Mahesh Danannavar, managing director, Educampus Learning Private Limited started his entrepreneurship journey with Corporate Connect, a BPO services company catering to domestic clients. "We started with 10 employees and grew to 200 by 2008 with offices in Mumbai and the US. Then, recession hit the outsourcing industry and we also got affected severely. Later, we diversified into offshore staffing and software solutions," shares Danannavar about his first venture. "My second venture was in wealth management and the third venture, Educampus, is in the online learning space," shares Danannavar. The desire to be on his own was the motivating factor behind Danannavar's plunge into entrepreneurship. "I started my first venture when I was doing my graduation. When I saw opportunities after the dotcom bust in 2001, I took the risk and joined the entrepreneurship bandwagon. I believe that we must contribute something to the society, as well as create wealth for ourselves, and it’s entrepreneurship which gives

"My first venture was really successful and it was in the B2B space. I then thought of starting something in the consumer space and thus launched my second venture in the wealth management space. But it was a real disaster. We really didn't get great success with our second venture, as we initiated it during the recessionary phase and our timing was not right," says Danannavar. But he learnt quite a lot from his failures. "For me, if you fail in business, it's the business that has failed, not you as an entrepreneur. I completely believed in this ideology and worked very hard to cope with my failure, both emotionally and financially," shares Danannavar. "Now, with my third venture I am enjoying my journey as I enjoy interacting with my customers directly and feel good when we get positive reviews,” adds Danannavar. "I believe that every business/product has a life cycle; in this life cycle, the product will grow and tend to mature and once it matures and stabilises, the growth will be equal to nil. So, either we should kill that product or have an alternative business. Moreover, the service sectors like concierge services and healthcare inspired us to initiate something in that space. Thus, I started other ventures," explains Sharma. According to Sharma, managing multiple firms at a time is a challenge, as we are dealing with different people with different mindsets. However, he believes that managing multiple ventures is a good idea, as when one is going low, we have another one to support. Thus, multiple ventures help. "Multiple firms can be managed efficiently when we have the business focus, an ability to understand the need of the customer and the correct ability to get the right kind of support from the team members," adds Sharma. Even Sharma and his team had to face several obstacles before ensuing success for the three firms. He believes that challenges are a part of an entrepreneurial journey. "I have treated failures as ladders to success. With proper planning and presence of mind, I was able to overcome the challenges easily," explains Sharma. "Stability of mind, courage, vision, an ability to interpret economy and foresight, etc are the essential qualities that an entrepreneur must be equipped with. If you have it in you, you can run as many ventures as you want,” believes Sharma. As experts say, once you learn the ropes of entrepreneurship, it's less daunting to start the second venture, as one is aware of what needs to be done to become a successful entrepreneur.
