Experiment Procedure

1. Make sure safety shoes and jacket is wore as the cutting process may produce spark.
2. Computer Aided Design (CAD) software is used which is CATIA to make 2-D
drawing for plasma cutting process.
3. Drafting is selected and A4 ISO format is set for the drawing process.
4. 2-D product drawing is produced as desired shape.
5. Then, the drawing is saved in dxf. file and stored in pendrive in order to make sure
CNC plasma cutting machine can read the drawing.
6. Next, the pendrive with the drawing file is attached to the computer to produce G-
code using software for the CNC plasma machine. The pendrive is detached after
the G-code is produced.
7. A flat metal plate is placed on the cutting slot.
8. The pendrive is then attached again to the CNC plasma machine. The G-code file
for the drawing is then selected.
9. Cutting process started as the machine initially trace the drawing product’s shape.
So, the plasma cutter can be suitably positioned on the flat metal plate.
10. After that, cutting phase is conducted by the CNC plasma machine and wait for the
cutting process is completed.
11. When the cutting process is completed, use the hammer to knock the product to
detach it the metal plate. Avoid direct contact with the metal plate as its temperature
is high.
12. Lastly, the product is cooled first using water and finishing process is applied as the
hammer is used to clean the cutting scrap around the edge of the product.
Result and analysis

shape)

Figure2: CNC plasma cutting

process
Figure 1, 2 and 3 above shows the process of CNC plasma cutting. Mainly, figure 1 shows
drawing that has shape clearly like a sprocket. After the cutting process, the product in figure 3
above shows that this process has achieved its goal when the shape of the product has the same
shape with the desired 2-D drawing. The number of serration in the drawing match the serration
number on the product which is they both have 23 serration. They also consist of same number of
hole which is five holes rotate circularly around one big hole in the middle. Although the product
have some rough edge at the hole, further finishing process like grinding or others will help the
product match exactly like the 2-D drawing sprocket shape.
