Nirma University Institute of Technology Semester End Examination (RPR), December 2017 B.Tech in Computer Engineering, Semester IV (CE401 DATA COMMUNICATION, Roll/ Supervisor's initial Exam No with date ‘Time : 3 Hours Max Marks: 100 Instructions: i) Attempt all questions. ii) Figures to the right indicate full marks. iii) Draw neat sketches wherever necessary. iv) Assume suitable data wherever necessary and specify them. Q.1 Answer the following questions. [16] ‘A Discuss AM, FM and PM with proper signal representations. [06] B You are setting up a network for a small company, which has seven [04] computers, two printers, and one scanner that need to be connected. All equipment are located on one floor in a relatively small area. Costs must be kept at a minimum, and the network doesn’t need to be especially fast. Which transmission medium would you recommend and why? Justify your answer. © We want to transmit 1000 characters with each character encoded as 8 [04] bits. i, Find the number of transmitted bits for synchronous transmission. ii, Find the number of transmitted bits for asynchronous transmission and Find the redundancy percent in each case. D A system has an n-layer protocol hierarchy, Applications generate [02] messages of length M bytes. At each of the layers, an h-byte header is added. What fraction of the network bandwidth is filled with headers? Q.2 Answer the following questions. 3} ‘A Data are stored on 1.44 Mbyte floppy diskettes that weight 30gm each. [06] Suppose that a train carries 10* kg of these floppies at a speed of 1000 km/hrs over a distance of 5000 km. What is the data transmission rate in bits per second of this system? OR A You and your friends live at Ahmedabad and have collected 1,000 [06] Gigabytes worth of movies on computers at your hostel. Your friend staying at London wants your movie collection. You have two options: i. Send the data over the Internet to your friend’s computer in London. ‘The data rate for transmitting information across the Internet from your hostel is 1Mbps. Page 1 of3 CEA401 Data Communication ii, Copy the data over to a set of disks, which you can do at 100 Megabytes per second. Then rely on the courier Service to send the disks by courier to London, which takes 7 days to deliver it Which of these two options (i or ii) is faster? And by how much? Justify your answer. For the given bit stream 11100011011, apply the following line encoding techniques with signal representation: i. Differential Manchester With an appropriate example and diagram, discuss Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) technique. Answer the following questions. Given a bit string 101110101, show with a diagram how it can be encoded. on to a sine wave analog signal (carrier signal) using Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) and Phase Shift Keying (PSK). Which one will be more susceptible to noise? Justify your answer. oR Draw the constellation diagram for the following: i. ASK, with peak amplitude values of 2 and 4 ii, QPSK, with a peak amplitude value of 5 iii, 8-QAM with two different peak amplitude values, 2 and 4, and four different phases ‘An analog signal has a bit rate of 8000 bps and a baud rate of 1000 baud. How many data elements are carried by each signal element? How many signal elements do we need? Given a channel with an intended capacity of 20 Mbps. The bandwidth of the channel is 3MHz. What signal-to-noise ratio is required in order to achieve this capacity? i, We send a voice signal from a microphone to’ a recorder. Is this baseband or broadband transmission? We modulate several voice signals and send them through the air. Is this baseband or broadband transmission? Do as directed. Compare and contrast optical fiber and coaxial cable. Distinguish between multilevel TDM, multiple slot TDM, and pulse-stuffed TDM. Also give appropriate example of each Discuss the role of global addressing and Virtual Circuit Identifier (VCI) in virtual circuit network. Discuss the concept of redundancy in error detection and correction. Exemplify omnidirectional waves and unidirectional waves. How does a single bit error differ from a burst error? Do as directed. Assume that a voice channel occupies a bandwidth of 4 kHz. We need to combine three voice channels into a link with a bandwidth of 12kHz, from Page? of 3 06] [06] [16] los] [06] [04] [04] (02] [18] [oa] [04] (04) {02} [02| [02] [16] {06} CE401 Data Communication 20 to 32 kHz. Design an appropriate configuration, using the Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM). Assume there are no guard bands, OR ‘The Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) uses two bands. The first [06] band of 824 to 849 MHz is used for sending, and 869 to 894 MHz is used for receiving. Each user has a bandwidth of 30 kHz in each direction. The 3 kHz voice is modulated using FM, creating 30 kHz of modulated signal. How many people can use their cellular phones simultaneously? Write benefits of spread spectrum technique. Compare and contrast [06] Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) with Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) with suitable example. Discuss main characteristics of any signal. How to convert any signal from [04] time domain representation to frequency domain representation and vice versa? Answer the following. [16] Differentiate between circuit switched networks and packet switched [05] networks. Four 1 kbps connections are multiplexed together. A unit is 1 bit. Find (a) [06] ‘the duration of 1 bit before multiplexing, (b) the transmission rate of the link, (c) the duration of a time slot, and (d) the duration of a frame. OR Four channels are multiplexed using TDM. If cach channel sends 100 [06] bytes/s and we multiplex 1 byte per channel, show the frame travelling on the link, the size of the frame, the duration of a frame, the frame rate, and the bit rate for the link. Given the dataword 1010011010 and divisor 10111. [04] i. Show the generation of the codeword at the sender site (using binary division). ii, Show the checking of the codeword at the receiver site (assume no error). Page 3 of 3
