Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students are able to work at their own pace, second language learners are able to go back and repeat all
activities as many times as needed, There is a listening button for the question to be read to the student.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The teacher will start by telling the students they are going to learn about Sequoyah today. The teacher
will ask the students if anyone knows who Sequoyah is, and if so, what do they know about him. Then as a
class read the book Sequoyah by James Rumford, to give students some knowledge on the book. Each
student will have a copy of the book. Tell students to pay attention, because there will be an activity after.
Once the class as read the book together, send students to their desk with their own copy of the book.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

After students have returned to their desk, give them the link the Quizlet activities. Make sure students do
each activity once, and if they have extra time, then they can go back and go through another one multiple
times. The idea is for the students to really get familiar with the history on Sequoyah and what he created,
because the will create a set of symbols on their own in the days ahead.

symbols mean certain things. Tell students that tomorrow they will create a few of their own symbols for
certain things.

How will the data be used?

This data and activity will be used for the students benefit in remembering the important aspects of
Sequoyah’s life. Students have the option to review this at home on their own time, later students will have a
small quiz over the important facts they leaned.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

The goal for this activity was for students to be able to read the book, and use the book to help them
answer the questions in the activities on Quizlet. Teaching students how to use their book to answer
questions, and Quizlet gives them an online study guide that is both useful for students and their parents
when preparing for a quiz or test.

Reflective Practice:
I feel like this is a good, beneficial activity for all students in a classroom. It allows students to learn to
reference prior knowledge and materials. It also allows students to use these activities multiple times for
more practice. I think it is one of the better activities for second language learners because it gives them the
option for the computer to read the questions aloud if they are struggling or need help.
