechariah
5:1-4.

"Against every evildoer God's law utters condemnation. He may disre-

gard that voice, he may seek to drown its warning, but in vain. It follows
him. It makes itself heard. It destroys his peace. If unheeded, it pursues
him to the grave. It bears witness against him at the judgment. A quench-
less fire, it consumes at last soul and body."-Education, pp. 144, 145.

2. Describe Zechariah's seventh vision depicting the heavy burden of

sin. Zechariah 5:5-9. Whereto should those be removed who re-
fused to repent? Zechariah 5:10,11 (compare Genesis 11:1-4,9).
How can we escape from the iniquity so prevalent today? Hebrews
12:1-3.

"The only begotten Son of God was numbered with the transgressors,
that human beings might not perish, but have everlasting life. Life eternal
will be their inheritance, if they will consent to humble their proud heart
and become partakers of His suffering. He patiently endured shame and
mockery and derision that He might save every sinful human being who
would lay hold of Him by living faith....
"The salvation of human beings means much more than many realize.
It means that we are to choose God's way rather than our own. The Lord
cannot save men while they refuse to humble themselves under the reproofs

and warnings that He sends, strenuously asserting their own will, and fol-
lowing their own course of action."-The Upward Look, p. 134.
"It is not enough merely to acknowledge Christ. We must follow where
He leads the way. His grace is sufficient. He suffered for us, and He has left
us an example, that we should follow.... The present is our time of prov-
ing. The experience necessary in order to gain the crown of life will bring
us far greater crucifixion of self than we have hitherto thought possible."-

APPEAL AND ENCOURAGEMENT March 3

3. With what words did the Lord remind Zechariah of the reason for
Israel's punishment, and appeal to them to do right, instead of
fasting in vain? Zechariah 7:9-14.

4. How did God manifest His deep regard for His chosen people?
Whom did He choose to fulfill His Word, and how? Zechariah 8: 1-3;
6:15; Ezra 7:11-18.

"About seventy years after the return of the first company of exiles un-
der Zerubbabel and Joshua, Artaxerxes Longimanus came to the throne of
Medo-Persia. The name of this king is connected with sacred history by a
series of remarkable providences. It was during his reign that Ezra and
Nehemiah lived and labored. He is the one who in 457 B.C. issued the third
and final decree for the restoration of Jerusalem. His reign saw the return
of a company of Jews under Ezra, the completion of the walls of Jerusalem
by Nehemiah and his associates, the reorganization of the temple services,
and the great religious reformations instituted by Ezra and Nehemiah. During
his long rule he often showed favor to God's people, and in his trusted and
well-beloved Jewish friends, Ezra and Nehemiah, he recognized men of God's
appointment, raised up for a special work."-Prophets and Kings, p. 607.
"The decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus for the restoring and building
of Jerusalem ... is remarkable for its expressions regarding the God of
heaven, for its recognition of the attainments of Ezra, and for the liberality
of the grants made to the remnant people of God.~'-Ibid., p. 610.

A GLORIOUS FULFILLMENT March 4

5. Describe the marvelous restoration o~the burned city ofJerusalem.

Zechariah 8:4-6. How had Ezekiel predicted the restoration many
years before? Ezekiel 36:9-11, 33-36.

6. What spiritual improvement was expected of God's people restored

to their homeland? Zechariah 8:7, 8. When and how could these
promised blessings have been fulfilled? Isaiah 65: 1 7-23.

48 Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997

"In the issuing of this decree by Artaxerxes, God's providence was mani-
fest. Some discerned this and gladly took advantage of the privilege of re-
turning under circumstances so favorable. A general place of meeting was
named, and at the appointed time those who were desirous of going to Jerusa-
lem assembled for the long journey."-Prophets and Kings, p. 612.
"This promise of blessing should have met fulfillment in large measure
during the centuries following the return of the Israelites from the lands of
their captivity. It was God's design that the whole earth be prepared for the
first advent of Christ, even as today the way is preparing for His second com-
ing."-Ibid., pp. 703, 704.

CONDITIONS NECESSARY March 5

7. With what words did the Lord promise prosperity to His remnant
people? Zechariah 8:9-12. What condition was attached, and howis
this a lesson for us? Psalm 85:8.

"[Zechariah 8:3,7,8 quoted.] These promises were conditional on obe-

dience. The sins that had characterized the Israelites prior to the captivity,
were not to be repeated."-Prophets and Kings, p. 704.
"The work of which the prophet Zechariah writes is a type of the spiri-
tual restoration to be wrought for Israel before the end of time."-The SDA
Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1180.

8. How only could the Jews continue to enjoy God's favor? Zechariah
8: 13-1 7. Explain how this applies to us today.

"By the Babylonish captivity the Israelites were effectually cured of the
worship of graven images. Mer their return, they gave much attention to
religious instruction and to the study of that which had been written in the
book of the law and in the prophets concerning the worship of the true God.
The restoration of the temple enabled them to carry out fully the ritual ser-
vices of the sanctuary. Under the leadership of Zerubbabel, of Ezra, and of
Nehemiah they repeatedly covenanted to keep all the commandments and
ordinances of Jehovah."-Prophets and Kings, p. 705.
"As a people, we must prepare the way of the ·Lord, under the overrul-
ing guidance of the Holy Spirit, for the spread of the gospel in its purity....
"Those who preach the truth will strive to demonstrate the truth by a
well-ordered life and godly conversation. And as they do this, they will be-
come powerful in advocating the truth and in giving it the sure application
that God has given it. ...
"The call is to go forth, 'Son, go labor today in My vineyard.' As this
call is obeyed, the message that means so much to the dwellers on the earth,
will be heard and understood. Men will know what is truth. Onward, and
still onward, will the work advance. And marked events of Providence will
be seen and recognized, in judgments and in blessings."-This Day With God,

days? Zechariah 8:20-23. Why did many of God's promises to
ancient Israel remain unfulfilled? Jeremiah 18:9, 10. Whatapplica-
tion does God's original plan have today?

"There will be many converted from among the Jews, and these con-
verts will aid in preparing the way of the Lord, and making straight in the
desert a highway for our God. Converted Jews are to have an important
part to act in the great preparations to be made in the future to receive Christ,
our Prince. A nation shall be born in a day. How? By men whom God has
appointed being converted to the truth. There will be seen 'first the blade,

THE PLAN OF REDEMPTION March 9

1. When was the plan of redemption first announced to man, and what
was its twofold purpose? Genesis 3: 15. Who and what would this
plan vindicate before the whole universe? Isaiah 42:21; John 12:32.

"To man the first intimation of redemption was communicated in the

sentence pronounced upon Satan in the garden.... [Genesis 3:15 quoted.]
This sentence, uttered in the hearing of our first parents, was to them a prom-
ise. While it foretold war between man and Satan, it declared that the power
of the great adversary would finally be broken."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp.
65,66.
"But the plan of redemption had a yet broader and deeper purpose than
the salvation of man. It was not for this alone that Christ came to the earth;
it was not merely that the inhabitants of this little world might regard the
law of God as it should be regarded; but it was to vindicate the character of
God before the universe. To this result of his great sacrifice-its influence
upon the intelligences of other worlds, as well as upon man-the Saviour
looked forward .... The act of Christ in dying for the salvation of man would
not only make heaven accessible to men, but before all the universe it would
justify God and His Son in their dealing with the rebellion of Satan. It would
establish the perpetuity of the law of God and would reveal the nature and
the results of sin."-Ibid., pp. 68, 69.

2. What has been the Christian's hope throughout the ages? Isaiah
59:16,17; Romans 5:1, 2,6-10,17-21; 6:18, 23 (last part).

"Through the long centuries of 'trouble and darkness' and 'dimness of

anguish' marking the history of mankind from the day our first parents lost

their Eden home, to the time the Son of God appeared as the Saviour of
sinners, the hope of the fallen race was centered in the coming of a Deliv-
erer to free men and women from the bondage of sin and the grave."-Prophets
and Kings, p. 681.
"The Son of God, heaven's glorious Commander, was touched with pity
for the fallen race. His heart was moved with infinite compassion as the woes
of the lost world rose up before Him. But divine love had conceived a plan
whereby man might be redeemed. The broken law of God demanded the
life of the sinner. In all the universe there was but one who could, in behalf
of man, satisfy its claims. Since the divine law is as sacred as God Himself,
only one equal with God cQuld make atonement for its transgression. None
but Christ could redeem fallen man from the curse of the law and bring him
again into harmony with Heaven. Christ would take upon Himself the guilt
and shame of sin-sin so offensive to a holy God that it must separate the
Father and His Son. Christ would reach to the depths of misery to rescue
the ruined race."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 63.

GOD'S PROMISE TO ABRAHAM March 10

3. What wonderful promise did God make to Abraham regarding the

coming of the Messiah? Genesis 12:2, 3; 22:18. Who would be
blessed through the seed of Abraham? Acts 3:25, 26; Galatians
3:26.

"The hope of Israel was embodied in the promise made at the time of
the call of Abraham, and afterward repeated again and again to his poster-
ity, 'In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.' As the purpose of God
for the redemption of the race was unfolded to Abraham, the Sun of Righ-
teousness shone upon his heart, and his darkness was scattered. And when,
at last, the Saviour Himself walked and talked among the sons of men, He
bore witness to the Jews of the patriarch's bright hope of deliverance through
the coming of a Redeemer."-Prophets and Kings, p. 683.

4. Through what experience did God reveal to Abraham more fully the
plan of salvation and the great sacrifice of God in yielding up His
only begotten Son? Genesis 22: 1, 2, 8; Hebrews 11: 17-19.

"It was to impress Abraham's mind with the reality of the gospel, as well
as to test his faith, that God commanded him to slay his son. The agony
which he endured during the dark days of that fearful trial was permitted
that he might understand from his own experience something of the great-
ness of the sacrifice made by the infinite God for man's redemption. No other
test could have caused Abraham such torture of soul as did the offering of
his son. God gave His Son to a death of agony and shame. The angels who
witnessed the humiliation and soul anguish of the Son of God were not per-
mitted to interpose, as in the case of Isaac. There was no voice to cry, 'It is

5. What prophetic declaration was made by Jacob concerning the

coming of Christ from the tribe ofJudah? Genesis 49: 10. What types
and shadows pointed to Christ since the days of the patriarchs?

"In patriarchal times the sacrificial offerings connected with divine wor-
ship constituted a perpetual reminder of the coming of a Saviour, and thus
it was with the entire ritual of the sanctuary services throughout Israel's
history. In the ministration of the tabernacle, and of the temple that after-
ward took its place, the people were taught each day, by means of types
and shadows, the great truths relative to the advent of Christ as Redeemer,
Priest, and King; and once each year their minds were carried forward to
the closing events of the great controversy between Christ and Satan, the
final purification of the universe from sin and sinners."-Prophets and Kings,
pp. 684, 685.

6. What prophecy uttered by Balaam refers to the coming of Christ?

Numbers 24:17-19.

10. What message is to be proclaimed at this time? Daniel 2:44; 7:27;

Matthew 24:33; 25:31, 34.

"As the message of Christ's first advent announced the kingdom of His
grace, so the message of His second advent announces the kingdom of His
glory. And the second message, like the first, is based on the prophecies.
The words of the angel to Daniel relating to the last days were to be under-
stood in the time of the end."- The Desire ofAges, p. 234.

to claim the Lord's promise; they talk about Christ and about the Holy Spirit,
yet receive no benefit. They do not surrender the soul to be guided and con-
trolled by the divine agencies. We cannot use the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is
to use us."-The Desire ofAges, p. 672. [Author's italics.]

4. Describe the specific work of the Holy Spirit? John 16:7, 8, 13 (first
part). What is the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Galatians 5:22, 23.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 55

"The Lord will teach us our duty just as willingly as He will teach some-
body else. If we come to Him in faith, He will speak His mysteries to us
personally. Our hearts will often burn within us as One draws nigh to com-
mune with us as He did with Enoch. Those who decide to do nothing in any
line that will displease God, will know, after presenting their case before
Him, just what course to pursue. And they will receive not only wisdom,
but strength. Power for obedience, for service, will be imparted to them,
as Christ has promised."-The Desire 0/Ages, p. 668.
"Through the Spirit God works in His people 'to will and to do of His
good pleasure' (Philippians 2:13). But many will not submit to this. They
want to manage themselves. This is why they do not receive the heavenly
gift. Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His guidance
and grace, is the Spirit given. The power of God awaits their demand and
reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other bless-
ings in its train."-Ibid., p. 672.

THE "FORMER RAIN" March 18

5. Describe the bestowal of the promised gift upon the disciples in the
early days of the church. Acts 1:8, 13, 14; 2: 1-4.

"[The first] disciples prepared themselves for their work. Before the
day of Pentecost they met together, and put away all differences. They were
of one accord. They believed Christ's promise that the blessing would be
given, and they prayed in faith. They did not ask for a blessing for them-
selves merely; they were weighted with the burden for the salvation of
souls."-The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 827.
"The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the begin-
ning of the early, or former, rain, and glorious was the result."-The Acts 0/
the Apostles, pp. 54, 55.

6. What was the result of the outpouring of the "former rain" in the
days of the apostles? Acts 2:37-41; 4:4; 5:14.

"The glad tidings of a risen Saviour were carried to the uttermost parts
of the inhabited world. As the disciples proclaimed the message of redeeming
grace, hearts yielded to the power of this message. The church beheld con-
verts flocking to her from all directions. Backsliders were reconverted. Sin-
ners united with believers in seeking the pearl of great price. Some who
had been the bitterest opponents of the gospel became its champions."-

IN THE LAST DAYS March 19

7. What evidence shows that the promise of God through Joel is to have
a second and complete fulfillment in our days? Acts 2: 16-18.

56 Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997

"God has ... promised to give visions in the ((last days"; not for a new
rule of faith, but for the comfort of His people, and to correct those who err
from Bible truth." -Early Writings, p. 78. [Author's italics.]
"If this prophecy of Joel [2:28,29] met a partial fulfillment in the days
of the apostles, we are living in a time when it is to be even more evidently
manifest to the people of God. He will so bestow His Spirit upon His people
that they will become a light amid the moral darkness; and great light will
be reflected in all parts of the world. 0 that our faith might be increased,
that the Lord might work mightily with His people."-The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1175.
"As the 'former rain' was given, in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at
the opening of the gospel, to cause the upspringing of the precious seed,
so the 'latter rain' will be given at its close for the ripening of the harvest."-
The Great Controversy, p. 611.

8. What did Hosea and Zechariah prophesy with reference to God's

promise? Hosea 6:1-3; Zechariah 10:1. How only can we be ben-
efited by His promise?

"The latter rain, ripening earth's harvest, represents the spiritual grace
that prepares the church for the coming of the Son of man. But unless the
former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring
up. Unless the early showers have done their work, the latter rain can bring
no seed to perfection."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 506.
"Many have in a great measure failed to receive the former rain. They
have not obtained all the benefits that God has thus provided for them. They
expect that the lack will be supplied by the latter rain. When the richest
abundance of grace shall be bestowed, they intend to open their hearts to
receive it. They are making a terrible mistake. The work that God has be-
gun in the human heart in giving His light and knowledge must be continu-
ally going forward. Every individual must realize his own necessity. The
heart must be emptied of every defilement, and cleansed for the indwell-
ing of the Spirit."-Ibid., p. 507.

THE LATTER RAIN March 20

9. What appeal did the apostle Peter direct to his contemporaries, and
also to this last generation, having in view the outpouring of the
latter rain in our days? Acts 3: 19. What vital truth should we realize
in order to obtain this blessing?

"It was by the confession and forsaking of sin, by earnest prayer and
consecration of themselves to God, that the early disciples prepared for the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. The same work, only
in greater degree, must be done now. Then the human agent had only to
ask for the blessing, and wait for the Lord to perfect the work concerning

him. It is God who began the work, and He will finish His work, making
man complete in Jesus Christ."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 507.
"Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters
have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in
our characters, to cleanse the soul of every defilement. Then the latter rain
will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pente-
cost."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 214.

10. What event is to take place soon after the latter rain? Acts 3:20.

Preparing for Heavenly Jerusalem
"The Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be
one Lord. . . . And men shall dwell in [Jerusalem], and there shall be
no more utter destruction; butJerusalem shall be safely inhabited" (Zechariah
14:9, 11).

"There is the New Jerusalem, the metropolis of the glorified new earth,
'a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of
thy God.' "-The Great Controversy, p. 676.

EARTHLY JERUSALEM March 23

1. How did the professed people of God, sometimes symbolized by the

"holy city," receive Christ at His first advent? Matthew 23:37; John
1:11.

"For more than a thousand years the Jewish people had awaited the
Saviour's coming. Upon this event they had rested their brightest hopes.
In song and prophecy, in temple rite and household prayer, they had en-
shrined His name. And yet at His coming they knew Him not."-The Desire
ofAges, p. 27.

2. According to several prophecies, what would happen to the Jewish

people, the city ofJerusalem, and the temple? DanieI9:26; Matthew
22:7; 24:1, 2; Luke 19:43,44.

"All the predictions given by Christ concerning the destruction ofJerusa-

lem were fulfilled to the letter."-The Great Controversy, p. 29.
"Both the city and the temple were razed to their foundations, and the
ground upon which the holy house had stood was 'plowed like a field'
aeremiah 26:18). In the siege and the slaughter that followed, more than a
million of the people perished; the survivors were carried away as captives,
sold as slaves, dragged to Rome to grace the conqueror's triumph, thrown
to wild beasts in the amphitheaters, or scattered as homeless wanderers
throughout the earth."-Ibid., p. 35.

WARNINGS HEEDED-WARNINGS REJECTED March 24

3. How could the Jews have averted the destruction? Luke 3:8.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997 59

"If Jerusalem had known what it was her privilege to know, and had
heeded the light which Heaven had sent her, she might have stood forth in
the pride of prosperity, the queen of kingdoms, free in the strength of her
God-given power. There would have been no armed soldiers standing at her
gates, no Roman banners waving from her walls. The glorious destiny that
might have blessed Jerusalem had she accepted her Redeemer rose before
the Son of God. He saw that she might through Him have been healed of
her grievous malady, liberated from bondage, and established as the mighty
metropolis of the earth. From her walls the dove of peace would have gone
forth to all nations. She would have been the world's diadem of glory."-
The Desire ofAges, p. 577.

4. What warning did Christ give to His followers concerning the com-
ing destruction, and how did they carry out His instructions? Mat-
thew 24: 15-20.

"Not one Christian perished in the destruction of Jerusalem. Christ had

given His disciples warning, and all who believed His words watched for
the promised sign.... After the Romans under Cestius had surrounded the
city, they unexpectedly abandoned the siege when everything seemed fa-
vorable for an immediate attack. The besieged, despairing of successful re-
sistance, were on the point of surrender, when the Roman general withdrew
his forces without the least apparent reason. But God's merciful providence
was directing events for the good of His own people. The promised sign
had been given to the waiting Christians, and now an opportunity was of-
fered for all who would, to obey the Saviour's warning. Events were so over-
ruled that neither Jews nor Romans should hinder the flight of the Chris-
tians. Upon the retreat of Cestius, the Jews, sallying from Jerusalem, pur-
sued after his retiring army; and while both forces were thus fully engaged,
the Christians had an opportunity to leave the city."-The Great Controversy,
p.30.

SYMBOLIC JERUSALEM AND MODERN ISRAEL March 25

5. What was the fate of the "holy city," that is, the true people of God,
during the time of papal persecution (A.D. 538-1798)? Daniel
7:25; Revelation 11:2 (last part); 17:6.

"In their secret councils Satan and his angels controlled the minds of
evil men, while unseen in the midst stood an angel of God, taking the fear-
ful record of their iniquitous decrees and writing the history of deeds too
horrible to appear to human eyes. 'Babylon the great' was 'drunken with
the blood of the saints.' The mangled forms of millions of martyrs cried to
God for vengeance upon that apostate power."- The Great Controversy, pp. 59, 60.

6. What is written about modern Israel and symbolic Jerusalem in

these last days? Ezekiel 9: 1-8; Romans 9:27. In what sense will the

60 Sabbath Bible Lessons, January - March 1997

predicted destruction have a second application, and what hope is
there for a little "remnant"? Zechariah 14: 1, 2.

"Who can truthfully say: 'Our gold is tried in the fire; our garments are
unspotted by the world'? I saw our Instructor pointing to the garments of
so-called righteousness. Stripping them off, He laid bare the defilement be-
neath. Then He said to me: 'Can you not see how they have pretentiously
covered up their defilement and rottenness of character? "How is the faith-
ful city become an harlot!" My Father's house is made a house of merchan-
dise, a place whence the divine presence and glory have departed!' "-Tes-
timonies, vol. 8, p. 250.
"Some who had been dishonoring God repented and humbled their
hearts before Him. But the glory of the Lord had departed from Israel; al-
though many still continued the forms of religion, His power and presence
were lacking."-Ibid., vol. 5, p. 210.
"[Ezekiel 9:5, 6 quoted.] Here we see that the church-the Lord's sanc-
tuary-was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God. The ancient men,
those to whom God had given great light and who had stood as guardians
of the spiritual interests of the people, had betrayed their trust." -Ibid.,
p.211.
"The seal of the living God is upon His people. This small remnant, un-
able to defend themselves in the deadly conflict with the powers of earth
that are marshaled by the dragon host, make God their defense."-Ibid.,

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE WICKED March 26

7. How does the Bible depict the final destruction of the enemies of
God in the last days? Zechariah 14: 12, 13. What will soon happen to
spiritual Babylon? Revelation 18:7,8,16,18.

"When [Christ] leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants

of the earth.... The wicked have passed the boundary of their probation;
the Spirit of God, persistently resisted, has been at last withdrawn.
Unsheltered by divine grace, they have no protection from the wicked one.
Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble.
As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human pas-
sion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be in-
volved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old."-
The Great Controversy, p. 614.
"[Babylon] has filled up the measure of her iniquity; her time has come;
she is ripe for destruction."-Ibid., p. 653.

the apostle Paul? Isaiah 24:1-6; 1 Thessalonians 5:2,3.

10. Where will the New Jerusalem, with Christ and the redeemed, be
established at the end of the millenium? Zechariah 14:4, 9. De-
scribe the final end of the wicked. Revelation 20:7-9. What sole
reminder of this earth will remain throughout eternity? Zechariah
13:6.

"At the close of the thousand years, Christ again returns to the earth.
He is accompanied by the host of the redeemed and attended by a retinue
of angels. As He descends in terrific majesty He bids the wicked dead arise
to receive their doom."-The Great Controversy, p. 662.
"In the cleansing flames the wicked are at last destroyed, root and
branch-Satan the root, his followers the branches. The full penalty of the
law has been visited; the demands of justice have been met; and heaven and
earth, beholding, declare the righteousness of]ehovah."-Ibid., p. 673.
"One reminder alone remains: Our Redeemer will ever bear the marks
of His crucifixion. Upon His wounded head, upon His side, His hands and
feet, are the only traces of the cruel work that sin has wrought. Says the
prophet, beholding Christ in His glory: 'He had bright beams coming out
of His side: and there was the hiding of His power' (Habbakkuk 3:4, mar-
gin). That pierced side whence flowed the crimson stream that reconciled
man to God-there is the Saviour's glory, there 'the hiding of His power.'
'Mighty to save,' through the sacrifice of redemption, He was therefore strong
to execute justice upon them that despised God's mercy. And the tokens of
His humiliation are His highest honor; through the eternal ages the wounds
of Calvary will show forth His praise and declare His power."-Ibid., p. 674.

Where Is the Holy Land?
"How many there are who feel that it would be a good thing to tread
the soil of old Jerusalem, and that their faith would be greatly strengthened
by visiting the scenes of the Saviour's life and death! But old Jerusalem will
never be a sacred place until it is cleansed by the refining fire from heaven.
The darkest blot of guilt rests upon the city that refused the light of Christ.
Do we want to walk in the footsteps ofJesus? We need not seek out the paths
in Nazareth, Bethany, and Jerusalem. We shall find the footprints of Jesus
by the sickbed, by the side of suffering humanity, in the hovels of the pov-
erty-stricken and distressed. We may walk in these footsteps, comforting
the suffering, speaking words of hope and comfort to the despondent. Do-
ing as Jesus did when He was upon earth, we shall walk in His blessed steps.
Jesus said, 'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take
up his cross daily, and follow me.' When the sin-cursed earth is purified from
every stain of sin; when the Mount of Olives is rent asunder, and becomes
an immense plain; when the holy city of God descends upon it-the land
that is now called the Holy Land will indeed become holy. But God's cause
and work will not be advanced by making pilgrimages to Jerusalem. The
curse of God is upon Jerusalem for the rejection and crucifixion of His only
begotten Son."-The Review and Herald, June 9,1896.
"I have not one word of encouragement for any person, neither have I
money to impart to any person, to visit Jerusalem. As it now is, it would be
a picture I would never wish to hang in memory's hall. Brethren, do you
believe that you will soon see Jesus? Then do not needlessly expend means
that is of so great value to save precious souls; they need never get a sight
of Jerusalem under the curse, but with inspired words you can point them
to the New Jerusalem, to Jesus the Mediator of the better covenant, who
ever liveth to make intercession for us, and whose intercession is wholly
efficacious in our behalf. I know that Christ looks with sadness upon those
who are searching for the places He passed over while in the flesh, but who
fail to recognize Him as a living Saviour, on any ground, in any place. He
says, 'Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.' Men may search
in vain for the footprints of Christ in Jerusalem. I care more for where He
is now, in heaven, and for what He is doing in my behalf.
"Give to Jesus your devotion where He is in the heavenly sanctuary;
seek for the Holy Spirit as His representative wherever His people bow to
worship Him. It becomes us to know Jesus by an experimental knowledge,
as a personal Saviour. We should be gathering up every ray of divine light,
not looking to old Jerusalem where Christ was once, but to the New Jerusalem
where He is now. Let us be gathering from the tree of life that God has planted,
leaves that shall be for the healing of the nations, and fruit, precious, life-
giving fruit as food to the soul."-The Paulson Collection, p. 138.
