Simplifying Expressions with Fractions!

Steps to simplify with fractions:

1. Draw arrows where you will distribute (like always)
2. The rules of distribution stay the same! Multiply all terms inside the parentheses by
whatever is knocking on the parentheses door. To do that...
3. Divide each term by the denominator in the fraction, then take that answer and multiply it
by the numerator.

a) ¾(4x+8)

2 3
b) (6F-9)- (10F-15)=3F+1
3 5

c) ⅓ (x+3)+⅔ (x-12)

1
d) (2y+6)+4

With your partner, solve your assigned problem. When time is up, each group will
come up to the board and explain the steps they took to get their answer. For
example, “We distributed the ____ to _____ and _____ which gave us ______. Then we
combined….etc.”

A. 5-3(x+2)-x

B. ¾ (16-4x)-1

C. x-2(2x-2)+3

D. ⅔ (3x-12)-6

E. 2x-3(x+2)
