Terms and Definitions

1. Anterior fontanel- “soft spot”, area between frontal and parietal bones that has not yet

ossified.

2. Cephalohematoma- bleeding that occurs under a cranial bone, shows up as a lump on an

infant’s head.

3. Colic- when a healthy baby cries an extreme amount.

4. Congenital- something a baby is born with.

5. Deciduous teeth- a baby’s first teeth

6. Extrusion reflex- when a baby pushes solids out of his/her mouth, until 4 months old.

7. Infant- children from one month to one year old

8. Moro reflex- when a baby moves his/her limbs after being startled.

9. Pediatrics- branch of medicine that involves diagnosing and treating diseases in children.

10. Vaccine- a dead virus that is injected to make the body produce the antibodies required to

fight the disease, making the person immune to that disease.
