1. Define your course Learning Outcome 3 (SLO 3).

Formulate geographic research questions

and hypothesis to evaluate solutions to complex real world physical geography problems.

For this reflection I decide to look back on my question 7 of the Plate Tectonic Reading quiz. For
this question, I had to match the land and ocean formation with the type of plate boundary that
would create them. For this problem I had to think and formulate my thoughts. This was the
only question on the quiz where I took most my time on. I had to return to the reading and read
it in more depth. In the end I got the majority of the answer correct except for two because
found no information on that subject. I probably should have did more research or read the
text once again till I fully understood the material.

2. What geographic research question(s) (an answerable scientific question) and hypothesis
(proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further
investigation) did you formulate (produce, create, or develop) in this class?

The research question I formulated was which formation formed what kind of plate boundaries.
The next questions I came up with are what are the earth’s deepest ocean trenches. Ocean
ridges. Rift valleys. San Andreas Fault, and so forth. I went back into the reading, but found
barely any information in this topic. I then went on the net and read up on these type of land
formations and that gave me a better idea on how to approach the question. I came up with
another question and that was “what influences convergence and divergence” and “what are
the differences between them”. As I answered those questions I was ready to finish the quiz.

3. What complex real world physical geography problem(s) did you evaluate (to judge or
calculate the quality of)?

After solving the question to the best of my abilities, even if I didn’t get all the answer correctly,
I was able to know my mistake and understand the concepts of divergent, convergence and
transforming boundaries. Now I know which type of plate boundaries would create and form
land, mountains and oceans. With this knowledge now, I can tell educate others on this topic
and might even further my studies on these in the near future if it peaks my interest.
